What cloth diaper really works at night time? We are experiencing leaks!!

We are currently using Bum Genius 3.0 cloth diapers. We are very happy with the product but are however experiencing leaks at night. Our 4 1/2 month old son is sleeping well through the night (approx 9-10 hour stretches). Well, that is, until his diaper leaks onto his left side!

I've even stuffed the pocket with one regular insert and two newborn pads to help. But this morning he still had a small leak...and all of the inserts were wet. So I feel assured that they are absorbing what they can. This leads us to my question: Is there a better brand or approach for night time diapering?

Thanks for your feedback!

Please Note: I'm aware that using too much soap can cause these diapers to lose their absorbancy. Needless to say, I am careful to avoid that. :)

You may need to strip your diapers. As for overnight, I like BumGenius One Size; Blueberry Basix AIO; Thirties duo fitted...but our son wakes up at night just to be changed. We started changing his diaper at night feedings when he was a newborn to hopefully make potty training easier when it is time (he is 7 months now). You could also use a diaper cover (blueberry or thirsties duo) to make a pocket using a 'cloth-eez' or 'oso cosi' as a base with a microfiber insert. Just my 10 cents.

we use posie's at night but because we use powder that being said...I recently triend a bamboo insert in my bg's instead..and after 5 hrs she was still virtually dry I am sure she could have went the day in that one diaper...you can get the flat bamboo to fold into 3 and insert at most stores for about 7$

I have a few pocket dipes that seem to wick moisture through the stitching (or maybe it's the insert i put in them that causes that?) but anyway, at night, we use a fleece soaker on top of the pocket diaper to prevent any leaks. I found that I overstuffed some of them, causing a gap in the leg/crotch area, and the pee wouldn't even get a chance to get absorbed. The fleece soaker totally helps that, and they are so cheap if you can sew! I used Katrina's pattern, which is free and you can google it, but just be sure to size up so you have enough room to cover the bubble butt!

The ones I make I personally go to the store and pick them out.  I pull them up on my arm and rub them on my face.  I think the people in the store all think I am a silly shopper.  LOL!  I only pick ones i would like to wear.  The new lambs wool and merio wool are very soft.  If it is a little thick or a tiny bit scratchy I soak them in vinear and water before I start to work with them.  That softens them up and then adding the lanolin softens them up even more.  really, My baby chooses her longies and sokers over jeans.  She only has 2 pants that aren't wool.  She loves them.

Really go to a thrift store and look for wool sweaters and give them a feel.  You WILL find some that are itchy, but if you are picky you will find some that are very soft.  if you don't find a tag on the neck look on the inside side seam.  I love to go thrifting for wool.  I get anyone who goes with me into it.  my hubby found a few awesome ones the other day when we went.  :)

Cashmere is a wool you know and the soft Angora is wool too.  I wouldn't suggest either for a soaker though. they get to dirty and don't hold thier shape very well.  But there are wools out there that are super soft, and silky feeling!

Any other ?'s  Did I mention I LOVE wool and could go on and on and on and on about it!  :)

I have to be honest, Vilate. When I think of wool, I think "itchy" and "scratchy." Can you describe the texture?

So iIsuggest hemp liners.  I had leaking problems and just delt with them for a year (my PUL diapers were getting old going on 4 years) then I found the most awesome thing ever and have not had one leak in the year i have been using it .....are you ready....WOOL!!!!  get a wool cover.  make it, buy it what ever you need to do to get one!  They are amazing.  I can't rave about wool enough.if you sew they aren't that expensive and if you don't mine aren't to high priced I think.  I also do crocheted ones, but they are a bit more.( i don't think i have any listed right now, but i just finished one that is adorable.)   you can see them here

I have a bunch more sweaters I need to sit and sew that is first on my list on Monday.  If you don't see a size you need just let me know.  or if you sew I will tell you where to find patterns and all the ins and outs.  Just ask away.  you can ask here or convo me on etsy.

i hope you will try it out.  no more leaks!  If you buy one from me I will GUARANTEE it.  just let me know you need a night one!

My son is seven months old and sleeps through the night as well.  I use a simple large sized prefold and doubler  with a waterproof cover and come morning everything is very wet but it stays in the cover.
Good Luck.

I use the stay-dry hemp doublers from Green Mountain Diapers (an online site) in Kissaluv fitted diapers and they do the trick for my little dude. And he is a very heavy pee-er. The doublers really do keep the moisture away from him and are very absorbent. As a side note, the stay dry thinner liners work great in the daytime.

I use babycottonbottoms.com for all of my cloth diaper supplies. The WAHM that runs it is great about giving out helpful info. She also offers standard $5 shipping rates, which is great when you're ordering detergent that weighs a ton. I use Allen's. She also has some great hemp liners and prefolds by a company called "Play All Day".

I also have to say using a hemp insert works wonders =) We use Happy Heinys Pockets and love them at night we stuff them with a hemp liner and the regular pocket insert and NEVER a leak and my son sleeps 11-12 hrs at night. Good Luck =)

Great advice everyone!

I am currently switching detergents to help solve the leakage problem. I discovered that Seventh Generation contains enzymes, which may cause build up or decrease absorbency. UGGH!

I think I may invest in some hemp liners as well. Having to stuff the diapers with 3 inserts is a pain--not to mention a whole lot of "junk in the trunk" for baby. LOL

Thanks to all!

I second the Hemp recommendation. I am using the Thirsties AIO diapers with a newborn size hemp prefold in the pocket. I don't have any leaks either. My problem is she has no butt and my husband didn't put the diaper on tight enough last night so the diaper was sliding down her legs when I got her up this morning. Even with that though, her sleep sack still wasn't wet.

That's too cute.  My sweet girl is lacking in the heiny, too!

I have been using HH's and have had few issues with leaks. I did buy a few Thirties AIO pocket and I stuff, at night, with one Little Beetle Hemp insert, not a leak yet! Try a hemp insert, they asorb twice as much as cotton. Also, you may be over-stuffing and creating gaps.

Trial and error.

I make cloth diapers and use them on my little girl.

I have had no problems with leaks.

I put gerber vynal pants over top and that may be the reason why.

The gerber pants are inexpensive and are available at walmart for about five dollars canadian for three pairs.

I found that with the bg that if I dont pull the inserts all the way to the edges in the front of the diaper it leaks. It kinda makes a pocket where the front sizing snaps are and make sure it is pulled over that fold.My little guy is 2 mos but is a very heavy wetter. I also really like the happy heiney pockets and the BG bamboo fitteds with a thirsties at night. He sleeps anywhere from 6-9 hours and they all have done fine.
