Colorado massacre...tougher gun laws?

In light of the tragic shootings at a movie theater in Aurora, CO, do you think our (USA) guns laws should be more strict? Why or why not?

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/U...

What do you think when someone says, "People don't kill people, guns kill people?"

Who would benefit from stricter gun laws, criminals or law abiding citizens?

I do not think we need stricter gun laws. The people like the man in this story and other criminals will always find a way to get what they want. Maybe what we need are harsher puniments for those who have illegal weapons, are involved with the sale of illegal weapons and in crimes committed with firearms. (legal or illegal)

Thoughts?

eta...I know this particular guy did not have illegal firearms, I'm referring to people like him.

They do?!? Yes crime happens. What about the penal system? Things would be much more chaotic without it. Yes, the system has its flaws, much like anything else, but it does work. So should we just get rid of it since there is still crime? I mean, that is the same train of thought as not having tougher gun laws. In your mind, why bother? Then why bother with the penal system since we still have criminals? We would have a hell of a lot more crime, rape, murder, theft, incest, and every other crime that you can think of without it. With tougher gun laws, a limited amount of guns per house along with ammo, and make the system a bit tighter and more thorough background checks and psych evaluations, there would be much less weapons on the street. That would equal less crime. It may take a while to get a large quantity off the streets, but we would see the effects in the process. I don't understand how people think it would not help. You are all so worried about baring arms and keeping your rights, you are not seeing the big picture. This would not mean people would not be allowed to own weapons, it would mean you could not by an assault rifle, own vast amounts of gun and ammo. HOW is that a bad thing? You could still own your precious weapon of death, just maybe not so many. And I really like the idea of having to pass a psych eval. I mean, a guy like this and crime could have been prevented. Wouldn't you want that?

Because we live in the real world where criminals do what they want and controls only harm the good guys.

But Jackie, you miss my point. If there weren't so many guns available for them to steal in the first place, it wouldn't be such a problem. But let's not forget, in this instance, this man should NEVER have been able to purchase an assault rifle and that much ammunition legally. Gun control would have ensured that didn't happen. I can't for the life of me understand why people are so very against such measures.

Those are what we like to call criminals. Pretty sure my husband wouldn't sell his gun to a thug.

And lets not forget that for every gun purchased illegally, at one point, it was purchased legally by someone.

Really Julianne? You may want to rethink that statement. This guy bought EVERYTHING legally. Everything was legal until he started shooting up a movie theater. He was following the law to buy the guns. It was so easy, he didn't have to go searching for a seller illegally selling them. In many cases, Criminals access products to break the law, legally.

We don't need stricter gun laws because criminals don't obey the law.

Funny enough in a zombie apocolyspe I may just change sides. But i'd still have cricket or baseball bat lol. It's ironic because I had a terrible nightmare not long ago that there were zombies but they couldn't climb my family and i were on a ledge. My 2 year old wondered off and zombies were heading for him i ran for him. Was running with him back to safety didn't think i'd make it so i threw him to his dad and only just made it myself. I woke up although pretty tired lol adrenalin pumping went and checked on my kids. I knew it was a dumb dream but still had me a little on edge when I woke up. Thinking would I do if it was real. Don't worry ladies I also cry over things my partner doesn't understand. Especially while pregnant and just after having them. Crying because my little man is growing too fast. :(

OK OK, you guys and your sappy crying....Today I was driving to work and on the radio was a story. A man had been swimming in a lake around here and he lost his wedding ring. He hired divers to find it and they came up with nothing. Now a year later and a 10yr old boy was swimming in it and looking for "treasure", he found the ring. The other day, they were draining the lake and the boy was down watching, when a man said "I really wish they could find my friends wedding ring". The boy said, I found one a couple weeks ago. The man was interested and got the boys email from his mother. The man that lost his ring contacted them and found it was HIS! He went and picked it up from the boy and gave the boy a HUGE hug! Well, I tell you, I was a mess pulling into the parckade at work.... damn hormones, I tell ya!

LOL...I cannot watch that shit. I remember when I was preggo with my first, I must have been about 7-8 months. We went to see king kong. I HATED the first 2 hours of it! I was writhing in my seat with boredom. I don't even really remember the ending, but I was sobbing for like the last 45 minutes, totally out of control. I was laughing at the same time cause I just could not control it. My husband was a mess not knowing what to do! BAHAHAHA!

Oddly enough, I was raised in a home where no gun was ever seen. My dad just recently got into them and is loving it...my mom...not so much. She would definitely be cheering for you ladies right now. My husband's whole family hunts, and he does too. It was a given that he would want guns in the house.

I'm sorry all of that happened to you. I have to confess something, now that you mentioned a baseball bat. One time my husband, a few of our friends, and I were discussing what weapon we would use in the event of a zombie Apocalypse (don't make fun lol) and they were naming all sorts of weird, high tech, assault weapons and when I was asked I said a baseball bat. My husband was shocked!! I said well a baseball bat doesn't run out of ammo and it wouldn't jam. Having said all of that, I have to say I get where you are coming from with the baseball bat. Nice choice ;)

I definitely do think it is partly about how you are raised. But I don't even like toy guns in my home. My son is starting to understand why. He will never own a gun under my roof. My husband does not like guns either, and does not find a need to have one. I would prefer to spend money on an alarm system first. Not only is it quick response, but it gets money off of your insurance also. Most of them also protect and warn for fire so that is another reason I would prefer an alarm system.

~♥Little Miss - posted on 08/03/2012

It is very scary to have your personal space violated, no doubt. I just don't find a need to own a weapon. If I need one, My husband has an aluminum baseball bat in his closet. I will go for that. I have had my car broken into twice, and my husbands car window broken into. I have had a drunken man walk straight into our home not knowing where he was. I have had some freaky shit happened, but I would not have felt better with a gun. I lived in the midwest for 10 years, and it seems many people own guns there. MANY people hunt. I was in the depths of that for a long time. It is just not in me to feel guns are a good thing.

But Jackie, that's the point most people are trying to make. Gun control isn't about saying no guns at all. It is about controlling how many, which types, who, all of those things. It needs to be stricter. This incident may have still happened if you had stricter gun control (because he did already have one of those guns for quite some time), BUT I can guarantee that not as many would have been killed or injured.

Yes, you are right Little Miss. I do not know. Thank God I didn't find out what was on his agenda. I was assuming that yelling at the top of my lungs that I was armed while I was standing no more than 15 feet from the door would be loud enough since it was loud enough to wake up my daughter in her room but no I don't know

Also, you saw the man breaking in and had enough time to go get your gun? That would have given you enough time to call the cops. That is what I would have done, grabbed my kids, my phone, hid in a locked room and called the cops to protect everyone. If the guy had a gun, and did not care, he could have and would have shot you first. Beings that you have no idea what his history is, he could have been a crack shot.....better than you perhaps.

I agree with you, Jodi. No one NEEDS 20 guns and an assault rifle. The only time I touch any of those other guns are when we target practice. I am most comfortable, and extremely skilled in shooting, the one that could and would have saved my and my daughter's life.

~♥Little Miss - posted on 08/03/2012

Jackie, you just don't know that. You may FEEL that, and you may FEEL safer with guns, but don't say something would have happened a certain way when you can never know for sure. Anyhow, you have 20 guns in your house right? That is overkill...pun intended. If you need a rifle for hunting or 2 rifles, and 1 for home protection, that is 3. I don't feel anyone needs 20 guns in their home. That is MY opinion. That scares me to think about what someone would need that many weapons for. I do think there needs to be strict gun regulations, and a limit for how many 1 household can have.

Jodi - posted on 08/03/2012

Oh, and even if that IS the case, you still don't NEED 20 guns and an assault rifle. I will never agree that this should be as accessible to the average person.

Nope, he saw my gun. I yelled out when he was trying to open the door that I had a gun and he didn't care. When he broke the window next to the door (it's a small narrow window) and SAW me, he looked me dead in the eye and obviously saw the gun because it was pointed at him he ran

"That is false. You are unaware of the crime in our neighborhood."

In YOUR opinion. My opinion differs. That doesn't make it false.

And I've lived in some pretty bad neighbourhoods in my time. Believe me. I have never felt the need for a gun.

Unless you put a big sign on your front door (or front gate) telling everyone you have guns in your house and will use them.....how exactly do you think it is a deterrent? In which case, having guns is only useful if they break in. Exactly how many times have you had people break into your house while you are there and have you had to get your guns out to protect yourself?

ETA (because I saw your edit): So you bluffed that you had a gun and that worked......

Little Miss, I totally get what you're saying. We all live differently. I know for a fact that if that break in situation were to happen again and that man got in and I had no weapon...I would have lost for sure. I'm not saying that guns don't get stolen from homes and even used on the owners, I've heard of that happening...but it won't happen here.

SMH. Jackie, it CANNOT be any worse than where I live right now, and I feel safe and not victimized without a gun. I would have a hell of a lot more fear that my apartment would be broken into and it would get stolen.

**Jackie** - posted on 08/03/2012

That is false. You are unaware of the crime in our neighborhood.

ETA: Not that this is anyone's business but I feel compelled to stress my point. Almost a year ago my house got broken into. My husband was out on a fire call at around 2:15 am and I heard strange noises. I found that someone was trying to break in the back door. I called the police and they wanted me to stay on the phone with them. I told them I had a gun and I would shoot them if they came in. I yelled as loud as I could that I had a gun but it didn't make any difference. The guy couldn't get through the door so he smashed through the window that was right next to the door. I yelled that I had a gun and at that second he froze, looked me dead in the eye and ran off. His face was covered with a bandana and he was never caught. I felt like even though I was 5 ft tall, no more than 120 lbs and scared to death of someone hurting my baby, I managed to actually scare him away.

No, not really, because I don't have to live in a country where there is apparently so much fear that people are ok with military assault rifles and ammunition sales being a free-for-all. That's sounds like your problem, not mine at all.

a) Chaya, you are part of a VERY tiny minority that would know what to do and assuming that the entire country would be able to do what you can do is silly. (and again, the time it would take to get it done without just being able to walk into Walmart would at least slow them down)

b) If it's not the gun laws, what is it about Americans as PEOPLE? What new social programs that they need? Is it possible that this is an inevitable outcome from capitalism?...the result of telling people that they are measured by the money they have and the things they acquire and then making it impossible for half of the population to acquire anything legally?

perhaps.
