Butter or Margarine?

Which do you prefer? Which is better for you? What are those deciding factors? Which brands do you prefer? Does it matter?

I use plain old butter- store brand. It has a lot of fat! But neither of us are overweight, so it doesn't matter too much to us right now.

Butter is actually better for you generally speaking. However, if you're on a seriously low fat diet due to gallstones or pancreatitis then you can't eat butter.

Butter is generally better BECAUSE you use less of it to feel just as satisfied.

Butter! Margarine makes me gag. My moto is "if it makes you want to vomit ... it ain't good for you"!

We buy margarine, just bought Becel made with olive oil, not sure if that makes a difference or not lol. But for Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner, we buy butter. But it hurts me physically to buy a $5.99 stick of butter instead of paying $3.99 for a tub, so we avoid it other than special occasions. (We don't use marg/butter very much, so cholesterol isn't much of a concern for us :D)

butter. i grew up on margerine, and while i liked it, i never knew the awesomeness of butter until about 3 years ago. i got really interested in butter watching my cooking shows, adn it has stuck ever since. i do keep margarine for some things, but all in all it's definately butter. brand does not matter to me. the cheaper the better, lol!

"But not all margarines are created equal — and some may even be worse than butter. In general, the more solid the margarine, the more trans fat it contains — so stick margarines usually have more trans fat than do tub margarines. Like saturated fat, trans fat increases blood cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. In addition, trans fat can lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol levels. Spreads such as Benecol and Promise Activ are fortified with plant stanols and sterols, which can help reduce LDL cholesterol levels.

When selecting a spread, be sure to check the Nutrition Facts panel and pay particular attention to the grams of saturated fat and trans fat. Look for products that have the lowest combined amount. Also, look for products with a low percent Daily Value for cholesterol.

If you don't like the taste of margarine or don't want to give up butter completely, consider using whipped or light butter. Or look for products that are a blend of butter and olive or canola oil. Per serving, these products have less fat and calories than regular butter does. The important thing is to use them sparingly."

For the most part I use margarine. I like the healthier kind, like Becel. But I do get real butter at Christmas and Thanksgiving or if I'm baking something that just isn't the same with margarine, like shortbread.

Butter.

Margarine is unnatural.

Brand doesn't matter, but when we are able to spend more on groceries I'd like to switch to organic. And there is this local brand I've bought only once. It's non-homogenized and yummo but super expensive.
