Curvy Girls

Ah, i've always been an in between.. i'd call me hourglass.. now i'm a pudgy hourglass (I don't htink pudgy is negative - in my mind at least).. but I only gave birth 2 months ago, so i've gotta give my body some time. I'm big boned, even when I was younger, the smallest size I ever fit in was a size 12, becasue I have large hips (and i'm one of those lucky girls with a nice round butt - not big.. round). Most people don't think I weigh as much as I do, my body's ideal weight (where it likes to be, and where I look best) is 165-170.. i'm only 5'9" but honestely if i'm under 165 I look skeletal.. I'm also more muscular because I worked in construction for a while, and muscle weighs more than fat.

@Joanna, I think I'm the one who said "normal women". If you'd read my whole post you'd see that I was saying all healthy women's body's are beautiful. When I made the normal comment I was referring to Kim K and Beyonce being example of curvy women. I feel they are hollywood skinny and not a good example for a normal non hollywood curvy women. It was not meant to offend anyone. :-)

My husband told me that, if I weighed 50 lbs. less when we met, he wouldn't have even approached me! I am a big girl. I also have an hour-glass figure (so I've been told many times).



I have been on both the "skinny" and the "fat" side. I felt so much pressure to be thin while growing up, that I actually became anorexic. At my personal smallest, I was a size 8... and all skin and bones. I was fainting every day from malnurtition. I started eating agian (after almost dying from popping pills to try to lose more weight), and ended up at a size 28. I've since dealt with my "issues", and am in between those two sizes, which is where I am happiest. Nobody (who can see me) ever guesses my actual size or weight, though. They always think I'm about 50 lbs. lighter and two sizes smaller. I'm short, thick, and muscular with an hour-glass shape. I love being a "sexy hobbit" (as my husband calls me)!

I'm not even going to the site, as a skinny person I get sick of the whole, skinny is disgusting. Whatever, I am what I am. Although my ass is pretty big now. Since my pregnancy I might be considered curvy. My husband has liked me every step of the way, that's all that matters.
As far as if the word curvy goes, I think it can be a compliment and be rude depending on who's saying it.

It's just a silly facebook fan page. Several of my male friends joined it as well. I don't think it actually puts down skinny women. People have their preferences.

When I think curvy I think hourglass, and the more extreme the hourglass the more beautiful I might define the body. However, I don't put down skinny girls. I think girls who are rail thin can be just as beautiful, they can achieve an appearance of grace and elegance curvy girls will never have- IMO. Not always, some girls strive to be too skinny and it doesn't suit them and they end up looking like crackheads. I think beauty is really a matter of what comes naturally to you, I will never in my life be rail thin. I admire the ballerina-esque girls, tall and tiny and graceful, they remind me of gazelles lol. Might sound weird but it is a compliment.. But I'll never be that so I embrace my curves, all body types are beautiful. Most of the men I know prefer curves, by my hourglass definition of curves. Most men are naturally inclined to want curves, actually. I forgot the waist to hip ratio that they tend to prefer, but its an hourglass. It also depend son the country you're in, varies significantly. I think my male friends appreciate ALL body types, although they lean toward curves they won't deny the beauty of anyone just because they don't fit that curvy mold. I think they fear super skinny women because they seem more fragile "I feel like I'd break her if I touched her" kind of attitude.

That group is just pathetic. It's nothing but a jealous bitchfest to bully people.
By all means celebrate your body. More women need to be proud of their bodies but you don't get that from demeaning others.
Just because someone isn't curvy doesn't automatically make them anorexic. I'm slim. I always have been. I'm not all skin and bone. The term skinny really irks me. I view it as the equivilent of fat. I'm healthy. This is the shape I'm meant to be.

I wonder how many of the women in that group would want to take me on in a chocolate eating contest with out fear of wrecking their diets!

The word "curvy" makes me think of hourglass figures. So i wouldn't mind being called curvy really.
I have always had "curves in the right places", though my hips did get way bigger after the kids! My only issue is that my tummy isn't as flat as it used to be. (not that it was ever that flat in the first place! lol)

I think it's sad that women at either end of the spectrum (or anywhere inbetween) need put others down to "celebrate" their own shape though.
It seems like women are just naturally insecure about the way their bodies look, and we should be supportive rather than critical.
With me now, i've kind of given up worrying (to a point) i always end up around the same weight and i'm too lazy to do sit up's to get rid of my flabby tummy (hey, that's what floaty tops are for!) so i make the best of what i've got! :)

I agree with PP's. It's more important to love yourself and be comfortable in your own skin, than it is to be worried about what society as a whole has deemed acceptable.



However there is that line where some are just using being curvy as an excuse to not do anything about their weight issues. They hide behind "men like curvy women better anyway" or equal BS lines to not put in an effort to be healthy. Same goes to the other spectrum as well. Some women starve themselves or damn near kill themselves to be skinny because it's "what men find attractive".



Should it really matter that much?



Edit to add: I know no one is innocent either. Everyone at one point or another has fallen prey to what society has deemed "perfect", even if it's only a momentary lapse.



When I met my husband I was a size 12 and 160 lbs. I could maybe get down to a size 10 but even that is pushing it. It is my body structure, I have always and will always be wide in the hips and in the shoulders. My grandma told me (when I was 16 I might add) that I had "good child birthing hips". Thank you! Gramma.



Most of the men I know like curves. Most are ass men though too. My husband included. When I started working out to lose the baby belly his only concern was that I would lose my ass. If only, along with the wide hips I have a butt. The few I do know who like skinny women, are fairly skinny men themselves. I don't know if that holds true for everywhere, I just know it's true for the men around me.



In the end though Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. More than one friend finds guys gorgeous that I find absolutely disgusting. It's all in perspective. We all have different aspects (be they physical, mental, etc.) that we ourselves are attracted to that other people are not.



If more people would stop worrying about what others thought about them maybe society as a whole could shift their views away from what's been deemed acceptable.



On an interesting side note:



Recently one of the radio stations here posted on their morning blog some photos of Brittney Spears. A british mag (I think?) got a hold of the real photos from a recent shoot of hers. It was amazing how much she had been airbrushed and slimmed down... all because 'society' thinks that's what women should look like. Especially ones in the spotlight.

Am I abnormal for not having curves? I've never had curves (unless I'm pregnant of course), I can't help it, my family has a super fast metabolism that I inherited.

And i agree with Kate but even she has succumb to the Hollywood ideal , Australia is fast creeping up on America in the obesity stakes , and i totally agree we need to know what is healthy for our own bodies !!

I will never be flat chested or have small hips , even at my skinniest i still had curvy hips and i was probably so skinny my ass was an indent haha but i never expect me to look like Kate moss :)

Agree with most. Curvy is fat where a women should have fat. However I don't think it's fair to compare the two body types. I am definitely curvy, while pregnant and nursing my boobs are F's (yes it does exist) when not a D-DD and I've had hips since I was born. lol! I definitely have a little more weight in other places that I would like to get rid of, but no matter how much weight I loose I will never be a bean pole. Now a good friend of mine is 6 foot tall and I don't really know her weight but it's not much. No matter how much weight she gains she will never have boobs or hips, it's just not her body. I think both are beautiful as long as they are healthy. I think that's where the problem is, when someone like me wants to be a size 0, it will never happen healthfully. On the flip side I don't like it when obviously overweight women (Queen Latifah before she lost the weight is the only example I can think of right now) use the term curvy to excuse their obesity. In the US (I'm not sure about other countries) we have a severe obesity problem and people who are need to address it. So it's a hard medium for us women. It's ok not to be a size 0 but it's not ok to be a size 28. I think we all need to just focus on what is healthy for my body.

Side note I don’t think Kim K or Beyonce are good example, yes they has curves but they are still skinnier then a normal person. I think someone like Kate Winslet is a better example for us normal women. :-)

I love the term "curvy" as well. Just like Jocelyn said, it means you have "fat" in all the right places. Personally, I don't know about Betty Page (pretty much all the pics I saw of her when I looked her up were close-ups of her face), but Jane Russell, Jean Harlow, Ginger Rogers.. Pretty much all the Old Hollywood actresses were all curvy. To me, that means woman.. Being curvy and not stick skinny. I remember when my husband and I were dating, he commented on how he loved my stomach b/c it was "real". It wasn't almost sunken in or perfectly flat.. But it was real and he loved it. Of course, he was a stick when we were dating, so he probably just didn't like bone on bone, but he loved it nonetheless and still does..

I love the term curvy ^_^ To me it means you have "fat" (lol) in all the right places! I am curvy, and I love it. I have a wonderful hourglass shape (but no butt either!!!! where are all our asses???)

My hubby loves curvy girls as well. I am actually one of the smaller girls he's ever dated! The majority of my guy friends prefer a girl with something rather than a girl with nothing. As one guy friend so eloquently put it "a girl who can take a good pounding" o_0 LOL I have always loved curvy girls as opposed to super skinny; I think they are beautiful. I think that women should be (and please excuse my lack of better terms) squishy as opposed to boney. I also don't feel the need to "put down" skinny women to make myself feel better. I think it is unnecessary and mean. I knew one girl and she was skinny as a stick, always had been. She tried so hard to gain weight but could never keep anything on. She was made fun of because of it and to me that's just the same as making fun of the fat girl. But she was gorgeous; fantastic skin and she could rock a pair of skinny jeans like nothing else.

What it really comes down to is how you carry yourself; if you are curvy, EMBRACE IT, if you are skinny, EMBRACE IT.

I agree -- you can celebrate curves without putting down women who are more angular. Body acceptance is not a zero-sum equation -- what you give to yourself does not have to be taken away from someone else.

And my husband has been known to refer to me as "luxurious". I can live with that. ;)

At my skinniest i had the tiniest body and an even tinier waist with great big DD boobs , i was stopped by a woman in my home town who asked me if i was a anorexic , my very blunt sister would tell me i looked like a junkie , after my first pregnancy i was surprised at how many people complimented me on my new shape , i had one guy come up to me and Jamie at a pool party and tell him how sexy i was HA! i was gobsmacked since i felt ....large , i now look back on that body and realise how good i had it , hindsight is a wonderful thing , my sister is always complaining about her body and she has the body of a swimsuit model , no joke , i tell her to appreciate it now because one day she will have kids and things will change .

Oh and that Butt Katie , i dont have one either , i refer to mine as my crack in the back , i would love a big butt !!!

When I met Trav, I weighed in at a "whopping" 119 lbs...NOW, after 4 1/2 years of marriage and two babies, I weigh about 20 lbs more...He very judiciously tells me that while I was "smoking hot" to look at when we first, he prefers me now...a little curvy...he also tells me that I look better without makeup tho...so, I'm not sure if i should trust his judgement!

I saw this group too...i felt a little bad about it to be honest. I've struggled with my weight and body issues my whole life. So when people put down either group of women, I feel bad...I'm not sure why we, as women, feel the need to say these kinds of things to and about eachother...I've never picked on someone or ridiculed them for their weight...Women come in all sizes (naturally); there's not a right or wrong way for a woman to be shaped. Every person is beautiful...no one is better or worse than anyone else!

Loureen I agree that the word 'voluptuous' has wonderful connotations :) I also agree that Beyonce is hot as hell! lol.

I think focusing on the beauty and advantages of curves does help in alleviating the societal and media pressure to be very thin. But I don't think it should come at the expense of all those naturally skinny girls. That is the only problem I have with this curvy 'movement'. All the comments about 'go eat a cheeseburger', or 'you're mad because you haven't eaten in a week' are not helpful. It doesn't have to be an either or, but I think that because so many women are openly rejecting the thin ideal (and those women who dedicate their lives to achieving it) that the naturally skinny girls get caught up in the bad feeling too.

I was the super-skinny girl in my early 20s (5ft10 and 60kg/130lbs). I had gained about 10kg by the time I fell pregnant, was still slim but definitely 'curvy'. I have that ass that you want Kati!!! lol. And then I ballooned while pregnant and have only started to lose it in the last couple of months. So given that I have been skinny, fat, and everything in between, I feel like my perspective on this is pretty fair.

Personally, I prefer myself as a curvy girl. When I was super-skinny I looked like an anorexic junkie (and I was neither). I was an A-cup, had twigs for arms and a protruding collarbone. At the time I thought I looked great, but seeing photos now makes me cringe. I prefer to have boobs and an ass (even though it's still bigger than I'd like right now, I've always loved my bum lol!).

I agree that we should be able to appreciate all sorts of healthy bodies (as I referred to in my OP), but most people will always have a preference. I know of one guy who likes skinny girls because he can 'throw them around in bed' :-s Then my brother and father, and my closest male friends, all find curvy women more attractive. It's personal preference, there is no right or wrong answer.

First off i think the natural body of a woman no matter her body type is beautiful .

I love the word curvy , it really does evoke thoughts of a woman to me just as everyone has types they lean towards i personally think a woman with hips , breasts and ass is hot , i love the old school shape of women like Betty page to the newer shape of woman that is Beyonce and Kim Kardashian ( even though she is a brainless twit ) .

I actually had this convo with a group of my guy friends a month or two ago we were discussing a girl in my town who had just had a baby and they were all saying how incredibly hot her new post baby body was , yes she was curvy , I said to them " yeah but she lost all the weight and looks emaciated now " ( she looked thinner than what was natural ) all the boys agreed her new unnaturally thin body made her look sickly with grunts of " yeah not hot at all anymore "

I also LOVE the word voluptuous it sounds so ......yummy LOL i think its been given bad connotations these days but i find it a very sexy word !

There is so much pressure on women to be perfect in every way personally i think thats sad , i love that women are all different shapes and sizes , what a boring world it would be if we were all the same shape , there are men who adore slimmer girls and men who adore curvy girls , if we all adhere to " perfection " whoever's ideal that is , no one would be happy , celebrating your own body and treating it with respect is really what women should be doing instead of trying to reach the unattainable .

i wish i was curvy. i love that body type. i define it as a big ass, big boobs, and more weigh on your body just in the right areas. i have weight alright, just not in the right areas-it's all in my stomach. i have no ass, not big boobs, not too little though, lol! that's what i find attractive.
i think skinnier girls are attractive as well, but i definitely prefer a curvier look. i know my husband likes butts, so how he ended up with tthe girl who needs butt implants is beyond me. he says he likes my butt, but you know, he kinda has too. i honestly can't think of anyone who prefers a skinny girl over a curvy one.

I am so sick of this fat vs. skinny, curvy vs. small, whatever you want to call it. Are we so unsure of ourselves as women that we have to put down whatever size we aren't just to feel better about ourselves? Why can't we just like ourselves the way we are, and celebrate ALL sizes?! I'm sick of bigger women saying skinny women are anorexic, and I'm sick of skinny girls saying bigger women are fat and eat too much, blah blah blah. It's getting really old.

I think it depends on the tone of how someone calls you "curvy". If someone came up to me that I hadn't seen in awhile and said "oh my god wow you look........ curvy........" like they are searching for a polite way to say you have packed on the dough, then I might be a lil hurt. But if it's someone saying "I love it when you wear that, being all curvy makes it look even better!" then obviously it's a compliment.

I don't think there's a reason or need to put anyone down to feel empowered. Curvy or thin, the second you start to try and look down on others for not being the same way you are is the second that you've got some ugliness to you that would be there regardless of shape or size.

Devon doesn't really have a preference I don't think, he's complimented women of all shapes and sizes. He prefers me though, no matter how curvy or uncurved I may be ! :D
