I always wash my new stuff - clothes, linens, dishes, if it's new it's getting washed. I don't know where it's been before I picked it up. I don't know who may have tried it on or touched it.

Where's the disturbing button?
That's so.... Ewww.....
I have always washed my new stuff especially clothing, most of it was made overseas and for me that just means that there might be some other germs that aren't native to Canada and my neck of the woods, so in the interest of national security I wash and I wash well. lol
But seriously there isn't any reason that one day some super flu couldn't hitch a ride from Thailand in a package of Fruit Of The Loom tighty whities.
I also wash all my fruits, and dishes, pots, utensils etc.

I always wash underwear and bras but thats it, my great grandmother told me not to wash my daughters colthes before she wore them because it would give her sensitive skin, so I never have.

Cathy yeah I'm not sure about this woman either, there was a lot of blood and not just in the crotch. If I did have to go clothes shopping during my period and I got blood on the clothes I would buy them, and I would insist on bagging them myself. Some people are truely gross!

I buy my clothes online, when they come from the factory in their little sealed baggies I'm not too worried about stains, bacteria, etc. I'm not terribly worried about chemicals.
I AM worried about bedbugs. I'm not going to lie. I throw everything in the dryer on high, then I wash it and dry it again. I'm in the bedbug panic. So far, I haven't heard of massive bedbug attacks in indiana or kentucky, but they have made it to ohio so its only a matter of time. My neighbor just threw out a bed and a ridiculous amount of boxes and all I can think is *oh my god she has bedbugs! seal the fortress!*

Toni "As for the bodily fluid thing, I once had to right off a pair of white linen trousers because a lady had tried them on during that time of the month and got blood on them then placed them back on the rack (dirty cow)."
Had to do that once to a pair of jeans and to make it worse I don't think they were wearing any underwear when they tried them on, wasn't just a little bit of blood!

I wash all my son's clothes before he wears them (except the stuff the SIL's gave me because they are clean and were washed) but for me I only wash undies and clothes that smell like new clothes because that smell turns my stomach.
Is it only me that thinks that article may be exagerating a little because surely if this were the case all people who worked with clothes in stores and factories would have a higher risk of cancer. I have worked in a clothes store and have many friends who have as well and in my humble opinion the workers are no more suseptible to cancer than the rest of society.

I'm a bad mommy and usually don't wash things new. Except my husbands new clothes b/c he say's he can't stand the smell of new clothes and won't wear them until I do. But for sure now I will start to wash them, can't be too safe!
Jenny, I AM SO JEALOUS! Love your new washer. Need to convince my husband to buy me a new one for Christmas, but hard to convince someone that never does laundry that we need a new laundry machine ;D

I found this article about why formaldehyde is in clothes and what it does.
http://www.outreach.canterbury.ac.nz/pod...
Evidently washing doesn't make it come out completely. I'm lazy and the only thing I wash before wearing is underwear. Still not scared though because we don't know the levels of it in the clothes. Lower levels aren't toxic. I guess we should all just avoid buying clothes from Eastern Europe and China.

YES,YES,YES! My husband doesn't get it, and had a big sulk when I shouted at him for taking a romper straight out of the pack to dress our son when he was 3months old. Yuck!

I usually do, so they smell good. Formaldehyde is an added incentive!
That washer is nice! Jealous! It takes me days to do our laundry because our washer and dryer (came with the house, they're in the kitchen) are so small, and you have to run things through the dryer at least 2-3 times before they're dry. I have a nice big washer downstairs, with a bigger dryer too- but we don't have electricity in our basement so they aren't hooked up :(

ever since i was very little my mother reminded me of the importance of washing new clothes, especially underwear, before wearing them because (this seriously is what she would tell me) "an unbathed indonesian probably danced around in it before packaging it and nothing is worse than indonesian crabs."
i guess indonesian crabs aren't the only thing to worry about hahah yuck

Outerwear, no. Jeans? Not always. If I'm buying something in an emergency because I've ripped or stained my existing outfit, then obviously not.
Everything else? Yup. I wash it.
Especially after this one time when I opened up a sealed package of new dishcloths, and a Chinese cigarette butt fell out when I unfolded one.
