When a dog is on commercial food, they don't chew properly, they choke on the bone. Its like feeding a baby, you dont just toss it to them and watch them inhale it, you sit with them when they are eating it, and give them larger bones so they don't choke, once they learn how to chew properly from practice with bigger bones, the smaller ones wont be so hazardous.

I wasn't trying to argue. Just telling my own experiences with it as well. Mine don't get rib bones either. It's generally the leg bones, cut into smaller pieces and then frozen so the marrow stays fresh longer. It's the same butcher/farmer we get our organic meat from.

Julianne - posted on 01/12/2011

bones are great in helping dogs teeth. Bone that is cooked is bad because it loses its natural density and causes it to splinter, when it is raw it is not hazardous. The marrow is extremely beneficial, "fake bones" that you can get for dogs have marrow as an ingredient to help keep their teeth healthy.

just telling my many experiences of taking raw/cooked bones out of animals. Chicken and rib bones are the worst.

@ julianne, yes onions too...but that is more of a cat thing....but not good for dogs either.

Marina,

Not all vets agree about the bones issue. The only one I've heard of consistently is no cooked bones. They are the ones that tend to shatter easily and cause the issues you spoke of. Chicken bones as well for the same reason.

I've never had mine (or others) say not to feed mine the bones we get from the butcher.

PS, yes other dog foods that I mentioned are a bit more expensive, but in the long run will be probably about the same. The cheaper dog foods use less good ingredients and more fillers....they usually eat more of it. The more expensive brands tend to use better ingredients...therefore need less...especially when you start measuring it out! If he is 114 and he needs to be 75, feed him the amount on the side of the bag for a 75lbs dog!

LOL @ Mary...

Ok Kati, there are several dry dog foods out there that are better than others...Purina Fit n Trim..ok not great..but NOT the worst. I would rather he ate directly out of the garbage if you told me he was eating Ol" Roy lol. You really need to find a light food that is appropriate for his age. He is 8 so that is "geriatric" and he is currently getting WAY to many calories etc from the food you are currently feeding him,...nurtitional needs vary with age.

Spme of the few I would recommend would be Royal Canin (great food can get from Petco) (get light, or indoor pet status on all these brands...I think Scince Diet labels it "indoor mature neutured) Science Diet, Blue...Hills (but that is from the vet) As fare as the gas goes, I am guessing he is eating something from the kids he shouldn't...his digestive system doesn't like it...but hey I am gassy from good food!

Try to limit the table scraps...here are vet approved "people" food:
~canned green beans NO SODIUM
~carrots straight from the bag...fresh in other words
~shredded wheat~ NO FROSTING NO SALT~ the stuff we humans don't like...LOL
I think bananas are ok but NO GRAPES~NO RAISINS~ NO CHOCOLATE~NO BONES...
Bones people think are a special treat, and can land your dog in exploritory surgery FAST! Shreds from the bone and puncture through the stomach and intestines, swallowed bones can get lodge in the stomach when trying to get into the digestive track, or get lodge in the intestines...either way just PLEASE don'e give dog bones...I have been in WAY to many emergency surgery after hours for this!

I know it is hard to control what the kids drop on the floor, but maybe time to lock dog away during food time??? Cheerios are ok IMO too! Try another lid on the trash..labs are bad asses when it comes to scrounging.

If you are interested in making your own dog food, definately ask your vet for approved food to make...they will have the best recommendations for this, especially considering his age and size.

If you do switch dog foods, remember to do it over 7-10 day period...otherwise they can get gastrointestinal upset IE vomitting, diahreah, more gas, lethargy..and all around not feeling good. Start by mixing 1/2 old food with 1/2 new food and slowly take out the old food day by day. I don't know if you are measuring the food, but that is a must! Some people with say "I give him a cupful 2x perday" when infact the "cup" they are using is more like 2-3 cups. Dogs of his size should atleast eat 2x per day...3x is often better for the "dieting" dog. I hope I gave some helpful advice.

If the gas is accompanied by vomitting, diareah, lethargy, call your vet! I hope I gave some sound advice!

ok marina, he is 9 years old on the 22nd of this month. right now he's on purina fit and trim. no we don't give him table scraps, every now and then if we have t-bones he'll get the bone, but that's like once a year, we aren't fond of t-bones like we used to be lol! he is the scroungiest dog ever. he gets into garbage all the time, he'll eat whatever is on the floor (with 3 kids, that's alot). yes he is overweight. he weighs about 114 lbs. he's a black lab, golden retreiver mix. i'm willing to consider making his food if it saves me ALOT of money. :)

So I figure- a 75lb dog needs about 2% of his body weight in raw meaty bones and organs per day. That's 1.5lb each day in food.

Your average chicken from the supermarket contains the organs and will run you about $6.50- for thirty days you're looking at about $50 in dog food.

Our dogs get Horizon Legacy dog food. It is slightly more expensive but they do eat less, as Julianne pointed out. It's also local, so may be why it's cheaper for me than it would be for other places. (I checked prices in the states and it's a good $30 more! =S) It works well for them though. They get real bones and pigs ears to chew on and eat carrots for snacks. Once in awhile they'll get a dog "treat" that's from the box store stuff but they generally turn their nose up them and hide them if they do take them. So we stopped buying them altogether.

Our cats eat Horizon Legacy for cats. No issues with them either, other than their persistent superior attitude and chasing the dogs. /:) Our one cat, really does not like Hooch all that much. I caught her trying to dive bomb him from the couch earlier. He wasn't even doing anything! Just walking around the house. LOL She's gotten cranky though since we got him, she does not like new additions. She'll come around, eventually.

Kati, I don't have time to read through all this...especially when I saw more bickering. I have a couple of questions for you, 1st, how old is your dog? 2nd What food is he on right now? 3rd does he get any tablescraps at all? 4th does he scrounge in the yard at all? 5th is he overweight right now? 6th, how much effort do you want to put in...ie making own food? I I know you probably have answered these things...but I just saw what was going on and really don't have the patience to read through it.

In addition to that, you don't have to deal with obesity, diabetes, allergies, dental problems, systemic heart infections due to poor oral health, kidney disease, bowel disease, joint problems....think of the money involved with today's average pet's health care. I see so many commercial fed animals and they're all suffering from the same problems.

Julianne - posted on 01/12/2011

Yea, raw food is much more economical. Since they eat way less when they eat food that is high nutrition. Same with the mainly meat bag foods, it seems like your spending more, but it lasts longer so your not spending that much more.

the blue buffalo is completely grain free. i went scrounging around looking for it. it's hella spensive though. i'm terrified at spending that much money on my animal. i'll have to talk to hubby about that. it freaks me out to think of departing with that much moeny.

Julianne - posted on 01/12/2011

kati, if i were to feed my animals bag food, it would be holistic food which is made of mainly meat. If the food has grain on the ingredients list, DONT feed it to them, it will cause them to overeat because of lack of nutritional value, leading to a stinky, obese animal. Its more expensive for holistic food, but they dont eat as much so you basically spend the same on food. I just recently switched her to raw food and its a lot cheaper then the holistic food.

They are whole. Rodent pro kills them with CO2 from dry ice.

But it's one's comfort level. The way I see it, my cats are pure carnivores, not much removed from their ancestor, the African wild cat...so I try to feed them as close to a natural diet as possible. Some who choose to feed raw basically try to re-create a prey animal with store-bought meat products. I believe that whole prey is healthiest, but you do what you have to.

The bugs are fed live though...sucks to be them, but the cats prefer it that way :).

Minnie - posted on 01/12/2011

This is where I get my chicks and mice:

www.rodentpro.com

I also buy whole chickens from the store and cut them into 2 oz portions including the organs for the cats. They get beef from the store, we buy crickets or during the summer the animals get loads of bugs we catch outdoors.

We're planning on raising rabbits soon, but you can order these as well. If I had dogs I would just feed larger portions.

For two eight pound cats we spend about $40 a month on food. About $5 for the cichlid.

BARF dogs are dying, Sharon, because they're fed ground slop with additives. They get dental caries and gingivitis which leads to systemic infections. A large deep chested dog fed a diet like this IS at risk for bowel torsion.

Dogs fed an appropriate prey-model diet are not dying. There is an extensive prey-model diet list on Yahoo, and I assure you that those dogs are the epitome of health.

Now, I don't have dogs, I have cats, but I'll be damned if I serve them up overly processed IAMS or Purina or Wysong or whatever the heck manufacturers are sticking on the shelves these days. They eat raw whole chicks, insects, beef and organs and mice. They don't stink a bit and have pristine teeth. They most definitely aren't dying.

My fish doesn't even eat a commercial diet. He and the cats were proof that what goes in come out. My fish made loads of red foul poos while on the pellet cichlid diet and when I switched him to insects and vegetables I rarely see a poo in the tank. The cats make small non-smelly poos, as opposed to the whopping wet stink bombs other people's cats leave in the boxes.

My dog has eaten Pedigree healthy choice for most her 8 years. She also eats our meat scraps. My vet has said over and over that she will eat what her body needs, and to provide a balanced diet for her.
Hey Kate, what do you think?
My dog loves fruit, not berries, but most other fruit.
She loves veggies, including lettuce.
She thinks baby carrots are treats.
But she goes nutty for meat... venison is her favourite meat.
She also loves rice.
She dislikes anything processed or fried though. (which I wouldn't give her, but the kids have tried)
She's a lab/boxer mix and is healthy and happy.

When I had Buddy (a newfoundland) he ate Origen.. It was one of the best foods I could get in the area, cost a lot but totally worth it! Before that he was on Canidae grain free (before they changed the formula and made it nasty for so many dogs...) One thing I liked about Orijen was that it's fit for human consumption (they use human grade ingredients) which I figured would at least be helpful if there was some sort of natural disaster we could eat it (just kidding - ew).

I have a LOT of hippie friends out here. They're all into that RAW and BARF diet shit. Their dogs smell like hell. OH DEAR GOD. I went over to help vet out and weigh some guineapigs for a show and her dogs were farting messes. I was gagging. She had to shut them out of the room, turn on a fan and open a window, and I could still smell their stink coming under the door

Now I've been to the other homes as well and their dogs stink too. Not as bad though. But omfg, its nasty.

Only two of those people are real friends with each other. I know two of them order from the same place online for their raw meats. One buys locally from various farmers. The other shops at some organic pet place up in Tucson. She's a little on the rich side.

Listen to kate.

I didn't get all the way through the various messages but dog food companies frequently change their formulas without notification causing issues for dogs.

I feed a varied diet. Our dogs main diet is IAMS. But when the high end foods go on sale or if I get a good coupon I'll mix that in.

When we first got our rescue pyrenese, she had the most rank ass farts ever. I bought Pedigree breath busters and they went away. I think it took a week and they decreased, by week two the farts were infrequent, in a month they were gone.

Ah the RAW & BARF fed dogs are dying. Most of them are not vaccinated. They're being struck down by bizarre diseases I've never heard of before. Oh and two of them got bowel torsion? one is a medium sized dog and the other is a VERY large dog.

I've got 3 VERY large dogs, never had that happen.

Anyway - I'm with Kate. people who do extremes - get extreme reactions, like dying dogs.
