Coming from Chicago, capital of the best pizza ever, I have some strong opinions on this one, but I'll wait and see if anyone else has some nominations...

@andrea we live in marion, a suburb of cedar rapids. i asked u the same question in the rodeo thread i think, lol!! where are you from?

here's a recipie for some dough jenny. i think it's the best homeade dough i've found.
1/4 cup light red or white wine, Fiano di Avellino
3/4 cup warm water
1 1/2 ounces fresh yeast
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon plus 1 tablespoon olive oil
3 1/2 cups flour
Directions
Place wine, water and yeast in a large bowl and stir until dissolved. Add the honey, salt and 1 tablespoon olive oil and mix well to combine. Add 1 cup of the flour and mix with a wooden spoon until it becomes a loose batter. Add 2 more cups of the flour and stir for 2 to 3 minutes, incorporating as much flour as you can with the wooden spoon.

Bring the dough together by hand and turn out onto a floured board or marble surface. Knead for 6 to 8 minutes, until dough is smooth and firm. Place in a clean, lightly-oiled bowl, using remaining tablespoon of oil and cover with a towel. Let rise in the warmest part of the kitchen for 45 minutes.

For individual pizzas or calzones, cut the dough into 4 equal pieces and knead into rounds. For one large pizza, knead into 1 large round. For either, let rest for 15 minutes.

i cannot stand pizza hut, makes me want to puke!! my husbands fav is pizza hut though. i'm not really a big pizza fan unless it's taco. and there is a place up the street from me called zoey's pizza, and their taco pizza is the bomb!! it's also like $30, so i don't get it as much as i want. :(

That's why that restaurant name sounded familiar! I remember the episode when they were going to Casabonita's. Hilarious!

he was a kid when he went there, maybe that's why he remembers it being better than it really is. plus he always tends to love things i hate, lol!! his great-aunt lives in denver, and he talks about going to see her, and then of course going to casabonitas. i think south park even did a show on it if i remember correctly, lol!!

"I have to laugh at the thought of an american pizza being the best. Isn't pizza an Italian dish ?"

So true, lol! I visited Italy 10 years ago, and I remember that the pizza was very different and very good, but for the life of me I can't remember what exactly it was like! *rolls eyes* I think I remember it being thinner than it usually is here.

@Kati, It's funny you mention that I was actually trying to think of some food unique to CO and that's all I could think of. Yeah we have it, but the food is really not good (most will tell you it’s gross), though I don't mind it, but it's not something you go to for the food. But it is a great place for kids. They have cliff divers and shows while you eat. Then they have a cave you can go through, and puppet shows and piñatas and old fashioned pictures and a lot more really fun stuff for the kids. But what they do have that is to DIE for is handmade fresh on site sopapillas (sp?). SOOOO GOOD!! So yes if you ever head this way take the kids there they will love it.

this is kinda off topic, but my husband always goes crazy talking about casabonitas (sp?) in colorado. have either christa or mary been there, and is it really as good as my husband makes it seem? lol!!

Having never been to Chicago or NY and since Mary has already poo poo'd every pizza in CO, my opinion probably doesn't count, but here it is anyway. :-P There's a place called Big Bill's NY Pizza and it's the best IMO. He's from NY and moved here, so I would think it's be pretty close to authentic, but I don't really know. But I love the big flat slices much better then the pan stuff. :-)

I have to laugh at the thought of an american pizza being the best. Isn't pizza an Italian dish ?

The best pizza ever comes from the local Italian Restaurant here that just won best pizza in the country ! So yummy ! And completely pregnancy safe, which is important when a lot of pizza's have the meat added after the cooking is done !

We live in a little village way out in the sticks here in the UK, and a super treat for us is when the pizza van comes.

It's two guys with a lot of initiative who have rigged up a basic white transit van with a real, wood burning pizza oven in the back!

It is amazing pizza, and you can see them make it from scratch before your very eyes. Yum.

I LOVE Little Ceasers bread sticks - the soft chewy ones.. A lot of times I'll stop and buy a couple of bags to serve with dinner.

Their pizza is ok. Its better than our Dominos. We recently tried the "new" domino pizza - omg it sucked... it was horrible. Even the kids complained!!

Hubby ONLY likes Pizza Huts deep pan pizza and it IS buttery/greasy but I like their other crust styles too and those aren't greasy.

The best local pizza place around where I live makes an awesome taco pizza!! It is so good, they make delicious subs and other pizzas too. If you are ever in Central Ohio, check out Peppy's Pizza, mmmmmmmm.

National chain would have to be Pizza Hut. The worst is Domino's. They have no taste!

I haven't found any local pizza places in my area I'm in love with. We've found Panago to be the best for take out. I like a Hawaiian (ham and pineapple) with italian sausage and bacon. Then I load it up with chili flakes.

I do everything homemade but breads. Anyone care to share their awesome pizza recipies?

Little Ceaser's is so gross. They open a store right down the road from me, at first I was like yeah 5 dollar pizza's. Not worth it I think there sauce taste really weird. Domino's is alright put I think pizza hut is better. There was this pizza place in Mechanicsburg Ohio were I use to live it was called Pizza Alley it was in the local Bowling Alley. It is by far the best pizza I have ever had (beside's my mom's) I have yet to find a place that taste as good as there's.

Ooh.. I forgot a couple local ones. Italian Bistro is pretty yummy, but Philly's is A.MA.ZING. And their Philly cheese steak is the best around here. I know this is about pizza, just had to throw that in there.

Alright, if we're talking chains.. Papa John's and Pizza Hut. I agree with Nikki about Domino's being hit and miss- we actually had Domino's at my nephew's party yesterday. While I love the new cheese they are using, it hardly has any sauce. I'm a sauce girl. Little Ceasar's is great if you don't want to spend much. CiCi's.. Bleh. That's all I can think of for now.

BUT, Caputo's Dry Tavern Inn still ranks #1 on my list.. And my family's list.

Love the Chicago deep dish!

My husband took me once to a pizza restaurant in Chicago, Giodano's (sp?) and the pizza there and a pizza that I had in Italy (can't remember the name of the restaurant) are the best pizza's I've had in my lifetime.

CAPUTO'S DRY TAVERN INN IN CLARKSVILLE, PA!!!!!

OMG!!! THE BEST ITALIAN PIZZA I'VE EVER HAD!!!! It's run by an Italian family and they've been in business since my mom was in high school, maybe even before. You just cannot beat their pizza.. Not even New York can beat their pizza and I used to live in NY and have eaten pizza up there.. Caputo's= YUMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Area of the country, style of pizza, toppings, etc...doesn't matter to me...For example, when I lived in CO I didn't eat pizza for 10 years...none of it was worth eating compared to Chicago...The crust was soggy and the sauce tasted like tomato paste...it was gross...

I don't think you can get a decent consensus on this considering the global living situation, lol.

But in Tucson, Magpies - if they're still around was fricken awesome. next to them, there was a tiny place was out on the wast side that made pizza from scratch.

Down near tombstone is another independent that makes great pizza.

Big chain pizza? We like Papa Johns and Pizza Hut. They're good, not great, but good.

My favourite pizza is from Salvatore's in Halifax, NS. It's beautiful, thin-crust pizza, fresh ingredients, and they're very old-school -- they discourage you from putting more than 3 toppings on it. I like mine with sundried tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms, and roasted garlic. Sooooooo tasty!

Im from the west coast and love Round Table Pizza and Oreganos.... very good... Just sucks that they dont have a Round Table Pizza around me and I am really craving a pizza from there. :)

[deleted account]

My favorite chain pizza is Fox's Pizza Den. I'm not sure how widespread the chain is, but almost every town around here has one. It's expensive, but they make to order and all the ingredients are fresh, never frozen. We budget to go there about once every other month. The rest of the time if we want pizza we order Dominos with coupons. I don't make pizza. The point of having pizza is not having to cook. =)

I went to New York in 2002 and wasn't too fond of the New York style. I've never been to Chicago so I don't have an opinion on that pizza.

ew...I hate mushrooms. bleh.

I don't really like meat on pizza, either. I'm a green pepper, onion, and black olive fan. Or nothing at all...can't beat a good cheese pizza.

mmmm Pizza!!

Ok, so USUALLY I buy the $3.00 deluxe rising crust pizza from walmart then add some REAL food to it...they are really good given the price and then I throw on onions, pineapple, grilled asparagus etc

Boston Pizza's spicy perogie pizza is Da Bomb, but I don't like paying so much on something that no body else likes or eats (it is pretty spicy)

Candaian 2 for 1 has an ultimate pizza that has baby shrimp BUT you have to eat it in the first sitting otherwise it gets soggy...

I have a recipe for potato pizzs which I make every now and then and is GREAT..can share if anyone wants the rec.

I can't believe I rambled this long about pizza. Obviously you all can tell I love it, and if I ever had a chance to go to Chicago I would be in SERIOUS trouble!!

So...some of my favs (and I'm not against the homemade kind, but it's like a whole different food compared to the Chicago pizzerias).

1. Art of Pizza (pie), just typing that made my mouth water...
2. La Villa (thin crust)
3. Gino's East (both styles)
4. Lou Malnati's (pie)
5. Giordanos (both styles)

I had some deep dish pizza when I was in Chicago. I don't remember what the place was called, it was some "famous" joint that my friend took me too. It was fantastic pizza.

But around here, I like home-made best. Steve makes fantastic pizza dough and I like to have the option to put on whatever I like. My current favorite is feta cheese, basil, and pineapple.

i love cracker crust pizza, my husband loves deep dish. he's been begging me to go to chicago for years now. i think i want to go to a dave matthews band concert at wrigley field this year, we'll see. i might get to go eventually, lol!! thanks for the websites, i'll have to check them out!

Chicago style is actually two different styles. Deep dish pies are the more famous of the two, but the thin crust (like a cracker) cut into tiny squares is the one I prefer...If you want to treat yourself to a decent Chicago style deep dish pie some time, check out Loustogo.com (I think) or Lou Malnati's on line. They will ship frozen pizzas almost anywhere, and they are spectacular. Not the BEST Chicago deep dish, but a very good one...

so technically i've had neither chicago or newyork, or california style (although, i shouln't of mentioned that one cause it shouldn't even be in the running, lol) pizza. but i am always watching food network or travel channel, and they always have the pizza wars thing on there. i've obviously tasted those styles but havn't set food into an authentic pizzaria from either spot. but i would have to say new york style most of the time, i cannot stand having to eat pizza with a fork, however if i'm in the mood chicago style is hella good.

Honestly, I like homemade ones the best. The dough isn't hard to make. And you can experiement with different kinds of cheese, veggies, meat and sauce and make it exactly how you want, according to your mood!
