I'm studying english, and want to teach high school english. I feel everyone has some sort of gramatical pet peeve. What's yours (if you even have one)?

Mine is when people misuse Less/Fewer.. It drives me nuts! I correct my husband all the time, he thinks it's funny so he started doing it on purpose just to get my knickers in a knot. I shut him down really fast when I pointed out the kids will pick up on that bad habit, and I don't want them to sounds like idiots.

Serisouly, i've ever heard it misused in comercials and the news! *rips hair out*

My daughter has been at school for 7 weeks now and I think I'm going to explode! She's started to copy the way some of her friends talk and it's driving me around the bend. Innit, nah, yep, dornt wanna, teef, gewl....The list goes on. My pet peeve however is the phrase 'I aren't' instead of 'I'm not', most commonly used by my M.I.L who is....... a TEACHER! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. :) (for the English see: backward yorkshire tw@t!) no offence, I call my hubby that too!

Have any of you read "Eats,Shoots and Leaves" by Lynne Truss? It's a humorous look at incorrect punctuation. I think all of you would enjoy it.

Oh wow, I see that now. I think my eyes just skim right past and. I could probably mistakenly insert multiple ands, tos, thes, or ifs in a sentence and never notice. My own peculiar form of dyslexia. I noticed the 'correct' instead of 'corrected' immediately.

...so now that we're all finished dissecting Sara's post...

See, ... is so much better than -.

I already explained the typo I saw in Sara's post - how did you NOT see it? What other typo is there? I've stared at it for 20 minutes - it's driving me nuts.

Let's disect it....

Sara typed, "In another community and mom titled her thread, "Lactose and Tolerant." She was correct by one of our fellow debaters, then she changed the title to "Lactose and Intolerant." Sigh."

I noticed that the 4th word in is "and" but it should have been an "a".

I have a LOT, but spelling 'grammatical' as 'gramatical' is one of them. So are capitalizing improper nouns, misusing ellipses, not using proper pluralization, and misspelling simple words.

My favourite is people trying pronounce somebody's name and you come out with some of the craziest sounds. Here in SA we hear this quite often especially when its a famous Actor or Actress that was born in SA then you get everyone correcting the TV at the same time Theron is the most popular. You pronounce it Ther-ron and Actually it's pronounced as Te-ron and don't even try some of the the African names that gets even funnier. Try Hlongwane on for size. I had to laugh at my receptionist who mispronounced Xavier and pronounced with a clicking sound because X is pronouced that way in Xhosa. Ahh the fun of living in a country with 11 official languages.

I'm in BC, Canada and somedays I use "color" and other days I use "colour" - just depends on my mood. That's how I roll.

But, yes Jenn, you're right - typically Canada adopts British spelling.

Jenn - posted on 11/01/2010

I think the Americans are the only ones to spell things differently such as colour, neighbour, etc. We spell them properly in Canada as well and it drives me batty when I'm typing and the darn Americanized spell-checker tells me that a word is spelled incorrectly when it in fact is NOT!

melk doesn't annoy me just because it's also the dutch word for milk and my family in Canada/US is dutch (and now I live in NL). My best friend growing up used to say that all the time, and her family is dutch too. Go figure.

Oh the UK vs US spellings really annoy me, it always looks as if I am spelling words wrong, but I am not, I spell them UK version as I am British :-)

Christina had to have a little bit of a giggle myself, about the Milk/Melk you would go absolutely mad here in SA Melk is the Afrikaans word for milk. So we hear this mix of languages quite often. It can get quite hair raising if you aren't listening carefully enough and you miss something or misinterpret it.

One of our most common terms is JA, Well, No, Fine, which can mean just about anything normally when something has you gob smacked. Or Ja, Nee which is a positive and negative meaning yes no. Its the same with spelling in different parts of the world. ie in the Sates its Color, in UK, Australia and SA its Colour.

just thought I would add this perspective for interest sake.

I did a bit research and whilst I agree wrong should have been wrongly. Different shouldn't have been differently because when a comparative adverb is used you don't add the ly - completely different, more beautiful etc. It's very easy to slip-up on some grammar without even reaslising it! Probably because I speak differently to how I write.

Kathy - posted on 10/31/2010

Now we're going to get into an argument (oops debate!) about which sources are best.
I was always taught that an adverb modifies a verb - in this case the verb "spell." An adverb has thre suffix -ly.But it's not worth getting uptight about!

Jennifer - posted on 10/31/2010

"Completely differently" sounds a bit wierd lol! I checked on Microsoft Word and according to the grammar check both what I wrote or with the "ly"s on the end are grammatically correct.

Let's just agree they can't spell! Just joking guys!

What about adverbs - shouldn't it be "differently" and "wrongly?"

The one that really gets my goat is mixing up borrow and lend! Even my sister who's a qualified geography teacher does it from time to time. Also It really bugs me that Americans spell completely different from proper English - like airplane is aeroplane here, and color is colour here =]

You spelt grammatical wrong though...unless that's how you spell it in America lol?!?
