Did any of you make your own prenatal formula? At the beginning of my pregnancy the iron in prenatals was too strong for me. I also was not satisfied with the amount of calcium, zinc, magnesium, and folic acid. I took 2 mg of folic acid daily and 1000 mg of magnesium and 2000 mg of calcium daily. My doctor recommend those amounts of calcium and magnesium. I was able to adjust the amount of iron, depending as to how far along my pregnancy was. In the first trimester I took 30 mg of iron, during the second trimester I took 60 mg, and in the third trimester I took nearly 90 mg of iron.

Ahh, I had an image of going to the supermarket and buying a bottle of each one, which would run about 20 bucks each bottle, whereas my pre-natal vitamins are around 15 dollars canadian for 200 of em. If you had found a cheaper way then I dont see anything wrong with personalizing it!

I got my vitamins through the mail; they were actually cheaper than prenatal vitamins.

I wouldnt even be able to AFFORD that many pills. The prenatals were better than not taking anything, and as long as your diet is fine, you shouldnt have a problem keeping yourself healthy. My bloodwork comes back fine every single time with just taking pre-natals, except that now that im in my last trimester, my iron has gone down a bit (but ive also forgotten to take my pill quite a bit, blame the baby brain) so I am on one second iron supplement.
Just make sure your diet is healthy and balanced, and in most cases, even THAT is good enough for your body to sustain life properly.

For the first trimester I tried taking Blackmores Pregnancy vitamins, but the tablets are so large I could not swallow them and I would choke. After that I stopped taking the vitamins and just started eating more fruits and vegetables.

WOW well there is no way I would be able to take that many pills in a day. I don't like taking pills at all. Although since I'm pregnant, It's about my baby's health not about what I don't feel like doing...so I think I would be willing to take about 5 or 6 pills.

So I just went and tried to look up prenatal vitamin content in various popular brands. I am not getting anywhere. I can't find anything on comparing content of prenatal vitamin brands. I CAN find alot of places to compare the prices! But none of them are comparing whats in them!!! I found ONE page that was like a little chart of about 10 brands and it compared the content of each one. But of course they are not the brands that I was trying to compare....
So does anyone know where the heck I can look at the labels of various vitamin brands??

I'm not sure how many bottles of pills I had, but I took approx. 16 pills per day. I had to take 5 folic acid pills daily just to get what I needed.

That's what I thought you meant buy making your own formula, just making sure. I want to do that! I have been comparing all prenatal vitamins and it non of them have been perfectly balanced! WHY lol. Either they have too much amounts or they don't have enough. Or the ones that have perfect amounts don't include all the vitamins and minerals you need. The only reason I am taking the prenexa is because it has a gentle stool softener in it. Which I needed because of hemorrhoids(I'm pregnant right now BTW). But as soon as I get that cleared and I get back into a good diet and good fluid intake, I will be switching my vitamin supplements. I just found out Prenexa does not have that many vitamins in it. It does have DHA which is good, but you would be missing out on alot of other vitamins, and the vitamins it does have don't have enough of it.
So yeah...I'm probably gunna take my own individual supplements. What I'll probably do is find a prenatal that is pretty well balanced and then add other supplements that my prenatal vitamins lack. Is this what you did? or how many different supplements did you take?

I thought the prenatal vitamins were inadequate. They did not have enough zinc, calcium, or magnesium. My doctor told me to take ten times as much calcium and magnesium as prenatals contain. I wanted to take more folic acid than prenatals had, since I had a sister who died from spinal bidida. Also, in the first trimester the amount of iron in regular prenatals would have given me diarrhea because too much iron gives me diarrhea.

What I mean by my own formula is that I never took a pill labeled as prenatal vitamins. I took separate calcium, magnesium, zinc, kelp, iron, B complex, vitamin A, E, & C, and folic acid supplements. I wrote down everything I was taking and showed it to my doctor and he approved of it. I took 2 mg of folic acid daily, which is more than most prenatal vitamins contain.

my doctors didn't mention drinking milk... how do women drink the recommended amount of water (2L) and all that milk?!!!

[deleted account]

wow I did not know you were supposed to drink that much milk a day! Thats way to much for me lol. I am lucky to get down a class of milk sometime during the day and another at dinner. I usually just have a glass for dinner. I'm addicted to water so I would much rather pour a glass of water then a glass of milk.
I take prenexa prenatals. Not sure how they add up to the recommended daily values I should have but they have a gentle stool softener in it, which I needed, so that's why I take those.
What do you mean by make your own prenatal formula?

You actually are supposed to drink a quart of milk a day. Once my doctor got after me because I was only drinking three cups of milk per day.
