What is that smell?

Been using CDs for 20 months now on my almost 2 yr old and out of nowhere they have developed a smell. They smell fine out of the laundry and then as soon as he pees in them they reek like sewage. It's really bad. I'm not supposed to use bleach on them. Any thoughts?

Watch out using vinegar...I've found it can make the smell better (I only do it on occasion to remove the hard water buildup on the diapers so they aren't as stiff when I line-dry them). Doing a few extra washes without soap in HOT water usually does the trick.

It is likely that your child's pee just smells worse now because of not drinking enough liquid now that it is getting warmer, changes in diet, or other physiological changes (like a growth spurt).

Just get the right RG formula for your water - they have some for hard water, soft, and middle-of-the-road. Seriously, it's excellent stuff!

I second the recommendation of Rockin' Green. I have soaked my dipes in RnG and then washed them, and they were MUCH better after the soak.

Try Rockin' Green detergent. It's amazing stuff and absolutely safe on CDs when using their instructions. :)
And rinse, rinse, rinse, and sun, sun, sun.

I occasionally run my diapers though a load with Dawn dish soap. I found a lot of recommendations for it last year when I had the same problem. It has worked well for me. I think it also helps to dry them outside in the sunlight whenever possible - sunlight is a great way to bleach naturally.

You could also try running your diapers through the wash again with no detergent. I just did it this week and it took five run throughs before tons of suds were coming out. Two of the diapering sites I frequent recommend vs. stripping.

A note on using Vinegar- dont use it too often on PUL as it can break it down and cause leaks.

you LO must have gotten the big kid pees that's why it was out of no where. I dunno what changes, but it makes the diapers start stinkin big time. I also recommend vinegar in the rinse cycle with an extra rinse afterwards
