I'm thinking about switching to cloth diapers for my son but I wonder if I'm crazy to try it after he's been in disposables for 9.5 mos? Has anyone else switched after using disposables for a while? And does anyone have recommendations on what kind of cloth ones to use?

This really depends on if this is your first child or your last. If it's not your last, then you can always use all the diapers again for each child after. But if it is your last then cost will be a factor and you won't get as much use out of them, but it will still be healthier for your son. I started cloth diapering when my (now 7 year old) was already potty training. I cloth diapered the next child and he grew into the potty training ones I had for the older one. And I also used cloth on the following baby. For a total of 3 kids.

A friend of mine switched her son over to cloth at 8-9 months. So it's never too late and you will save money in the long run! I recomend getting pocket diapers. BumGenius 3.0 are really popular and so are Fuzzi Bunz. My absolute favorite pocket is Rumparooz. I LOVE them!! They are a bit more pricey then BGs and FB, but they are worth it!:O)

My favorites are pockets, and we switched at 2 - 3 months I think. I know lots of people who switched later though. I think the babies like them better, they're certainly cheaper, and they help potty training. My 17-mo. old now is constantly pointing at her diaper when she wants to be changed, and we will be potty training in a couple months (not now because I'm expecting a baby in a few weeks and don't want to deal with regression). But, totally worth it. I sewed my own, btw.

Hi Renee...we just started using cloth about a week ago & so far we're liking it. We decided to try cloth b/c of $ but we weren't sure we'd like them, so we only got 6 to start. We got the Bum Genius All in Ones, as I wanted it to be as hassle free for myself as possible. He'll be 5 mos next Thursday. So for right now, we're using the cloth every day until I run out, then we switch to disposables. Also still using disposables at night. But so far, so good. We got ours from softclothbunz.com

It totally depends on how much you want to spend. Prefolds with simple covers is by far the cheapest and then you could even use some wool covers in the mix. Pocket diapers and All In One diapers are much more pricy. This link is to a chart of all the cloth diaper lingo and then there are oodles of websites you can get diapers from or maybe even a local store near you. I wouldn't buy a ton of one diaper to begin with until you know what fits your little one best. Any change you can make is great if you want to do it. Are you going to have any more kids? if so that is where you'll really save money. Plus think that your son will probably be in diapers until he's 2-3 years old. I've always heard kids that wear cloth diapers are potty trained earlier too! Sorry to ramble, but I don't think it's crazy to switch at any point!

Oh yes -- I'm just starting to sell my design (I ultimately designed and sewed my whole stash of pockets). www.rctdiapers.webs.com.

I switched around 3 months, but I've heard of people switching as late as 18 mo. I don't think it's ever too late to switch. I prefer pocket diapers, they are the easiest to use and wash and they work just like disposables. Get ones with snaps on them because otherwise he'll soon learn to take them off by himself (Velcro is easy to undo).

I have used cloth on 3 of my children, my now 6 year old was 1 1/2 when I switched after figuring out what was causing the on going rashes. With her I just did simple fitteds with covers. My last 2 have been in cloth since birth. I prefered fitteds or prefolds wiht wool covers for baby #3 but am really enjoying pockets for my youngest. I like GADs (Green Acre Designs for him). I belong to a wonderful group of mamas over on Hyena Cart, tons of info there.

We made the switch when my son was 3 months old. I am so glad we did, the benefits are too numerous to list. As Anne mentioned, it can become an addiction/obsession. We use prefolds and Haute Pockets. Any future children will use cloth from day one.

I switched my first daughter to cloth when she was around 9 or 10 months old and it went great for us. With her I used prefolds and fitteds and some Kushies AIOs. I CD'd my second daughter from the start and we have almost exclusively used BumGenius one-size with her. I also use some prefolds and fitteds with covers.

I have always wanted to try wool but haven't made the investment yet.

I give you a thumbs for entertaining cloth diapers. I put my little one in cloth at 6 months, he is now almost 16 months. I use prefolds with wool covers for home, and fuzzi bunz or bum genius when we go out since they usually will keep baby dry for a couple of hours. I love cloth diapering and knowing that softness is touching babies skin versus paper, ya know. Green mountain diapers is great for prefolds, you could try jillians drawers for some good prices on pockets , they also have a used section for pretty cheap. Also one mama above mentioned diaper swappers.com, great idea. They have some great forums and you can buy used cloth diapers on there. I am addicted to going on there and buy stuff all the time. If you need anything anymore info, please feel free to contact me. Good luck!

I use Bum genius as they are a one size and we started using them when my daughter was very small, but I really didn't like the all in one kind, they take DOUBLE the ammount of time to dry and i wonder what effect that has on our energy consumption. I would put them out on the line, but its winter and they wouldnt dry.
If you do switch ( and i dont think any time is too late) The bum genius with the liners you can take out.

you might also want to look into G diapers. They are a reusable cover and the liner is compostable or flushable. It is kind of an inbetween, but with the same waste as if you were using toilet paper.

we started expermenting in cloth when my first was 4 months but we didn't switch to full time cloth till he was about 9 months it was totally worth it since we was in diapers till 2.5 years and we have been full time cloth with baby #2 since birth, i don't have a personl favorate i started with a little bit of everything and sold what i didn't like we use mostly pocket diapers and prefold with covers but i do have some aio's and fitteds that i love as well, most of our cloth diapers have been bought used on diaperswappers.com as a way to save money, for the 2 kids i think we've spent about $450 on diapers all together that a huge difference from if they each had 2.5 years in sposies

I switched my son when he was about 2 months, so he was pretty little (he's 3 1/2 years old now). I am so glad that we did. He never (ok, maybe once) had a rash in cloth. When he was about 1 1/2 we used a combo of cloth and disposables as the childcare had never had a cloth diapered kiddo before, and thought that they leaked more than disposables. They have consented to cloth with the new baby (due any day now). For our new little one, I have prefolds and covers for home, and then Bumgenius AIOs for when she goes to childcare (although honestly I will probably use both at home). With my son, we used primarily pockets (Swaddlebees and Fuzzybunz old styles now). I liked the pockets, but with the new styles, and 2 kids, am thinking that once I am back to work  I would rather give my AIOs an extra spin in the dryer rather than spend the time stuffing pockets. Just a personal preference.

Whichever way you look at it, you will save $$ (it seems that disposables just keep getting more expensive), it is less chemicals against baby's skin, better for the environment. Some say that cloth diapered kids potty train faster, too.

As far as buying, cotton babies seems to frequently have seconds on some of the BumGenius - I just bought a bunch of the small AIOs and I would have never guessed that they were seconds.

On the cons side, it really can become an obsession, so be careful!!

We switched to cloth diapers when my daughter was 4 months old. She had horrible, bleeding rashes from disposables, and switching was our only choice at the time. I am so glad I did it - I love it and will never use a disposable diaper again!

Which diapers you want is really a matter of personal preference. I have a lot of bumGenius pockets, a few of their all-in-ones cloth diapers, a couple dozen prefolds, and a handful of fitteds and covers. I use different cloth diapers at different times or depending on my mood. There are several places online you can order trial packs, just to see what you like best. You can also look on craigslist and often find some used cloth diapers, to keep from spending a ton of money and then hating them.
