I'm shocked by this and I grew up in the 80's. My mom only made me give it to my brother and it couldn't be helped since our rooms were next to each other and we shared the house.

Dyan, that says that there is a (rare) reaction that the vaccine can CAUSE shingles, not that you can still get shingles after being vaccinated.

The lillipop thing is gross and I'd never do it.

I don't care if other people want to do the chicken pox parties but we won't be doing any of that. I'd never TRY to get my son to get them. I'd never even heard of such a thing as a chicken pox party until CoM's and I grew up in the 70's ~ 80's. If my son gets them, he gets them. If he doesn't, he doesn't.

My daughter was exposed to a cousin who had it but she never caught it. I never vaccinated either child (for chicken pox, not in general). The both went through over the last couple of weeks. It was a breeze, not a lot of scratching (nothing a bit of calamine couldn't take care of) and no scars.

Well I don't have to worry about such things all our kids are vaccinated against the Chicken pox.



Although when I was a kid that is exactly what parents did as it started going around everyone would bring the kids to the infected persons house to get their kids infected too.

My parents took me to another state to catch chicken pox from my second cousins... We went to the zoo while we were there and my parents have pictures of me in my stroller with chicken pox watching the animals... Then when we came home my best friend came over to catch it from me. It was really just the thing to do...



My kids aren't vaccinated for it because the vaccine wears off by adulthood and chicken pox is WAY worse for adults. I would rather my kids get it as kids and have a lifetime immunity (at least a higher chance of lifetime immunity, at least).



As for the lollipops... GROSS! ::shudders::

Wow, thank you. I was always told the opposite and that how chicken pox parties were justified -better to get it young than risk shingles as an adult. I haven't heard of anyone doing them nowadays but they really don't make sense.

Janice: You can ONLY get Shingles IF you've had chickenpox before. If you've been vaccinated for it and never actually gotten sick with chickenpox...YOU'LL NEVER GET SHINGLES.

I don't agree with the chicken pox parties. Get the vaccine if it's vailable in your area and keep you id home if they have it! With too may kids running around with chicken pox, someone will eventually get very sick from it, or come into contact with someone who could (or a pregnant woman) and THAT would suck. I don't see why we have to puposefully infect our kids. Now they reccomenf a chicken pox booster in canada at age 6 to ensure the antibodies are active through the school years. My kids will get the shot for sure and no chicken pox parties for them!

My brother and I were exposed to chicken pox many times when we were little. I got it when I was 18, even then my younger brother didn't get it, then when he was 18 (3 years later) he got it!

I wasn't sick, but it was a very hot summer so VERY uncomfortable. Around Christmas when I was supposed to be working in a bookshop and just before I was supposed to dance in a ballet performance wearing a white tutu - doesn't coordinate with spots! It was all a bit depressing.

Not sure whether I agree with parties or not, the lollipop thing is weird.

pox parties make me mad to think about. why on earth would anybody purposely infect their child with something that could kill them? even if it doesn't kill them it makes them pretty damn miserable. i don't get it, and i never will. it makes me quite mad when i think about it.

Chickenpox vaccine is only about 80-85% effective.I would not bother with it personally.

Janice,both my parents had chicken pox as children and got shingles as adults so I think shingles is a risk regardless of when you have chicken pox. Chicken pox is a herpes virus and so it stays in your body (dormant) but can surface at any time. Especially if you are stressed or physically run down. But you are right about getting chicken pox as an adult is worse than getting it as a child. :-)

I remember when I was 6 I got the Chicken Pox and gave them to my brother. Good times. I think the neighbour kids got them next and I don't remember how I got them.

My 7 year old is vaccinated against chicken pox so there's no chance of her getting the virus.

And HIV/AIDS can only be spread through blood and heavily concentrated body fluids (IE Sex) I took care of a man who had AIDS and I took all the basic procautions and haven't contracted it.

When I was a kid chicken pox parties were the norm. It was a family thing for me - got it on purpose via my cousins.
Sharon I do believe you have it backwards. It is better to have chicken pox when you are you because if you dont and get them as an adult it usually becomes shingles which is very serious.

However, now there is a vaccination, so it is really unnecessary to put your child through the illness on purpose. When I was little we just hung around the sick person, no lollypops, and if we got it good, if not ohwell.
As for HIV this is not an easily spread virus (blood only) so there would have to be some crazy things going on at a chickenpox party in order to get that!

Both my kids were vaccinated. I don't agree with chicken pox parties, why deliberately make kids? Plus, once you have been sick with Chicken Pox you then run a high chance of getting Shingles when you are older. Shingles is very painful and can make you very sick.

No to the lollypop. But I'm keeping my ears open for the next round of chickenpox, because my 2 year old and I are goin' visitin'! I remember when my sister (2) and I (6) had chickenpox it was like a revolving door at our house, kids bustling in and out! I think if my son hasn't gotten it by age 7 I'll get him vaccinated, because age 6 already was no picnic. (no scars, but I was more miserable than my sister, and my friend who got it at age 8 actually got sick-sick from it!)

It's how I got the chicken pox when I was a kid. It was how everyone got them when I was a kid. The whole neighbourhood had chicken pox at the same time and then we didn't have to bother with it anymore. The lollipop thing is just wrong.

I'm surprised how many of you say that chickenpox parties were the norm growing up! I'd never heard of them before COMs! My brother and I never had CP growing up, and he still hasn't. I got it at 19, and it sucked! Still not okay with having my kids deliberately infected, though. My 3 yo has been vaccinated and my youngest will be at a year too.

I just think allow it to come to our children naturally.My two are 2 and 7 and have never got it.
They will one day.I got it twice.Very bad both times.I agree also i think i would pass on the party also.

I have had both my kids vaccinated and grew up where chicken pox parties were just what you did, although I don't think I would do that with my children. I do know that they have been in contact with children that have have it and not been infected, this being before they were at the age the vaccination was due.

The pox parties, on the other hand, I don't really have a problem with. While I personally choose to get my children vaccinated against chicken pox, I think if you're not going to, exposing them to it, from a known child who you know is otherwise healthy, while they are still young and serious illness or complications is less likely, can be an okay alternative. Plus, you have the option of exposing them to it at a time when it wouldn't be a serious inconvenience if they got sick - over the summer for example.

The lollipops is kinda gross. You never know what else that kid may have had. I don't even share my own lollipops with my friends (and I HATE sharing even with hubby or the kids XD MINE! XD)
I don't know how I feel about the parties. When I was young, I played with my friends up until they were bedridden and miserable. Everyone I knew got it, except me. I'm still hoping I never do XD (apparently I did get the measles though, cause I have the antibodies. Never any symptoms or anything though, go figure :P)
I can remember a year at school where everyone got it. There ended up being like 4 or 5 kids, including me, in the class for almost 2 weeks straight.

I don't think I'd take my kids to a pox party, but I'm not going to shield them from it either. No chicken pox vaccine and no flu vaccines for us, thank you very much :P

well i was planning on purposely exposing my son (6) to chicken pox, but then i found out recently he already got the vax. i didnt know! i was (still am) annoyed because i didnt want him to have it. yes, i have always been told what shots he was given and explained what they were for and possible side effects. but i most definitely do not remember being told he was getting the Varicella vax and if i was, it was most definitely not explained because ive always known i didnt want him to have it.

as for the passing around licked lollies, gross!

We did this a children, but my brother and I never got it. My mom got pretty unnerved because she tried so hard. I ended up getting it as an adult from my prevoiusly vaccinated son.....yeah, it sucked!! My brother also got it from his daughter, who thankfully, gave it to my daughter. After getting it as an adult(and almost being hospitallized), and seeing my son and neice had no immunity from the vaccine, we had one heck of a party to spread it around! But I draw the line at mail order lollipops, YUCKY!

We don't vaccinate against chicken pox here in the UK, getting it is almost like a rite of passage.
Pox parties I don't have a particular problem with, although it's not something I've done. My 2 girls just naturally picked it up when they were about 2yrs. I was glad they got it early, neither of them had very bad cases of it.

Lollies and stuff licked by kids though.........YUK!

Well, most viruses don't survive past a day out of the body, HIV just a few hours.

I don't have a problem with pox parties, we always did that growing up.
