I watched a Documentary last night with Morgan freeman, it was about how in Charlotte, Mississippi they still had separate proms one for the Black students and one for the White students.

And how on April 19th 2008 they had the first integrated prom in the history of the school.

(That town also has a history of Racist things that happened, hangings, Slaves…ect)

Morgan Freeman told the Senor class that he would pay for their integrated prom



First of all I was shocked that something like that even happened!

In the year 2008 they still had separate proms.

Some White parents were Sooo upset about the prom being integrated that they held a meeting and decided to raise money to have a separate prom for their White kids.



Many of the Kids both black and white were excited to have ONE prom instead of two. But many of the White parents were still pressuring their children to attend the white prom ONLY, and some did, but others also went to the integrated prom against the parent’s wishes.

Also those parents declined to comment on camera about why they were against their children attending. (and yet some according to their children were not racist at all, they jus didn’t want their son or daughter mixing and having Niggers dancing up on them)



What are your thoughts on that?

is that wrong, or harmless?

The town my parents currently live in (20 minutes north of me) had segregated proms until a few years ago. The reason? The proms were sponsored and planned by two different groups of students. And black kids prefer a different type of music from white kids. That's just the way it always was and nobody really cared. When the school decided to throw only one prom, nobody really cared about that either. It was fine.

In the South, there are things that are done just because that's how they've always been done. And it takes a long time for someone to finally realize, "Hey, why are we doing this? Let's change it!" Another example? The high school I went to had a white class president and a black class president. We also had a white homecoming queen and a black homecoming queen. It wasn't changed until after I'd graduated (in 2002) and the school got a new principal.

I remember when this happened. There were actually a lot of the black parents against the integrated prom too--the argument was from both sides. I never understood the reasons, but I do hate that it perpetuates the stereotype of the backwards, racist south.

What kind of ignorant scum would think that?
There are plenty of things that don't hurt people physically that are still considered wrong and still hurt people. Like racial slurs for one.

And your right, not much debate HERE, but……their are some people both black and white that would actually agree with the two separate proms because its not physically hurting anyone.

This is extremely wrong. It's 2008, not the 40s. There's no excuse for racism. Having 2 proms one for black students and one for white... is blatant racism. The parents not wanting their kid to attend an "integrated" prom (for fucks sake... integrated... ) need to be slapped.



That kind of attitude is totally unacceptable I don't care where you live or if it's your opinion or whatever. I saw a movie like that the other day, I can't remember what it was called but I think it had Raven in it.

i've heard of this before, i think sara h. has mentioned it in a racial debate before. i think it's ridiculous, and couldn't believe half the shit that's still done in the south. most of the schools that allow spanking still are in the south.
shit like this just keeps the divide going. i can't even believe it was legal to have a separate prom, you'd think that by 2008 somebody somewhere would've figured it out that this was still happening.
i've also heard that it was to protect the black students from hate crimes. um, IMO it's a hate crime to keep them separate! fucking ridiculous, absofuckinglutely ridiculous!!!

Dear god, I hope to heck we all say unified. I didn't know such people still existed in large enough quantities to have any impact on anything.
