I'm allergic to nickel also. I get horrid rashes from cheapo earrings. I just bought a nice pair of 9ct white gold earrings and wear them all the time now instead of bothering about changing earrings.

My grandma swears by colloidal silver! I think it's great but I don't really need it I'm never sick. I'll try it one day.

Unfortunately, this is why people have to buy the finest jewelry when allergic to certain metals.

I am allergic to several metals, including nickel, but not silver.

When buying jewelry, if you want to go with the cheapest of the finer metals, you'll usually go with Sterling Silver 925 (obviously that's if you're using silver and not gold :P and look on the inside of rings and underneath necklace pendants made of metal to see if it says SS 925 or Sterling Silver 925 and to check to see what the chain itself is made of, usually by the clasp it will say SS 925 or Sterling Silver 925 and that will let you know that it's USUALLY the safer bet). Oh, and the 925 means that it's 92.5% silver and yes it is made with other metals, like the one mentioned above by Mylene (copper).

Of course, there are the even finer Silvers.. Like Platinum and Palladium. Palladium is the most expensive that I've found, best quality and unfortunately the rarest, as I've never been able to find a lot about it until a couple years ago.

But anyway, sorry for going off topic.. Just wanted to put that in there..

@Carol, I know this may be off topic since it has nothing to do with the use of silver but you may have a pinched nerve that goes from your spine to your bladder preventing it from healing properly... Maybe you can look into kinesiology and chiropractic to address this issue. I'm sure the silver could help but IMO getting to the source of the problem is better than treating the symptoms... Hope this helps

I have a problem too. I can ONLY use A Z-Pak or Cipro. I too am allergic to sulfa and any form of penicillen.
I will see what kind of info there is on UTI's.

My husband has made it at work. Him & a friend have used it to treat a number of things, and I've used it fairly successfully for acne. I've actually been researching how to utilize it for urinary tract issues. Because doctors are so clued out on the problem I have, they over treated me with antibiotics for years, and aside from being allergic to Sulfa & Cipro, I am resistant to
Ampicillin and Tetracycline. So I have very few options left if I do end up with an actual infection. If anyone has ever used it for this, I'd appreciate some tips.

Cathy, I'll second what Mylene said about silver jewelry. I sell jewelry (very much a part time job) and it's typically the other metals in the jewelry that cause allergic reactions. Stirling is a mix. Silver plated jewelry is usually pure, but if it wears off, your skin can get exposed to the other metals and cause a reaction. You'd probably be find with colloidal silver, but I totally understand your concern!

I'm allergic to silver too, but when I used the silvadine for my burn, I had no reaction.
The antibiotic problem scares me too. Poeple don't finish them, misuse them......it's only a matter of time before they're null and void for anything.

From what I've read about using colloidal silver for strep B, most recommendations are 3 teaspoons a day for two or more weeks. It is hard to get info on dosing because it is not classified as a drug and distributors aren't allowed to recommend dosages for treating medical conditions. I'm sure if you spoke to a midwife who had had success with this or speak to a naturopath, they may be able to give a better idea of doses.

@Cathy, you may not have been allergic to the silver but rather to another metal they use to fortify the silver... You will rarely get silver that is pure in jewelry... Sterling silver is an alloy of silver and copper and more often than not people are allergic to the copper, not the silver... You may still be allergic to the silver but i would check to make sure!

I will definitely look into this type of therapy!

You can buy plasters (band aids) here with silver. I'm actually scared to try them because I used to be allergic to silver jewellery and I don't know what would happen if I absorbed it into my bloodstream!

Thanks for bringing up this topic. I wish more people were aware that there are options other than antibiotics. It scares me to think about the overuse of antibiotics. My pediatrician told me that strep throat is no longer treated with the same antibiotic as it was just a few years ago, because it has become immune to the antibiotic. SCARY.

A few years ago I found it at Whole Foods for $40 for about 20 ounces (if I remember correctly). That seems steep when you can make it (forever) for the price of one piece of silver and distilled water. But if you aren't comfortable brewing up a batch at home, and you have the money, then it's a good option. Thanks for the website by the way.

@ Karla, you took it 3 times a day, but how much each time? You've got me interested in curing my Strep B! We've used silver to get rid of strep throat, tonsillitis, acne, infections...I wonder why it didn't occur to me to use it for that?

Yep, makes sense, but with my luck I'd start an electrical fire or something. I was looking online of all of the variations and I think I'd be safest with either a suspension or topical already made up :)

I don't know where he got his peice of silver that he uses. He's been doing since long before we got married. He probably purchased it on the internet, but I'll ask when he gets in from work.

For the acne, he did the "recipe" that I posted then mixed the water with vitamin E cream. You really don't need a ton of the collodial silver water in the cream for it to work.

I may have to post a picture of what it looks like when he does it. He wraps the wires on alligator clips which he clips on the silver. Does that make sense?

I took it 3 times a day for a week (maybe two, I don't remember exactly) and then just once a day for the rest of my pregnancy. They wanted me to be hooked up to an IV during labor to treat gbs too but I was really against it. Thats how I discovered c. silver to begin with!! I was willing to try just about anything and my midwife told me about it. Now I use it for all kinds of things!

The "recipe"
Fill a large glass mason jar with distilled water. Then run an electrical charge through pure silver that is suspended in the water. Do this for four to eight hours, depending on how strong you want it.

Karla, thanks for the info clearing up turning blue. And for the strep B info. I had to take antibiotic during my labor for that. How much did you take each day? It would be worth a shot to do take the silver.

I actually used silvadine cream for a burn and it was gone within hours. I had no idea it was a derivative of colloidal silver. That stuff was AWESOME!
I don't go by the FDA, FYI, I was just pointing out that it wasn't FDA approved.

Oh one more thing I just thought of after reading the posts above. The FDA does approve a medication called silvadine cream for severe burns. It is a colloidal silver derivative. They use it in hospitals as a stand of care for burns. It heals the wound very fast while also preventing infection, which is the number one concern for burn victims (infection). So I guess the government thinks its ok sometimes just not all the time? Gotta love the FDA!! lol

Oh and turning blue due to "too much colloidal silver" toltal myth! Your skin can turn blue but not because of too much. It is a rare condition where the body actually absorbs the silver into the keratinocytes of the skin. The chances of this happening are as good as your chances of, well lets say, getting struck by lightening or getting some rare form of cancer.

At the recommendation of my midwife, I took it everyday for the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy to treat "group B strep". It was good for two reason, it treated my gbs and it also protected the baby during birth against exposure to gbs, as I'm sure he had remnants from me in his system.
When I had the gbs test done at week 34 it was positive and by week 39 I had it retested and it was negative. Now I use it for colds and flu among other things. My 84 year old grndfather takes it daily as a preventative due to his declining health and immune system. It works wonders and who cares if the FDA approves it or not?! They approve far too many synthetic drugs that are extremely harmful and almost no natural remedies so I tend not to trust the FDA with whats best for my health anyway.

@ Sara, I would love the recipes too. I think the "turning blue" factor would be using A LOT of it. ANd really turn a little blue or have cancer? Not much of a toss up there.
I'll be candid, I'm a newbie to colloidal silver, but it seems awesome. So many possibilities. Like I said when our bodies don't take to anibiotics any more, this might be a good replacement.

I believe it is only a matter of time before the benefits of colloidal silver are recognised by mainstream medicine and as soon as pharmaceutical companies are able to isolate and prove the precise nature of silvers healing effects, more and more approved products will become available. Colloidal silver is not to be mistaken with many other (topical) silver products on the market that actually are FDA approved and in regular use by medical professionals. Silvazine or Silvadene cream is an antibacterial topical cream containing silver sulfadiazine that is in regular use in many hospitals and by prescription for major burns and skin grafts. There are a great many antimicrobial wound dressings containing silver particles that are used for a number of differing types of wounds post-surgery, routine dressings and available over the counter. As a nurse I have seen a great amount of success with topical uses of silver, both in hospital settings and in the community.

Obviously the concern with colloidal silver is related to bodily retention of silver particles as well as the unknown factors involved in adjusting dosage for differing conditions. These factors are important in considering ingesting silver vs. topical applications. There is reason to be cautious with ingesting colloidal silver, but due to the success of topical treatments and the many beneficial properties of silver, I think it is worthy of more research to determine safe dosages and accurate dosages for specific conditions to protect and improve outcomes for the many people who choose to use colloidal silver products. Mind you, if it does become classed as a drug, approved and regulated by the FDA, prices will likely increase and availability of the product may become restricted.

This is taken from a colloidal silver site (http://www.silvermedicine.org) regarding FDA ruling not to approve the product:

While the FDA does have valid points against the "colloidal silver industry" as a whole, none of these points has anything to do with whether or not isolated silver is safe in reasonable quantities or whether or not it is effective in fighting infections. Not only has the FDA approved at least one silver product for use in wound care, but the FDA has done its own research to determine if colloidal silver has potential as a significant medicinal substance:

"The FDA has tested colloidal silver extensively and found that different microorganisms succumb to its action at a wide variety of concentrations and exposure times. If any of this information entered the public domain, the FDA would consider their own research "unsubstantiated medical claims" and reason enough to classify colloidal silver as a new drug..." - Peter Lindeman, long before the FDA's September 16 ruling

Of course this website is biased towards the benefits of colloidal silver, but it does still raise some very valid points regarding benefits vs harm, the need for educated use regarding dosage as well as the FDA ruling of the product as a dietary supplement (simply because the product is a natural substance and not a controlled substance) not to be marketed as having medicinal properties and NOT for external use despite the fact that the FDA has approved other silver products for topical applications and their non-approval of colloidal silver appears not to be motivated by any data suggesting harm.

I don't think it would be safe, even in small amounts, so I wouldn't use it. I just don't see how putting metal in your body or on an open wound as a treatment could be safe at all. But that's me.

I've used it. I stayed with a shaman and his psychic naturalistic mother *insert gasp of awesomeness here* and they had some. One of my ear piercings got horrendously infected and I put some of this stuff on and it was cured within hours.

Shhh...my husband makes it at home. It works. But be careful...the silver deposits never leave your body and build up and make you turn blue. For this reason, I'll only gargle with it when I have a sore throat and never swallow. My husband has mixed it with vitamin E cream to use as an acne cream for his friend, and yeast infection cream for his aunt (haha!). Worked like a charm.
