I really love the pocket style diaper.
I had to find an alternative to disposables when my DD was only a few weeks old due to constant rash (we were changing diapers at least every hour! and still had issues). Anyways, I did a ton of research and tried the Bum Genius. They have been great for us.
Pocket Pros-
- Dry quickly (because you take out the absorbent part)
- Adjust absorbency
- Many are one size- so you save more money in the long run
- Can prepare them for care givers (just stuff them when you wash them)
Pocket Con's
- You have to stuff them (you shove an insert into the pocket, not hard)
- You have to un-stuff them (I shake out dirty inserts into the wet bag)
- Can be expensive (pre--folds are much cheaper, but lack the pros of pocket, prefitted, or all in ones (AKA AIO)) (also are expensive if you buy each size and not one size)

I switched my son at that age. I fell in love with mine immediately. It was pricey at first for me because I did not have a way to purchase second hand. I had done a lot of research before hand because I had wanted to start at birth. But moving overseas just weeks after he was born made me wait a little longer and then just got complacent. I used cottonbabies.com for a lot of my resourses but I see so many other great resourses posted here. I am pregnant with number two and will continue to clothe diaper. Although I sold most of mine months ago as I was not planning to have another. So now I will be researching diaper services for the begginning and building an inventory of used ones. I highly recommend one size diapers but would shy away from velcro as it does not hold up well. I had to replace mine before they were a year old. Thankfully cottonbabies had a 1 year warrenty so I had them replaced for free!! But I still will not give up on clothe diapering as it was simple and worked out well for my husband and I.

If you live in the Bay Area you should check out Earth-baby compostable diaper service. You don't have to deal with cloth diapers and the service rocks! They use compostable diapers that work just like huggies or pampers or any other disposable diapers. EarthBaby picks them up and has them professionally composted. We use them and they are GREAT!

just look on craigslist for second hand diapers and try out a few different styles before you buy a whole buch of one kind also be sure to have about 2 dozen prefolds on hand just in case with diaper covers like a g diaper cover or prolap or my favorite a wool diaper cover

Hi Laura,

I will convince you! First off, you might think its hard, its a lot of work, but really its not. I wish I would have found out about gdiapers before I got my thirsties, but there are a bunch of places online you can get diapers depending on what kind you want. If you by gdiapers from www.gDiapers.com, they do have disposable inserts. These are nice if you will be out and about. You save the diaper cover, but can put in a new insert anywhere. This makes the switch to cloth easier. The good thing about these inserts is they are environmentally friendly! They are biodegradable. They also make the cloth inserts for them for when you are at home. Another good thing about switching is they come in such fun colors!!
Cleaning cloth diapers really is easy. For me, I get those rubber golves, and keep a pocket of water and antibacterial soap in it, and pre-rinse my diapers after each use in the bucket. If they are pre-rinsed, they are less likely to stain and can be washed with your other clothes. However, some diapers require special detergents. But all in all, it is way cheaper. Sure you may pay a lot for cloth diapers initially, but cloth diapers should save your pocket book money after a couple months. It also makes it easier to potty train!
If interested, go to www.gdiaper.com
Other good brands are BumGenuis or Thirsties. I like Thirsties.

You can also buy a one size fits all diaper that snaps at different sizes and will last thru out babyhood!

I order mine from a local mom who has a home base office. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links but if you type angelbunz.com and click on the FAQ link that's where I started. She covers so many questions regarding cloth diapering and she also has cloth diaper workshops available if you're in the Los Angeles area. She's great! I can email her anytime regarding my order or ask diapering questions and she replies right away. There are also other websites I've visited that sell diapers (nicki's diapers, diaper junction, cottonbabies, green diaper (same owner and website of angelbunz).

There are tons of different diapers out there but if you're used to the convenience of disposables I would suggest AIO's (all in ones), meaning you don't need a separate cover for the cloth. They can either snap on or velcro on and many of them are one size so they grow with your child. Youtube also has great videos comparing the popular brands like fuzzibuns, bumgenius, kissaluvs, etc. There are parents on youtube that also show you how to use the different types. It takes some research, but once you have your stash that you're comfortable with - it's a breeze to use! Not to mention economical and highly earth friendly.

one word of caution another mom told me: Don't use diaper creams that are not safe for cloth because they'll get ruined! I use Grandma El's or the Magic Stick. I prefer the magic stick because it's like a big chapstick that you twist, that way you don't have to get your fingers all icky with cream and I love the way it smells. Best wishes!
