I have tried multiple detergents and the only one that consistently works and doesn't burn my baby is tide powdered.---any suggestions--I live in dc metro area in marlyand and our water has lots of chemicals.

also, if I use the vinegar and baking soda to get rid of smells my baby gets a horrible burn...even after rinsing them extra times..

I have to do a cold rinse, hot wash with small amount of detergent, another hot wash without detergent and sometimes 2 or 3 more hot washes.....why is this happening?

I do not seem to see others having problems with cloth...I use little beetles organic cotton, bumgenius 2.0, bum genuis one size organic

also, I have to tumble dry them because there is not way to line dry outside here and the velcro is very bad after a few months...any suggestions?

why do I have so many problems with them...what am I doing wrong? I follow the directinos and advice given...could it be the water here...is anyone else living in a city?

7th generation baby liquid laundry detergent works best for us. Sorry about your baby getting these burns.

I always use free & clear detergent (Purex, the cheap brand!), I have never used baking soda and vinegar or anything special. I just run them through a rinse cycle first, and then double rinse at the end, and I have no smells and no rashes. I always tumble dry but hang the covers to dry--you could just velcro them over a clothes hanger if you don't have anywhere else to hang them. That might prevent the damage to the velcro.

We have very hard water and a baby with a very sensitive bottom. I've found that 7th Generation plus some baking soda works best. When I'm stripping them, I'll add the vinegar and some tea tree oil in the initial rinse.

Sierra is right about the enzymes. I have a list of enzyme free detergents here http://www.niftynappybyvilate.weebly.com

I would use tea tree oil just 3-5 drops in a batch of diapers. It is an anti-bacterial so it kills the bacteria and helps with the smell.

there are HE detergents too if that is what you have I can get you in touch with some ladies that make and sell homemade soap for HE washers that works great! I have tried them! Let me know k?

enzymes are responsible for a lot of irritation so make sure the detergent doesn't have them but if tide work then why switch? lots of people use tide for diapers.

you could try lime juice instead of vinegar (that's what i use).

are you drying on low heat? i do that on rainy days or hang them on chairs.

doesn't seem like you're doing anything "wrong" but i never noticed smells without the use of baking soda and vinegar so could you cut that part out of your routine?

also i would say that i use detergent sparingly with no problems. my son is 8 months old and i have gone through one and a half bottles of arm and hammer essentials detergent since he was born. just a tablespoon or so of detergent is all i use. i have never had smell problems and the diapers always get clean. Breastfed poo is really water soluable so you don't need detergent really.

OH! do you have a front loader??? that could be the problem right there! my mother in law has one and i always have to strip my diapers after visiting her. they never get clean and the detergent stays in them. i do 2 to 3 washes per load of diapers there. boy i hate that thing.
