Could this really be true? A Minneapolis couple named Pete and Alisha are letting the internet decide if they should keep or abort their baby. Yes, deciding whether or not to become parents comes down not to serious soul-searching but to an internet poll. Although the poll lets you weigh in multiple times, Pete says he will weeds out multiple votes to in order to make it a true representation of how readers feel.

Why in the world would someone let total strangers make such a deeply personal decision? Says Pete:

“The whole point here is to let people have a real way to voice your opinion on the topic of abortion and have it actually make a difference in the real world. By voting on whether to continue or abort an actual pregnancy, you are doing so much more then simply telling an elected representative your feelings. You are actually changing something in the real world.”

As the voting continues, the couple posts sonogram shots and tidbits about what’s going on inside the womb, now that Alisha is almost 17 weeks. They plan to wait until the last possible moment to decide; according to the laws in their state, December 9th is the last day they could go through with the procedure. The couple told Gawker that the poll will influence their decision heavily but won’t be binding.

Should a decision like this ever be put to a public vote? Do you think this is really a prank?

-------------------------------------------------------------

This is so disturbing on so many levels. So if they decide to keep the baby, will they tell him/her that they left her fate in the hands of complete strangers?

I just messaged them, after reading all I could stomach on their website.

"I'm pro-choice. I can't see a situation in which I'd have an abortion myself, but I also can't tell another woman what to do with her body or make decisions for her.

What you're doing here is sick. What the hell kind of people are you? Trying to compare political voting to voting on something that is ultimately YOUR CHOICE. There is NO comparison in who I vote for in a Senate race and what YOU decide to do about your pregnancy. Who I vote for in a senate race affects a great number of people if my guy /girl wins. Whether or not you get an abortion affects no one but YOU. You are trying really hard to make it sound like you're intelligent, but really, you're just seeking attention.

Well, you've got my attention. And here's what I think you should do. Get HELP. I would never recommend someone get an abortion but I definitely don't think you need to be parents. If you decide not to go through with the abortion, I hope you at least have the decency to give the baby up for adoption so that he or she can be raised by people who weren't CARELESS enough to put their fate up to the public. This is a personal issue and I cannot believe anyone would ever be so.....morally lacking as to stoop so low. This whole thing reminds me of how back in the days of the gladiators the leader would hold his hand out, thumb extended. Up was for live, down was for die and the sound of the crowd decided. That poor baby."

See, this is one of the problems with the internet....They can cause all sorts of drama and get people riled up about something so controversial but at the end of the day they don't have to face peoples lashing out if they choose not to...All they have to do is delete the blog, close the browser, whatever....Cowardly if you ask me :(

I believe they are prolifers trying to make a ridiculous point. The whole point of choice is that it is personal, not up for public opinion.

My first thought is ,OK what do they need to sell? You know, like when stars have a movie out or CD out you see them EVEYWHERE. So who the hell are these idiots.Things like this make me believe that people should be tested before having children, because what kind of people do this ? Geez

"Jodi, there's nothing wrong with being pro-life."

Where did I say there was anything wrong with being pro-life.....???

I will say, however, that there is something wrong with anyone who is pro-life pulling a stunt like this to prove a point. I would say the same if someone who was pro-choice pulled the same stunt. To be honest, I think it degrades either movement.

Jodi, there's nothing wrong with being pro-life.

But at any rate, that was stupid to pull some kind of prank like that. What the heck is wrong with people.. They must have way too much time on their hands.

I figured as much. I did do a google search on their names a few days ago, and a couple of the links with their names came up with the Church of Global Warming. So none of this surprises me. When I first saw the site it stank of pro-life, anti-choice to me.

I don't understand that one bit. This is a personal decision to make with your spouse/partner, not something to be decided by any kind of third party.

That's discusting. Plain and simple. Prank or not its a horrible thing to do. Bringing a life into the world is an intimate and private decision.

It seems to me they want to see how many people they can outrage. A sick joke. A study to see how many people would actually VOTE on whether or not to abort.
WTF??

i can't imagine that this is true.....if they have to ask a bunch of strangers what to do ,then maybe parenting isn't for them, whats going to happen when the baby is born and they needs a name, if they should circumsize a boy, breast or bottle, when to change a shitty bum, it really amazing and sad that they are doing it at all.

Ok the only way for me to process this is thinking of as them looking for additional information, hoping to read information they didn't consider yet.

I find it sad they're putting it off so long but to each their own.

FYI - my vote would be "ABORT NOW"

If they are that insecure and insensitive they really don't need to be raising a child they'll be emotionally detached from.

Wow, this shocks me. IF i were to ever even contemplate abortion, that is such a private thing I don't htink I even could post it anywhere on the internet. My fear would be that they would decide to abort after heavy public influence, regret it tremendously and blame the rest of the world instead of taking responsibility for their own decision.

Even if they keep the baby, I think the law would still question their parenting if they want to leave such an important decision up to the public.

Wow...that's the type of people I would want raising me! Geez they sure don't need that baby so put it up for adoption! That's sick and wrong! Isn't that a crime or something??!! It should be!!!

Wow, that's just disgusting! I sincerely hope they would not honestly abort their baby if the majority votes to do it. On the other hand, people this stupid should not be breeding!

They are dumb. This isn't going to be any kind of true representation of how people feel about abortion. It will be an indicator of how stupid the public think they are and that is all. People will probably vote abort even if they are pro life because these people are clearly too stupid to be breeding.

[deleted account]

I agree, I think it's a publicity stunt. A sick and twisted publicity stunt, but one none the less. At least that's what I'm going to tell myself because the alternative is so sick and wrong.

see, i doubt there is a life really at stake, i truely think it's a ploy of some sort to prove a point.... they are using soooo many abortion stereotypes, and the blog itself is to methodical and planned out. ....

Sounds to me like the couple is taking this as a complete joke. Who in the world would do something like this, other than heartless people? This is something that only them two should be deciding on. Truly sad.

Whether they are doing this to prove a point or not, chances are there is a life at stake.

Here is a copy of my response from the Welcome Page:

I just can't believe they are doing this, how ridiculous! I imagine they are doing it to prove a point. I think, in reality, most people wouldn't choose abortion anyway. Many people who are pro-choice would still not opt for abortion as an option, they just think it should be legally available for others if they need it. So I don't think there was ever really a risk that the vote FOR abortion would overtake the vote AGAINST her having an abotion.

I think the concept, however, is repulsive.

yeah, the more i read this site the more i see they are merely trying to stress a point, i'm seeing them as prolife, yeah definately prolife but feeling that thier own voices are stifled by politicians, they say they want to keep the readers informed on the pregnancy as if it were our own- from this i would gather they want the reader to take the perspective of it being thier own pregnancy, thier own decision, they want the voters to have an attachment to this pregnancy.... my guess is that they are all for mandatory sonograms and developmental info for all those considering abortion..... they want voters to take it seriously, metaphor for taking actual political voting seriously?

Amanda - posted on 11/18/2010

i really think they are just trying to make a point or using this as a experiment of sorts.....
"You can vote and choose whether we abort or keep our unborn child. For the first time, your vote on the topic of abortion can make a difference." this quote from the site seems to sum it up, i think they are trying to get across a point that no matter who you vote for the laws on abortion aren't likely to change, this clearly annoys them and they feel that the general public doesn't raise enough stink about it so they are trying to draw people out to "be heard".... i just can't decide if they are prochoice or if they are prolife.... i'm leaning more towards prolife trying to prove there are more prolifers out there? i'm sure when dec. 9th rolls around we will have more of an explanation

either way it's a sick thing to put on the 'net

I think this is sick and distrubing. Allowing the public to decide whether your baby has the right to live or die....what next...polls for should I commit suicide?

I just read this in my FB feed. =/ I started a thread since i didn't see this one when I first did a run through, it's deleted now.

Anyway..

It's disgusting. Even if it's fake, it's wrong. Someone wrote on their website that they are doing it for their 15 minutes, or something along those lines. It, sadly, wouldn't surprise me if it was all for the attention.

[deleted account]

I'm really hoping it's a prank, but even if it is, it's seriously...just....wrong. I guess the whole freedom of speech thing gives them every right to do the poll and even every right to use it to help them decide. But come on, this is a personal decision. It's not friggin' American Idol or Big Brother. Kinda makes me wonder if they do decide to keep the baby, are they gonna put the baby's whole life up to a vote? Cloth or disposable diapers? Breast or bottle? Public school or private? Come ONE AMERICA! Tell us how to raise our child! Stupid asses.

I do hope it's a prank cuz that would mean a real baby's life is not in jeopardy. Prank or not though I think it's sick and sad. :(
