Hi!
I am so excited to have found this group! I love cloth diapers! I am using cloth diapers and only know 1 person who does it as well. Sadly, she does them only at home like I do. I am trying to figure out how to use them while out. Does anyone have any systems or suggestions? This may sound silly but I don't want to be out with a big mess or be stressed over it. I can only think of taking ziploc bags to put dirty ones in until I get home. Maybe there are some pros out there who can help me :).
Thanks!
Tonya

I know a lot of people reccomend using wet bags and I plan on using one as well, but for now i just use a large make-up bag that is made out of vinyl, it holds in the wetness and seems to work pretty good. I use the disposable scented diaper bags (received them as a shower gift) for all the BM's. My little guy is exclusively breastfed so I all I deal with are the runny BM's, thats why I chose to seperate them from the others.

Cloth diapering while out is really no big deal.. you just have to do it once..the first time is the hardest. I had a hard time making the switch to night time cd'ing :-) I use plastic grocery bags to hold the dirties in until I get home. We live about two hours away from "town" or "the store" so when we go its an all day event. I usually change the baby at least 4 times.. Just bring your best diapers and go for it ! :-)

I second the Wahmies bags! I have 2 XL ones for my diaper pail in our nursery and then I have a small sock money one for the diaper bag. I need to get some more actually, I love 'em!

I use either plastic grocery bags to put my diapers in until I go home or a wetbag.

I don't know what the big deal is? everybody always says oh you'll want touse disposables while you're out to avoid the "hassle" but what is a hassle about taking off a diaper, putting it in a bag and throwing it in the diaper bag? think about it? I used plain old grocery bags until i really got going sewing diapers and had extra fabric around to make some wetbags but still i mostly forget them and you can always find a plastic bag. also, if its a pee diapers and you have a pul cover (or if it's a pul outer anyway) you just roll it up and it doesn't leak so i've thrown the diaper in the diaper bag without a bag before when i didn't have anything with me. no leaking, no weirdness. and don't forget that cloth diapers don't stink like disposables when baby just pees. and if you are breasfeeding, the poo doesn't smell either.

so just realize that changing "on the go" consists of taking off the diaper and putting it in a bag instead of the trash. not too different.....

and keep little cloth wipes in your diaper bag and a little spray bottle of water (you don't need fancy "solutions" although you certainly could use them if you like)

The best advice I can give you is to relax... I think lots of us cloth diapering mommies tend to get a bit too obsessed with it. With that said, I have a variety of mini wet bags... about 5x7 - 6x9... When I'm folding (stuffing) diapers, I put one diaper in one clean wetbag and then I know that that diaper goes into the diaper bag... when it's time to change diapers, you take the clean one out and put the dirty one in, along with any cloth wipes you may have used. I like to use the mini bags because then I don't have too big a mess when I get home, and I still have options if I don't get to it right away. For longer trips, I sometimes use my wonder bag (google "wonder bag" to find it online) which has a large section for clean and a large section for dirty diapers. Good luck!

i have the pampers wipe case and it is bigger than the huggies one and i have thinner wash cloths for the diaper bag so i can fit more in there and it holds probably 6 or 7 of them and i put baby oil and baby wash and water in the bathroom sink and get them wet and ring them out before i put them in the case so they are wet and ready to use just like disposable wipes when i need them...works great for me. we also have a thing of disp wipes in the car in case we happen to be out and about all day and run out of wipes....

Quoting Abbey:

We got a (dirty diaper) bag dispenser for a shower gift. I've seen them at Target. I LOVE IT!! It's so portable, and all I have to do is pull a bag out, throw the diaper in it, and tie a knot in the top. They even come scented!!! If I use a (cloth) wipe for a change, I throw it in a/the bag too!! If I wasn't given that as a gift, I'm sure I would have purchased a wet bag, or made my own from the scrap/left over PUL I have lying around.

These are so awesome!  I used them when I first started but didn't feel like buying refills.

I have a wahmie (wahmies.com)bag that I keep in the diaper bag. The bag has a small patch for scented oil so it doesn't smell to bad.

Get some small wetbags. http://hyenacart.com/sarahsstitches/ This mama makes great bags at a great price.

I use disposable wipes while I am out because I am always concerned about running out of my cloth ones or not having a place to wet them. That is the only thing I do differently.

Quoting Tonya:

We tried it out with a ziploc bag (I reuse and wash them) while I looked into the wet bag. It was an event! He had his first blow out and it was horrible. A little ironic that I try them and it was the first time he had any type of incident with a cloth. We are talking all on the outside of the diaper, on his arms, back, and even his neck! He must have been pretty clogged up. Thanks for all your help and know I feel like I can definitely do it!!!!!!

Oh no! Those are the worst! There's not a lot a liner will do for you in those huge blowouts, unfortunately!

Btw, If you want a good recommendation for a wet bag, I love Planet Wise bags. They really contain wetness well. Best of luck, welcome to cloth!

For day trips, I just keep plastic bags in my diaper bag. I recycle grocery store bags and produce bags - they squish down better than wet bags IMO. I recently CD'd while at my in-laws and we just took the diaper pail with us and did laundry before we left.

It's a piece of cake to do cloth diapers while you are out! As everyone has said, having at least one wet bag is a must. I also use a biodegradable, flushable liner whenever we leave the house, so if my son poops, I can just lift out the liner, and flush it all away. So I never have to carry poop in my wet bag. Of course, my son is 14 months and exclusively on table food, so his poo is pretty much always solid. Using a liner might be a little trickier on a younger babe with runnier poops.

I carry a small wet bag to put wet diapers in. I usually have her in pockets unless she is wearing a cute skirtie or wool shorts. I carry wipes in a small wet bag that matches my other wet bag. I got them from a wahm on DS. I also have (I know) a gallon ziplock bag for poopie diapers but... I have been carrying the same one for over a yr and never have had to use it. I have been lucky!!!!!

We just took a 3 day trip out of state and I was stressing the diapers. I was not willing ot use disposables so I made it work! I kept my diaper pail in the car (it was not warm and my son is brest fed, so stink was not an issue) I kept my wet bag with me and when it was full I dumped it intot he pail. It worked beautifully! The wetbags work teh same as a ziplock except you can wash and reuse them rather than tossing them in the trash each time u need a new one!

We spend most days out because our son comes to work with me, so we deal with this a lot. Wet bags are a MUST - we have two, one for wet diapers and one for poopy. We don't usually rinse until we get home for poopy (if they're exclusively breastfed you don't need to), which is annoying but most convenient for us. I just keep the wet bags in the diaper bag and it's fine, even with poopy diapers. Sometimes its nice to shake a little baking soda in the bag before you go to help with smell. I put pre-moistened wipes (baby washcloth 12 pack from walmart) in a ziplock bag - I just use water. We got our wetbags cheap from a gal on ebay who offered free shipping too; but there's lots of good ones out there. At first we used plastic grocery bags (didn't like that much) and you could also use the vinyl zip pouches sheets and other stuff comes in. It's been pretty easy for me. Hope that helps!

I just use wet bags (I have a few) and make sure I have plenty of cloth wipes and my wipe solution I use for the rare occasion my son poop's when we're out. I have biodegradable green bags I can put the poo in if it is bad and then I can flush it wherever I am. If I don't feel like the hassle of flushing it, I just leave it in the diaper and put it in the wet bag and deal with it at home. It is no different to me than using disposables were when we used them. It's really not as bad as you think it would be! You can do it

We have small wetbags that we keep in our diaper bags. Just in case, I keep plastic grocery bags in my car. After a change, we just put the diaper in the wetbag and zip it up. I've never had any stink problems. When my son was exclusively breastfed, I just put the whole diaper in the bag. Now, if he's dirty, I'll dump the diaper if it's convenient/nearby; if not, I just put the whole thing in the bag. But he rarely poops in public:)
