Bras from what age???

My daughter started asking at age 9. She did not have any form of "breasts". I explained to her that she may think she wants to wear them but in all honesty, she will grow to hate them. I told her that it really is best to not rush it, since she really, truly, did not need one. I explained that as soon as she did, we would go out and buy her some.



This seemed to sway her for a bit. She did not end up needing one until age 12. My mother went out and bought her some at age 11. I was PISSED. That was supposed to be my thing with my daughter, not hers. Anyhow, my daughter tried them and rarely wore them. By age 12 though, she did and even though, it wasn't her first time getting some, we still did it together and bought the right ones for her.



So, I say, when they start developing. When they need one daily, not just for pretend, every once in a while. I only feel this way because I wanted my daughter to not hate them by the time she needed them. She had plenty of time in her future for that. ;)

from whatever age the girl is when she starts developing breasts. if that's 8 or 15 it doesn't matter, when boobs arrive buy the bra

When your daughter is ready you should buy her a bra.
My mom did not buy me a padded bra until I got my period which was at 13. (Which I did not agree with because I had boobs by 11)
I hope my daughter doesn't follow in my gene's and get hers that early.
I hate my period. It is horrible to manage.

Sydney is 9 and I get her sports bras..she is developing and it's noticeable..my niece is 14 and past a DD, I know she's self conscious because when she runs in karate, she holds her chest and all the boys parents tell them not to hit her in her chest..which Is limiting and kind of singles her out. Sydney also has the cami shirts but when she put on a certain shirt Monday I had to send her to get a bra..you could clearly see she is developed for 9...so this is the age for us. My 9 year old niece isn't far behind and when I saw her the other day I wanted to give her one.

I agree. I let my daughter decide when she want to wear bra and when she does want to.

I need one really early. I never got to wear a training bra, I was already a B cup at 9. It sucked. I hid the fact I wore a bra by wearing a bunch of tank tops and extra t-shirts underneath.

If my daughter tells me she's uncomfortable with her nipples or boobs without one at that age or before, I'll get her one. If she isn't aware that she needs one, but still does at a young age (like I didn't) - we'll have a talk and we'll get her one together. I don't want her to be embarrassed at school without knowing ahead of time or getting attention in a bad way at a young age (like I did before my mom and I had the "talk").

Whenever my daughter feels she is developed enough to need a bra and feels uncomfortable without one, I will take her bra shopping.

For me, it is about comfort rather than modesty. A school friend of mine wasn't allowed by her parents to wear a bra (or use deodorant, or shave her underarms) until she was 16, and the poor girl used to suffer real discomfort in gym class with her fairly well developed breasts bouncing all over the place!

I have to say though, I hate the trend for padded bras intended for very little girls. I was shopping in Primark last year for underwear for my then 3 year old daughter, and came across padded bras in her age section! We are not talking cute little crop tops, or training bras, but proper padded bras. I was shocked, to say the least.

It seems silly and a little creepy to spend any time thinking about, let alone buying something to cover up a little girl's nipples, but if other kids in my daughter's class were wearing them, I wouldn't make her be the odd one out.

I was still wearing the hated undershirt in grade 8, because I didn't need a bra. I needed a bra emotionally!

But why would girls want to wear a bra before they need to? Somebody needs to tell them what a pain it is. After breastfeeding, I'm up to an enormous B cup! (and now I miss my As. What do you mean, wear a bra every day??)

As soon as they need one. My almost 9 year old wears a bra type cami when she wears certain shirts, otherwise her nipples that are budding show through the material and it's not modest nor does she want to draw attention to her blossoming body.
But I would say when they need one and want to wear one.

as soon as they start developing. i was wearing a training bra at 9 and a hideous c-cup bra by the age of 11. my younger sister was wearing a real bra by the age of 8 because she needed to. but the way i see it is if you do not have boobs forming you do not need a bra



I might add i was a 10 E before nursing and even over 12 months after nursing finished im still a 12 G i hate wearing a bra so why would anyone who doesnt have breasts forming want to wear one! theyre torture i tell you

Any girl should have a bra from whatever age she needs the support or is showing. I have seen kids as young as 6 need them and kids as old as 12 that was just needing them.

Teresa, I'm from Iceland, that's in Europe. I only referred to Hawaii as wearing my short shorts were I live right now. Sorry if that got you confused.



Nikki, fair enough. Different cultures. I'd never let my 11 year old walk around in a skirt that shows her panties any time she didn't stand up straight, or a shirt that shows her belly. But if we are at a beach in Europe that allows her to take her top off, I wouldn't tell her to cover up if she wanted to lay topless in the sun. I also wouldn't go after her to take her top off if she didn't want to.

You saying it's about modesty just got to me, because I feel it's more about comfort.

age is definitely not a factor, i had to wear a bra when i was in grade 2, my sis didn't need one until she was 16. Its when they start getting breasts that they need one.

Is a bralette like a training bra?? well yea i agree with what the ladies when you can see the little nips thru the shirt then i think its time to cover those puppies up. even if its just with one of those girly undershirts. cuz i see even young girls that just seem to have nipple nubs or whatever that are noticable thru their little shirt and of course you wouldnt give a 3 or 5 year old a training bra ( at leas i wouldnt cuz then she might think she is grown) but yea and then when she is 9 -11 and if it is noticeable thru the undershirt and t shirt or if she expresses that she feels like she may need a training bra and agree then thats when you introduce the bra and then when the breasts are actual present and blooming then regular bras. yea you cant really put an age on it i know it middle school i knew grils that were already B's C's and D's!! man talk about me being self conscious!! lol yea they told me i was apart of the itty bitty titty committie!! ugh terrible lol but yea some girls devlope early others not so much. so just keep an eye out haha

I answered your question the best way I could. I am not talking about walking around topless all the time. I just said what we would not allow.

I don't agree with going to the pool or beach topless either. But that is my opinion and my personal feelings about it.

I'm talking about a day at the beach, not that I'd let my child go to school with her boobs hanging out or butt showing.
I see it as two totally different things. You're at the beach or pool to get some tan. You're not going to walk topless to school or the grocery store.

And yes, I do wear short shorts several days a week... but I live in Hawaii and most people do anyway.

I think that is up to an individual, or in the case of a minor, to their parents. I personally would not allow my daughter to leave home with any cleavage showing, or with a skirt that came above her knees and no midriff showing when her arms were raised over her head.

But again, I am a conservative, I believe that people's thoughts are directly linked to what they see and how they perceive it. I do not wear short shorts. I do wear a bathing suit while swimming, but no two-pieces, I make sure my boobs are completely coverd, my belly does not show and I prefer a skirt. But my SIL wears a string bikini to family functions.

I don't approve of it, but I don't critisoze her because I know it is her preferred style.

So, if it is legal to go topless, and you are comfortable with your body, more power to you. I wouldn't do it.

I do think it s an individual decision though. I just know what we would allow in our home, and what I don't want my son to see. But as a parent, it is my job to instill that in them and to teach him to avert his eyed when he knows the attire of another person is not something we approve of and we feel he shouldn't see.

Bras should be worn whenever they are ready to. I was 9 years old when I started. Some girls mature earlier than others. I personally would rather a young girl wear a bra early than not where one and you can tell she is uncomfortable or gets teased for it because parents wouldn't let her.

We come from different cultures. When I was growing up it was ok to run around topless. The newspaper on a sunny day had a picture of topless people at the pool on the front page (no one sued). Still today, I'm not a shamed of my body and I'll take my top of and lay in the sun wherever I can. Problem is that in the US it's illegal most places, while in Europe it's not.

Bralettes are very much like training bras or t-shirt bras, but mos of the time include more padding. Not as much support as a sports bra usually all cotton, no wires.

Hope that helps. I would think of them more as transitional bras for pre-teens and young teens or just a covering for a smaller breasted woman.

I live in Ohio in the US, I am originally from the southern US, so I see a difference here in the way that even adult women dress. If a girl knows from a young age that those parts are supposed to be covered, she is more aware of how much skin is showing later in life. That is not to say that women shouldn't show whatever they feel is okay, but young girls and even teens should not be showing everything they have off.

I think that is a lot of why we see girls as sexualizing themselves, by waning to dress as an adult when they are a pre-teen or young teen.

I just know that because of when and how I developed and started wearing those undergarments, I am very aware of my body. I was unfortuantely one of those girls who went from the plainsthe the Rocky Mountains almost over night. By the time I was in Fourth grade (9-10 yo) I was in a B-C cup bra and am now 25 and a 38F. So I think that as soon as my child starts to show interest I will allow her the bralette or training bra to develop good habits and that she should cover herself appropriately.

That is what I was refering to, Iris. But if you disagree I would welcome any feedback you have to offer.

As soon as my daughter started complaining, we went shopping. She needed the support.

I don't have a problem with the bralettes. I don't think they are sexualizing. I think it teaches our girls from a young age to cover up and be modest. Which let's face it is not something they get from the outside world. I was 8 when I had to start wearing a bra because I was developing. So if my daughter wants to wear one at five, I see it as a good habit being developed

I don't think age is really the factor. It's when a girl develops. When I was in grade school I knew girls who were probably already a C or D cup in grade 6 well others had nothing until they were in grade 9. I'd say once the nipples start protruding and can be seen through the shirt, it's time. That's when I started wearing one... it was grade 4 and I wore an A cup bra. My mom noticed it was time and took me bra shopping. I do remember it being kind of embarrassing during gym class though. There was only one other girl in my class who wore a bra and she was "larger" than me. The other girls teased me and said I didn't need a bra yet and why was I wearing one? But looking back on it my mom was right in her timing because I did have little 'nubs' you could see through my shirt. A bra helped make them less revealing and I did have more than any of the other girls in my class who didn't wear a bra.
Unfortunately being an early bloomer had nothing to do with my final endowments. I reached my peak, so to speak, by grade 6... a B 36.

I think whenever. If they want to wear a bralette at age 5 like mum then why not. I don't see the big deal. I always wore pretty bras lol for myself I see it when I look in the mirror before I put a shirt on and I feel good knowing I have a nice bra on rather than a tan t-shirt bra.
