Well, I haven't read anyone elses response yet, but I'd venture to say it has something to do with how inundated other countries are with our business. Our politics, our music, our movies, our clothes....okay, maybe not our clothes.

Anyway, we've kinda got our nose out there waiting to get punched.

When I watch BBC world news, they cover the world news including America...when I watch BBC news, I can still see American coverage. I'd get sick of hearing about a country that doesn't affect my day to day living too.

I don't know what bashing you are talking about though....I haven't been online in a couple of evenings.

This thread has been totally been taken out of the original context I intended and I will take full responsibility for that. It was a vent, pure and simple, and I stated that in the original post. We all need to vent from time to time and this was just me venting about something that was bugging me. It wasn't a pity party and I didn't expect any of you ladies who are not Americans to jump in on the "back patting". I also wasn't talking about stereotypes. Like I also said earlier, every country has stereotypes and most of the time, I find the ones about the United States (the south especially because I'm a southern girl) to be funny as hell. I was talking about some comments I had seen on several threads through out the welcome page and a few of the political groups that were down right nasty towards Americans. Being lumped in with the village idiots, even on CoM, gets really old after awhile and I reacted. If this was not made clear because of my wording, I do apologize. I didn't mean for this to get to the point it has. I was merely expressing a personal reaction to the shit talking I've read lately. And later, yes, I was trying to say some nice things about where I live.....more of a "let's get on a positive note" kind of thing.

On a personal note, to all of you who are my friends, I'd like to apologize to you all personally because none of my "venting" was meant towards any of you in any way. I didn't think I had to say that but again, my wording wasn't what it should have been. Again, I apologize, as honestly and sincerely as I can.

Wasting so much time and energy cause some people make fun of and bash the beyond stupid people that are making themselves known - not JUST in the news either, but everywhere.

If you're not one of those morons then you shouldn't even be bothered by it, annoyed maybe at hearing it all the time but I would hazard a guess that all your negative energy spent on being mad at the people who poke fun would be better spent teaching those stupid ass Americans how to NOT give America such a bad rep.

And now, I'm bowing out of this conversation. It's clear that no one is listening to anyone else anymore, and all we're doing is beating heads against a brick wall.

I have never, and will never, mean to insinuate that my country is better than any others. If any of my posts have come across as such, I do humbly apologize, because it is probably just a matter of word-choice since I didn't intend to do to others what I'm angry about being done to me. I love where I live, and I don't want to be stereotyped because of that. I doubt anyone else does either. And I don't think we can know what it's like to be something else, to live somewhere else, until we actually do. I get tired about of hearing that other countries are not informed. I did not even want to be dragged into this but that crap being said has got to stop.

I am GLAD I AM CANADIAN. I don't have to live there to know it. I have friends that live there. Good enough. I have Canadian friends that have moved there and moved back home. It's National pride and the constant jabs that we are not informed, are not as talented, are not as gifted, are not as educated, getting wearing on the nerves.

Maybe actually read things and find out why on CoM's the US is under constant attack and you'll understand.

I like Americans on an individual basis. But it is people like you and your comments that sour it for everyone. There are more than a few on CoM's and Joy's post is a vent to get away from ones like you. There is national pride and there is acting superior. Get over it. Stop making assumptions and maybe listen to a few others.

Wow Cathy - I think that's a little strong. I'm not even American and I was starting to feel defensive about my adoptive country too. And as you've seen, there were a few more Americans who felt that way.

I have certainly expressed my share of frustrations & criticisms about certain US policy issues and about some of the people on the right that I vehemently disagree with and frankly find quite disgusting. I think 8 years of Bush really made matters much worse. I think in 2000 most Americans still got the benefit of the doubt because of how the election was decided, but in 2004 I think "we" lost that. I also think that much of the criticism is totally legitimate. Furthermore, I think the US (and I'm generalizing here too) brought some of the "bashing" on themselves with phrases like "Only in America" (as if someone in France couldn't succeed just as well) and some of the chest pounding that goes on from time to time. And of course the US still does hold a unique position in the world as a superpower which means that EVERYONE has an opinion (usually well-informed) on what goes on in this country. Nobody cares what happens in Holland, except the people who live there.

However, when you hear "I'm so glad I'm Canadian/Australian/British etc." or "Thank god I don't live in the US" one too many times, it does start to sting. That may not be rational, but it's real nonetheless. And again, if I can feel the stinging and I'm not even a US citizen, I can only imagine how it would sting to those who are. I don't ever hear that kind of thing expressed about Holland. If anything people would love to live there (or at least vacation) and get their government provided weed & prostitutes (haha - jk).

It's kind of like my situation with my inlaws. I cannot stand my mother and father-in-law. I won't get into the details of why, but trust me - they SUCK. And my husband agrees that they suck. BUT, they are still his parents. And I always have to be careful not to criticize them too much or too often. I even have to hold back on agreeing with him when HE slams them. He once told me "I know you're right, I just don't want to hear it anymore". It's that exact same sentiment.

Thanks Joy...I haven't been participating in this one, because I didn't know how to say what I feel exactly...but you seem to have done it for me. I LOVE my country, but I am certainly not blind to its faults, which is why I exercised my right to vote against GW twice, and went to protests against his unjust war...I know that Americans have gotten a lot of bad press around the world, and I can see why others might begin to think that we are all crazy loons (they are SO VERY noisy), but of course...in truth, they must know better. We are a nation that believes in redemption...we'd (the liberal/progressives here) like to think that we are on a path of redemption right now.

I understand both sides of this. I myself as an American get embarrassed about some of the idiots we have. Everytime I read one of those overzealot nationalistic posts about how America is better I cringe and get sick to my stomach and HOPE with every bone in my body that no one thinks thats is how all Americans are...a bunch of ignorant overly patriotic to the point of being nationalistic isolationist hateful bigots. I dislike all the stupid people and don't care where the hell the come from or what their political views or social views are..STUPID IS JUST PLAIN STUPID.



I know exactly what Laura is referring to. I read the ignorant attacks on her and other Canadian women and I stood up for them in that forum but I NO longer take part in that community because those women sickened me because they do often represent the worse of America but just remember that the best of the American women are over here in Debating Mums and we do love our country just as everyone else and we can take a joke. Heck I will be one of the first to joke about Southern American stereotypes since I am a Southern girl but some things go beyond the tongue and cheek and they become hurtful.



I think we just want to say at least I do that we love our nation and we are not blind to our faults but we want everyone to know that we are not all CRAZY IGNORANT BIGOTS. Ok I maybe a bit crazy but I am far from ignorant. Perhaps we can send all of our embarrassing idiots to an island where they can all live together and we can call that country the land of Dumbdum.

This is going to sound really cheesy but to watch that video and see the mighty All Blacks perform the Haka makes me damn proud to be a kiwi!

Everytime I hear the Haka, i get goosebumps. I live by the staduim in Christchurch and it is amazing when there is a game on, to hear national anthems and the Haka! I got it on video once too!

I especially love it when we kick Aussies arse! lol

Laura this post had nothing to do with you.  In fact, I hadn't even SEEN a "that's why the world hates america" thread.  I posted this thread as a GENERAL statement about how much America bashing goes on on CoM.  I've been on CoM for about 6 months now and I noticed it on day one.  THAT'S  what this whole thing was about.
