It was just on the news that Breastfeeding dolls are now available to buy .
These dolls come with a singlet for you child to wear , the singlet has daisies where the nipples should be .
The doll is then placed in the breastfeeding position on the daisies , the doll then makes suckeling noises .
Phsycologist's ( sp ? ) in Australia say it is unessecary and is the early Adultification of children .

What do you think ?

The pasties thing is what really threw me off..I was having flashes of pole dancing in my kids future...haha. Anyways..honestly I think toys are getting a little to complicated with the mimicking real life and adulthood. My daughter got a barbie doll that came with a dog that poops. We have two dogs so my daughter knows that dogs poop but does she really need a dog that poops so she can play clean up the dog crap. We took the little poop pellets out and threw them away..she did not like the pooping effect.

My daughter prefers more creative play in fact..no exageration she is 6 and has never really gotten into the playing with baby dolls. She doesn't like them and does not want to play mommy. She got a baby doll when she was 3 that cried and moved and mimicked what a newborn does. Well the thing freaked her out..she kept crying asking me to make it be quiet and since then has wanted nothing to do with baby dolls. She prefers to play with stuffed animals because she talks about being a vet. I don't have an issue with little boys or girls playing with baby dolls as a way of learning how to nuture but I don't like the idea that somehow girls SHOULD be playing with baby dolls and toys that are deamed feminine so they can learn to be women because that is what they are suppose to do when they grow up..make babies, cook, and clean.

Ack! Very odd idea. I'm very pro-breastfeeding (like you couldn't tell from my profile pic) but the concept of this doll is warped IMO. I really do not like how so many of the dolls come with baby bottles, and I will be sure to return any dolls my daughter receives that comes with one. I want her to learn that breastfeeding is the normal way to feed a baby. But children do not need some weird doll & shirt to help with imaginary play. If my daughter decides to breastfeed her dolls, that's fine. But I don't think it is necessary for her to have a doll for that specific purpose. You can do anything with a plain old doll, from teaching it to cook, dance the rhumba, sell lemonade, or just cuddle. But there is no need to get action specific. And the fake daisy nipples are just wrong.

I will say the "adultification" comments have me perplexed. Isn't the purpose of childhood to learn adult actions & behaviours through mimicry and role playing? Breastfeeding a doll is just the same as playing school with your dolls. Should we stop our kids from doing that because they should always be students & never pretend to be teachers? It sounds like the "adultification" concept comes from people who think breastfeeding is sexual.

Well, at first I was going to reply that it was no big deal. Little girls grow up playing with dolls that they bottle feed. Maybe if they had a breastfeeding doll, little girls would grow up and be more apt to breastfeed. Then I saw the creepy video with the halter top with pasties on it. Maybe just have the suckling baby that could either breasfeed or bottlefeed. Just get rid of the creepy top, geeze laaaweeze.

[deleted account]

I'm not sure I'd buy the doll for a child, but I honestly can't figure out what everyone is so worked up about. How is this any more 'adultification' of little girls than letting them play house with a toy kitchen or letting them bottle feed their baby dolls? I had a doll when I was little that ate off a spoon and peed in its diaper - but I don't think it caused me any psychological harm. Breastfeeding is no more an 'adult' behavior than bottle feeding. I'd say my bigger worry is that all these specialized dolls take some of the imagination out of play.

Yes, and in our civilized society that has progressed out of the bush we have horrificly low breastfeeding rates and yet the bushpeople almost never fail at nursing their babies. What exactly is wrong with traditional cultures that makes you think that our society is better?

Civilzed and advanced indeed...

You two are crackin' me up!! Sharon, I was going to mention the med forms but I didn't want to give it all away at once!! Thanks for the laugh, I needed that after some of the more serious threads!!

As for the menopause barbie. I'm thinking a little electronic fan would be a wonderful accessory. Your choice of colors, pink or purple! Can't go wrong really!

I'm not sure how I feel about the doll. It sounds like the company went a bit too far with dasies and all but to be honest I didn't see it. I would be happy if my daughters bf their dolls. I do think society isn't open enough to bf and children who are exposed to it as the norm are more likely to do it. What I am not clear on is how such a doll would lead to a sex talk. Nourishing a baby through bf is just as sexual as bottle feedin a baby.

I agree with many other poster though...IMAGINATION! All those silly dolls are totally unnecessary! I like a good classic doll!

[deleted account]

I'm going to have to stop you ladies right there. The mestruating barbie was my idea and I already have a patent in the works!! So, there : ) Also in this series will be the geriatric barbie, bed pan and walker included! Such a fabulous collectors set!

[deleted account]

Young girs who have seen their own mother breastfeeding younger siblings pretend to do it to their dolls and soft toys anyway so I don't think it's that creepy. If Bratz dolls and other toys that sexualize everything can be allowed on the shelves, I don't see how this can be so bad.

I don't really have a problem with pregnant Barbie either. I would prefer it if she looked a little less perfect after child birth like most moms though.

These are just toys and parents who don't like them, need not buy them.

My daughter also prefers the barbies with animals. She enjoys playing with the animals more than playing with the barbie doll. She is not really into the Bratz dolls...she thinks they are kinda of ugly. She is big time into Hannah Montana because she loves to sing and dance. She likes playing her disney sing along game on the Wii but most of the time she prefers running around outside.

Yes...my daughter's freind has the pregnant barbie. The belly is magnetized so it is removable and inside the belly is a little newborn baby. Not a fan of that one or the fact that they also sell barbie clothing that looks like lingerie and outfits that include a teeny mini skirt and belly shirt with thigh high boots.

Well, now we need "Drunken Bar Slut Doll" then "Hangover Doll" and then "Oh shit, Plan B Doll" and then if "Plan B Doll" works, you then have to buy "Menstruating Doll" and if "Plan B Doll" 's batteries fail.........., then you can buy pregnant Barbie and the breastfeeding doll.

That about cover it?

I know, how gross would that be?? I guess my point is where do we draw the line? And I mean we in the truest since. If 'we' don't buy it, they will stop coming up with this crap. Hopefully : ) I for one do not want my daughter to learn about breastfeeding from Mattel Toy Corp. or whomever created this 'thing'.

[deleted account]

ewwwww Good point Allison (shiver) gross. Can you imagine? Having company over and the little red tampon is on the floor and the company would be like "Hey what's that?" "Oh, that's my 2 year old's tampon for her baby doll" I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

This is just . ... hmmm. . . I don't even know what word would best describe it. Wierd, sick, gross. . who's buying this? Anyone out there? I get the doll that pees and poos. We all pee and poo. I get the doll that you bottle feed. It's not unusual to have a toddler feed their new baby brother/sister with a bottle. Breastfeeding, although very natural, belongs in the realm of adults, not children. Besides a money making gimmick I do not see the postive benefit this doll will have on a child. Perhaps they should come out with a doll the menstruates, as clearly we Moms do not have the brains to introduce these concepts to our children on our own, at our own time. It could come with pads and tampons. . depending on what you would like your little girl to discover. . . Even some that are red, and some that are not. Give me a break.

I think a little girl pretending to nurse using a regular baby doll is perfectly fine. I think it would be good for the image of breast feeding. This doll just kinda goes to the extreme, though. It was the sucking noises and moving mouth that made it weird/creepy/scary/odd. My daughter has seen women nursing their infants and asked me what they were doing. I said "Some mommies feed their babies from their body." And she was okay with that. She asked me once what a woman was doing (bottle feeding) and I said "Some mommies give their babies bottles for eating their meals." When I have my next child I'll nurse (unless something really odd happens) and when she asks me about it I'll explain it to her again. I want her to know that breast feeding is a normal, natural part of having a baby. But I don't think a doll with realistic movements and sounds is a good idea. It just seems artificial. :/

[deleted account]

I think it's ok for one person to think the doll is creepy and for someone else to think it's fine. If you like it? Get one. If you don't? Don't. Personally, I think they are creepy. But maybe if I had a little girl I would have a different opinion. Who knows? I was born in 1971 and I've never seen any dolls with genitals on them except for in therapy (as a child). Not saying they don't exist, just that I've never seen one on the toy aisle at Wal Mart, Toys R Us or Target. I probably wouldn't get my son a doll with genitals on it because when I teach him what his body parts are, I will use his own personal body as the example.

.....a child could pretend' to breastfeed ANY doll....
so what's with the vest anyway?

Stupid ways for toy companies to make money off of hot topics in motherhood today.
It actually annyos me that they're exploiting breastfeeding by making a specific doll for it. Any doll and a good imagination would do.

While breastfeeding is natural and I support it, it's not natural for a 5 year old to breastfeed either! I just don't know on this one...on the one hand, if a child sees something they will imitate it, and breastfeeding isn't wrong or anything to be ashamed of. Other the other hand it just seems kind of creepy to me...
