America Bashing

[deleted account] ( 115 moms have responded )

Ok I just want to say this and get it out there because it's something that's been bugging me. It sorta came up a little bit earlier on another thread. This America bashing crap has GOT to stop. I have had my moments where I have been "not so proud" of my fellow American citizens. So don't get me wrong, I'm not about to go all red, white and blue patriotic to the bone on you. But I AM proud to be an American. I understand that there are other countries in the world who have stereotypes attached to them. But as an intelligent human being, I also know that all Canadians don't live in igloos, all Australians don't have kangaroos for pets and all Brits don't have tea and crumpets every afternoon. I'm not stupid. I'm not any of those things you see on the news. I'd venture to say that the MAJORITY of Americans are NOTHING like what the rest of the world sees on the news. News sells. Sensationalist stories sell. From time to time, I'm sure there are threads bashing Canada or France or Germany or Japan (just using them as random examples). But NO OTHER COUNTRY is as bashed, ripped to shreds, made fun of, insulted and in general...disrespected as the United States is. And I for one am sick to death of it. It's the reason I have stayed away from political conversations lately and it's the reason why I will probably continue to stay away from them. Because no matter what, it ALMOST ALWAYS leads back to saying something negative about the country that I am proud to call home. And just to clarify, this is just me needing to get something off my back. If your country was as disrespected as constantly as mine is, you might have your nose out of joint too.

I understand both sides of this. I myself as an American get embarrassed about some of the idiots we have. Everytime I read one of those overzealot nationalistic posts about how America is better I cringe and get sick to my stomach and HOPE with every bone in my body that no one thinks thats is how all Americans are...a bunch of ignorant overly patriotic to the point of being nationalistic isolationist hateful bigots. Yes.. we have these morons stomping around the US but they are the few not the many. And we all in every nation have ignorant crazy morons running around making us look less that stellar and sometimes they are members of our own family...come on how many of us have that wacked out cousin.

Anyways at the same time I understand the offensive feeling and I know for me that has a lot to do with being just tired..emotionally tired of all this hate, confusion, and ignorance that is erupting across the world but it seems to be a particular political issue for us here in the US since the Bush administration was such a screw up (for the record I voted for Gore and Kerry and I am a Liberal Democrat).I just am tired of hearing about and seeing all the CRAZY shit as the foundation of Americanism. I dislike all the stupid people and don't care where the hell the come from or what their political views or social views are..STUPID IS JUST PLAIN STUPID.

I know exactly what Laura is referring to. I read the ignorant attacks on her and other Canadian women and I stood up for them in that forum but I NO longer take part in that community because those women sickened me because they do often represent the worse of America but just remember that the best of the American women are over here in Debating Mums and we do love our country just as everyone else and we can take a joke. Heck I will be one of the first to joke about Southern American stereotypes since I am a Southern girl but some things go beyond the tongue and cheek and they become hurtful.

I think we just want to say at least I do that we love our nation and we are not blind to our faults but we want everyone to know that we are not all CRAZY IGNORANT BIGOTS. Ok I maybe a bit crazy but I am far from ignorant. Perhaps we can send all of our embarrassing idiots to an island where they can all live together and we can call that country the land of Dumbdum.

Now can we all hold hands and sing. Peace, Love, and Unity!

OH and don't forget college football which is one of the things I love best about America. The SEC rocks! ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has gotten way out of control. You will not like what I have to say so if the rest of you are all going to be over sensitive stop reading.

If you actually READ the threads on PDM there are 3 Canadians on that group (possibly more but 3 of us that post almost everyday). We do not America bash, we defend ourselves and our positions. If people can not differentiate between the two than it obviously is not the place for you. More times than not we are defending our own country from the propaganda put forth that people take at face value. Most of the stuff about our politics, our medical/science breakthroughs, our education system, our day to day lives, very very few actually know what they are talking about. At least some have the decency to ask us and not start with.. America is the best, Canada piggy back's off America. There is a lot of hate, a lot of unnecessary hate, ON BOTH SIDES.

THOSE PEOPLE ARE THE UNINFORMED JACKASSES. They happen everywhere, in every country. For the most part Canadians DO NOT CARE what others say or think about us as a country because we have a sense of humor as a country.

THERE IS NO NEED TO TAKE EVERYTHING TO HEART. When it is then things like this thread happen. Something that was said was taken out of context, completely turned around on the OP and when that happened she got defensive. Well I would too. So do the majority of you when your words are skewed in a way that was not meant. I have rarely seen anyone apologize and say.. Sorry I did not mean to offend. (At least on the forums I am part of.) I am sure most people can ignore the snide remarks made to them, the out right attacks that happen after an innocent comment but not all people are like that.

I am sorry Joy and the others who agree with you but I do not agree. You can say what you like, you can choose to be offended, you can choose to keep going on the offensive, you can choose to not listen with an open mind and heart... it all comes down to choice. If you choose to not listen then that is your loss.

There are women on here from all countries around the world. I would hazard a guess that a few of them could tell you about real horrors that happen every day where they live. Wounded pride is quite far down on the list for me. I'm Canadian though.. I'll just laugh it all off. This does not mean I am laughing AT any of you but rather at how much this whole thing has gotten blown up.

Have a great evening. I will not post here again but someone needed to say what I know others are thinking.

No Diana but responses like yours do elicit very negative responses from people.

I get tired about of hearing that other countries are not informed. I did not even want to be dragged into this but that crap being said has got to stop.

I am GLAD I AM CANADIAN. I don't have to live there to know it. I have friends that live there. Good enough. I have Canadian friends that have moved there and moved back home. It's National pride and the constant jabs that we are not informed, are not as talented, are not as gifted, are not as educated, getting wearing on the nerves.

Maybe actually read things and find out why on CoM's the US is under constant attack and you'll understand.

I like Americans on an individual basis. But it is people like you and your comments that sour it for everyone. There are more than a few on CoM's and Joy's post is a vent to get away from ones like you. There is national pride and there is acting superior. Get over it. Stop making assumptions and maybe listen to a few others.

I'm done with this. No reason to get worked up over a stupid thread. Joy is my friend and while we do not agree from time to time if I say more I may offend her as well.

Have a great day. I will being away from this frivolous crap.

The sting is felt when there are discussions going on re. certain political issues and things are said along the lines off "thank god I don't have to live in that fucked up country of yours". That's not tongue in cheek anymore. That's not a joking stereotype. And I do not recall ever hearing that about any other country on DM.

I just wanna address this - I do agree with you Esther - completely that the bashing goes beyond the sarcastic tongue in cheek stereotype but I don't agree with that statement about never seeing that about other countries. Maybe not EXACTLY "thank god I don't have to live in that fucked up country of yours".But I have seen MANY comments from Americans saying that Canadians couldn't possibly know anything about American politics, that there's no possible way we could get what is going on, Amie mentioned it earlier.

There are  A LOT of Americans in those political debates that completely dismiss anything a Canadian says simply cause they're Canadian and I have seen them also say that Canadians are "too stupid to get it." "not informed enough to understand." "oblivious to the world outside of Canada." all sorts of shit that does sting because it's not just an attack on a WHOLE country like saying "I'm glad I don't live in a fucked up country like America" it's saying EVERY SINGLE CANADIAN IS STUPID. And in those same debates it's ONLY the Canadians that are saying anything even REMOTELY logical.

I do completely understand what you are saying that over and over and over it's annoying and it stings - but that certainly doesn't mean the jabs we get aren't annoying too OR any less signifigant just because it is the idiots in the US that are bringing themselves to the forefront. I hope that makes sense.

Well, I haven't read anyone elses response yet, but I'd venture to say it has something to do with how inundated other countries are with our business. Our politics, our music, our movies, our clothes....okay, maybe not our clothes.

Anyway, we've kinda got our nose out there waiting to get punched.

When I watch BBC world news, they cover the world news including America...when I watch BBC news, I can still see American coverage. I'd get sick of hearing about a country that doesn't affect my day to day living too.

I don't know what bashing you are talking about though....I haven't been online in a couple of evenings.

IF YOU FOREIGNERS ARE BASHING AMERICA.....I'M MOVING TO YOUR COUNTRY NEXT!!!!! ;0) I just won't be allowed to work...any chance of me getting welfare there?

If you can't stand the heat ... quit turning the stove up!

Perhaps I shouldn't have made that comment but I can assure you that I was talking about those "big mouths" who were trashing the U.S. on the other threads on the Welcome page and in the political groups.  It wasn't directed at anyone here, no one on DM or DMG or to anyone who had posted on this thread up til that point.

[deleted account]

This thread has been totally been taken out of the original context I intended and I will take full responsibility for that. It was a vent, pure and simple, and I stated that in the original post. We all need to vent from time to time and this was just me venting about something that was bugging me. It wasn't a pity party and I didn't expect any of you ladies who are not Americans to jump in on the "back patting". I also wasn't talking about stereotypes. Like I also said earlier, every country has stereotypes and most of the time, I find the ones about the United States (the south especially because I'm a southern girl) to be funny as hell. I was talking about some comments I had seen on several threads through out the welcome page and a few of the political groups that were down right nasty towards Americans. Being lumped in with the village idiots, even on CoM, gets really old after awhile and I reacted. If this was not made clear because of my wording, I do apologize. I didn't mean for this to get to the point it has. I was merely expressing a personal reaction to the shit talking I've read lately. And later, yes, I was trying to say some nice things about where I live.....more of a "let's get on a positive note" kind of thing.

On a personal note, to all of you who are my friends, I'd like to apologize to you all personally because none of my "venting" was meant towards any of you in any way. I didn't think I had to say that but again, my wording wasn't what it should have been. Again, I apologize, as honestly and sincerely as I can.

Wasting so much time and energy cause some people make fun of and bash the beyond stupid people that are making themselves known - not JUST in the news either, but everywhere.

If you're not one of those morons then you shouldn't even be bothered by it, annoyed maybe at hearing it all the time but I would hazard a guess that all your negative energy spent on being mad at the people who poke fun would be better spent teaching those stupid ass Americans how to NOT give America such a bad rep.

EVERY country has stereotypes, EVERY country gets made fun of. If you wanna pat yourselves on the back, GOOD! YOU SHOULD! But its absolutely 100% without a doubt insulting that ANY American should EXPECT anyone who is NOT American to jump in on the back patting.

I don't hate Americans. I make fun of STUPID PEOPLE. I don't give a rats ass if you're American, Canadian, British, German, Slovak, Chinese, Japanese, Hawaiian, white, black, red, yellow, I don't care if you're a purple people eater - if you act like a jackass, I'm gonna call you a jackass.

Canada gets made fun of left right and center, AND IT SHOULD BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you hear what people make fun of?????? THAT SHIT IS FUCKIN FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not gonna take it personally though.... cause I don't live in an igloo (as cool as that would be), I don't have a pet beaver (although, depending on the slang, technically, every female in the world has a beaver!!!), caribou, moose or bear (as cool as that would be), I don't have a dog sled (although my parents do own 2 huskies), and I am not an Eskimo (and I would bet that 99% of the people who use the word Eskimo have no idea how insulting they are being).

If you can't laugh at yourself......................................... snore.

[deleted account]

Seriously ....ONLY IN AMERICA would there be people who need validation from each other about HOW AMAZING their country is because a bunch of dumbasses open themselves up to being made fun of...

You didn't start a thread titled "Why America is great", you started a thread on "America Bashing".

...Both quotes from your posts, and that's what I was referring to. It was deemed unacceptable to feel bad about our country being made fun of or to talk about what we liked about it.

And now, I'm bowing out of this conversation. It's clear that no one is listening to anyone else anymore, and all we're doing is beating heads against a brick wall.

I have never, and will never, mean to insinuate that my country is better than any others. If any of my posts have come across as such, I do humbly apologize, because it is probably just a matter of word-choice since I didn't intend to do to others what I'm angry about being done to me. I love where I live, and I don't want to be stereotyped because of that. I doubt anyone else does either. And I don't think we can know what it's like to be something else, to live somewhere else, until we actually do. Those were the only points I was trying to get across-and again, if they came off as superior or as bashing another country then I truly apologize because I never meant to do so-I value opinion and thought from others.

Again, I'm bowing out of this conversation. Again though, I apologize if my posts seemed to stereotype others-they weren't meant to. I was and am merely defending my home and my viewpoint.

[deleted account]

Now you're insinuating that I haven't read things...

The fact that I have is the entire reason that I'm so fucking pissed about how much shit we get in the U.S.

It's fine to be glad you're Canadian. Or British. Or Ethiopian. Or Narnian. I'm glad I'm American. But I have never, will never say that I'm glad I'm *not* British, or Canandian, or Ethiopian, or Narnian-because that implies that I actually know what it's like to be any of those things, and I don't.

I'm not acting superior. I have never pretended to be better than anyone else here or in my actual day to day life. If you think that's what I said, then you either misread or my post insinuates something that it wasn't meant to, and I apologize. What I'm sick of is people like you who think that it's ok to tell me that my country is shit and yours is way better and get offended when I reply in anger. I have listened-and I'm tired of listening and saying nothing. This and one other thread are the only threads in many, many where I've actually replied to the asshats who sit around and talk about how much we Americans suck-and I'm just fucking sick of sitting back and letting people trash my home.

You didn't start a thread titled "Why America is great", you started a thread on "America Bashing".

So a few people can't see anything more past those dumbasses. Big deal. America is not the only country being bashed on a daily basis. The simple fact is there are a lot of political threads around mainly centered around your beloved country and all too often if an outsider offers an opinion, they are told how worthless their opinion is. You choose to see the retaliation to be a personal attack. If a person states that these people are the ones damaging America's global image, you take it as a personal attack.

There is a much bigger picture here, but you can't see past your own backyard.

If you want to throw yourself an everyone hates America pity party then go right ahead .... don't expect everyone to jump on the bandwagon.

You also just made it clear that you would've ribbed a thread that said "Why America is great" as well.

And after a while, that starts to get to us-we're damned if we do, and damned if we don't. If we complain about being bashed then we're throwing ourselves a pity party, and if we talk about what we love about our country then we're "dumbasses" who need to make ourselves feel better.

I don't take it as a personal attack when people refer to the idiots as the ones who are damaging our image-but I do take great offense when someone says "this is why the world hates you" or says "I'm glad I'm not American," because that lumps me and a lot of other intellegent and sane people into the category with those others. All we're asking for is respect.

Wow Cathy - I think that's a little strong. I'm not even American and I was starting to feel defensive about my adoptive country too. And as you've seen, there were a few more Americans who felt that way.

I have certainly expressed my share of frustrations & criticisms about certain US policy issues and about some of the people on the right that I vehemently disagree with and frankly find quite disgusting. I think 8 years of Bush really made matters much worse. I think in 2000 most Americans still got the benefit of the doubt because of how the election was decided, but in 2004 I think "we" lost that. I also think that much of the criticism is totally legitimate. Furthermore, I think the US (and I'm generalizing here too) brought some of the "bashing" on themselves with phrases like "Only in America" (as if someone in France couldn't succeed just as well) and some of the chest pounding that goes on from time to time. And of course the US still does hold a unique position in the world as a superpower which means that EVERYONE has an opinion (usually well-informed) on what goes on in this country. Nobody cares what happens in Holland, except the people who live there.

However, when you hear "I'm so glad I'm Canadian/Australian/British etc." or "Thank god I don't live in the US" one too many times, it does start to sting. That may not be rational, but it's real nonetheless. And again, if I can feel the stinging and I'm not even a US citizen, I can only imagine how it would sting to those who are. I don't ever hear that kind of thing expressed about Holland. If anything people would love to live there (or at least vacation) and get their government provided weed & prostitutes (haha - jk).

It's kind of like my situation with my inlaws. I cannot stand my mother and father-in-law. I won't get into the details of why, but trust me - they SUCK. And my husband agrees that they suck. BUT, they are still his parents. And I always have to be careful not to criticize them too much or too often. I even have to hold back on agreeing with him when HE slams them. He once told me "I know you're right, I just don't want to hear it anymore". It's that exact same sentiment.

Thanks Joy...I haven't been participating in this one, because I didn't know how to say what I feel exactly...but you seem to have done it for me. I LOVE my country, but I am certainly not blind to its faults, which is why I exercised my right to vote against GW twice, and went to protests against his unjust war...I know that Americans have gotten a lot of bad press around the world, and I can see why others might begin to think that we are all crazy loons (they are SO VERY noisy), but of course...in truth, they must know better. We are a nation that believes in redemption...we'd (the liberal/progressives here) like to think that we are on a path of redemption right now.

....I like videos too.

This is going to sound really cheesy but to watch that video and see the mighty All Blacks perform the Haka makes me damn proud to be a kiwi!

Everytime I hear the Haka, i get goosebumps. I live by the staduim in Christchurch and it is amazing when there is a game on, to hear national anthems and the Haka! I got it on video once too!

I especially love it when we kick Aussies arse! lol

One eye'd cantabrian here!

BIG MOUTH SPEAKING...listen up

as the original poster of "that's why the world hates america" I would like to say first that I posted that as an angry response to Canada bashing...A republican American stated that she was "peeing herself laughing" at the notion that the rest of the World COULD stop America from invading Canada if they wanted to.

I stated several times on that thread that I LOVE AMERICANS...I love your country...I actually spent two weeks in Maine this summer and I honestly believe that it might be one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I do, however, get a little sick of hearing that my opinion doesn't matter because I am not an american...especially on a post that asks for world views about America. "canadian woman" is fast becoming a dirty word on PDM.

If you can't take a little good humour about how the world views your country, don't ask (or don't read)

Laura this post had nothing to do with you.  In fact, I hadn't even SEEN a "that's why the world hates america" thread.  I posted this thread as a GENERAL statement about how much America bashing goes on on CoM.  I've been on CoM for about 6 months now and I noticed it on day one.  THAT'S  what this whole thing was about.

psht ! you're too smart for that Jenn ! You'd be like "oh.. if she catches me with these trees, I wil get a nap on the way there cause nature is my friend and then when I get there.... it's Jo... she'll offer me some beer, feed me some poutine, and gimme a nice big bear rug to curl up on while I read a book and relax in her igloo!!" hehehehehehehe

Seriously ....ONLY IN AMERICA would there be people who need validation from each other about HOW AMAZING their country is because a bunch of dumbasses open themselves up to being made fun of...

So it's wrong for me to be slightly offended because I often get lumped in with those dumbasses?  So it's wrong for me to want to say a few NICE things for a change?  That's not fair Cathy. :(
