Stinky diapers.

My son wears the motherease cloth diapers, and has since he was a newborn. He is 9 mos. now, and I can't keep them from smelling strongly of urine as soon as they get wet. It isn't his urine, either, because when I use a prefold it doesn't smell that way. They don't stink when they come out of the wash, but the second he pees in them it smells like a dirty gerbil cage in his pants. Is there something I can do to eliminate the smell?

A friend of mine suggested soaking them in a vinegar/ water solution before washing them and that seems to have worked. I tried the oxy clean soak and that worked somewhat as well. Thanks for all your help ladies!

So, I don't know how you wash your diapers, but it sounds like you need to strip them. to do that I:

Use a water softener in with the detergent, and a few drops of tea tree oil-kills the bacteria os it kills the smell- then you run the WASH cycle until all the suds bubbles are gone from the washer, about 3 or 4 times, then let it run the rinse and spin.

The miracle that keeps my diapers from smelling though is the sun! hang out your diapers in the sun to dry and the sun bleaches out the stains and gets rid of the smell. Even if it is really cold. the sun will do the job, you might need to bring them in to finish drying.

I hope this helps!

It could be just the diaper some materials hold smells a lot more then others. I know disposables are like that, I find Huggies have a bad smell to them after a pee. I have the Chinese prefold diapers and I give them an extra rinse after each load.

You could also try soaking them overnight in OxyClean. 4 or 5 scoops of that stuff in a full load works wonders.

Have you tried washing them with Borax?
