What's your diapering system and experience?

System: After several months, our baby wears pockets when we're out and about (or when Dad does the diaper changing), prefolds/covers at home (when Mom does the diaper changing), and disposables on vacations/trips.
Experience (so far): As far as blow-outs are concerned, disposables are worthless against what my little boy puts out - any suggestions? The prefolds/covers seem to hold things in the best, but my husband totally prefers the pockets, which work pretty well most of the time.

We use BG or FB at home, 'sposies at daycare (2 days/week) or out of town. Blowouts happen with anykind of diaper from time to time, but if they are happening a lot, you need to find a different brand of diaper.

I used prefolds occasionally(usually just at home) and I have a decent stash(15) of bum genius all in ones. I work, so we use the all in ones when he's staying with his grammy, and when we're out and about. On vacations, we use disposables, unless it's somewhere where there's a washing maching readily available.

System: TotBots nappies with Motherease wraps

Borrowed the first size - 'cos they are not in them for long and can't do much damage!

Started off with cotton Totbots in the larger size, but have now discovered Bamboozles TotBots. Bamboo stays so soft and is super absorbent, wish I had known this before buying the cotton ones. Take longer to dry on the line or radiator, but worth it.

We use disposables when out all day, but do take washables on holiday. There is nothing like a cloth nappy and a good wrap to contain bigger wees and poos! Even with washing factored they have been shown to be cheaper in goverment study. I will save even with the false start on second size...

System: I've tried it all on my other 2 kiddos - AIO, pockets, fitteds, everything.

With this baby we are all pf and mostly wool, although I do use thirsties PUL covers, too. It really does work the best for us.

We use prefolds and covers with velcro tabs and are very happy with them. Alexis, yes, it's much cheaper than disposables. I've seen estimates of savings from $1500 to $3000, depending on what you buy. Of course there is the cost of laundry detergent and the electricity to run your washer and dryer but still, you save a huge amount. And it's just so much nicer to put cotton on your baby's skin!

I haven't tried cloth diapers. Is it really more affordable? Do you use a diaper service?

I used MotherEase cloth diapers and I highly recommend them. We used disposables at night and while we are traveling. I prefer cloth over disposables though...once you're used to them they are just as easy!

Susan, I also tried fuzzibunz and did not like them. I am very happy with BumGenius and Mommy's Touch, although I prefer BG.

Susan, try doubling up with an extra insert or a chinese prefold, you will go longer between changes.

System: We started with pockets, and while we have some prefolds and covers, we do pockets about 95% of the time. Disposables give DD diaper rash, so we do cloth on vacation. It's really not that difficult, I just make sure the hotel we're staying at has guest laundry facilites and do a load of diapers while we are there. Thank goodness the airline didn't lose that bag though!

Experience: Yep, cloth diapers contain the mess a lot better than disposables. DD had tons of blowouts in disposables, but the cloth contained it much better. I love pockets. I stuff them after they get dry so it's just grab and go when DD needs a new diaper.

As far as blow-outs go, I am with you about the power of the prefold with a cover. My little guy's legs were so skinny that the pocket diapers, even on the tightest snap on the smallest size, were not snug enough to contain the poop. Now that he has filled out, he is better able to fit the pocket diaper. Both seem to work well. We have traveled quite a bit and really ended up using disposable diapers once and it was clear that we had been spoiled by the cloth diapers. As for your husband's predilection for the pocket diapers, I say whatever he likes that will help him participate in the baby care, go for it!
