Laura, I agree with your doctor, BUT if an ear infection is severe, antibiotics are needed. I would say that IF you suspect an ear infecction, you should always get it checked by a doctor to determine the severity anyway. To me, it isn't something we should just assume is mild because there are minimal symptoms. Only once a doctor has determined the severity should we decide whether to reject antibiotics or not.

I'm not a fan of *trying things out* on ear infections, but that's because my son had 3 burst eardrums as a result of ear infections I didn't even know he had, and ended up with permanent damage - his eardrum didn't heal and he had to have surgery to reconstruct it. He has permanent mild hearing damage as a result.

However, I will say, that if he is continuing to have issues, keep in mind that antibiotics kill ALL the bugs in the system, not just the bad one, so it does actually lower the immune system. So when you or your children are taking antibiotics, you should also be on pro-biotics. It is possible this is the reason he keeps getting the infection?

Kati, we are going through the exact same thing. Our 4 year old started school this year and every 3-5 weeks or so he is getting sick and then so is his 2.5 year old brother. My husband has even been sick 3 or 4 times since September and he is usually only sick once a year. It is terrible this year.
Both my kids have been sick for the past 10 days. It just doesn't want to leave.

Oh, yeah, once they start kindergarten.....about two years of them getting sick more often I think. Taylah kept coming down with all sorts of stuff the last couple of years.....and then EVERYONE gets sick. But I have found that with the probiotics, she seems to pick up much quicker.

thanks everybody!! i took him to the doctor and talked with him about the whole antibiotic thing, and he was very empathetic with my concerns, and he agrees with them to an extent. however vincents ear infection was horrendous, and he didn't want to see it get worse. he also has a little one in the other ear, that he said he wouldn't treat with antibiotics, and let it heal itself. but since the one in the other ear was so bad, he felt antibiotics were the best course of treatment.
and jodi, i did start giving him pro-biotics probably about 4-5 days ago because i'm tired of him being so sick this year, and they have seemed to help me (although, i am coming down with something again, sigh). i swear this year with him starting kindergarten has been horrid for us and sickness. every couple of weeks he gets sick brings it home and then everyone else gets it. its the neverending cycle!!
i will have to try the suggestions given here to help with the pain.:)

Yeah, he said it was bright red, but not bulging or oozing. So I guess that visual picture along with Eric not being in pain made him comfortable letting it heal on it's own, unless Eric started saying it hurt.
My friends daughter just had her eardrum burst, now that sounds scary! I had no idea that was possible, but from what I hear, she isn't even slowing down cuz of it! She is a rough and tough 2 year old.

Brown onion , one drop of it's juice squeezed into the ear or you can take the very core out and just put it in the ear .

Eric had an ear infection, but the dr said it wasn't extreme enough to need antibiotics, and since Eric wasn't acting in pain the dr advised me to just let it heal itself. We had no medicine, and it was gone a week later when we went back to the dr. He said antibiotics can really damage the immune system and should be a last resort.

We never microwaved it but yeah i used to get ear infections all the time and the onion would clear it. I can even remember the crackling sound in my ears of the infection breaking down.

my mum used to cut an onion in half and microwave it and then we held it up to our ears for a bit.

I use warm olive oil drops, and breast milk! (not mixed together lol)
I get ear infections almost every time I get a cold, and they both work great. I used breast milk to cure my pink eye once :P

For my sons last ear infection we weren't given antibiotics but some ear drops which worked like a charm.

When I posted a thread about ear infections not too long ago, Julianne suggested drops of olive oil or mineral oil in the ears. Obviously it won't cure the ear infections, but it helps with wax build up.
I believe antibiotics are the only thing that can make a current ear infection better (or at least this is what I have heard). If you wait too long or do nothing about it, it could cause permanent damage to the ear drum.

I haven't heard that breastmilk can cure ear infections, but I have heard that breast feeding can help to prevent them.

* Two-three drops of warm onion juice placed in each ear
* One-two drops of warm olive oil in each ear
* A cup of salt or a cup of rice placed in a large sock, warmed (not hot!) in a microwave oven and placed on the outside of the child’s ear for 10 minutes
* Several drops of hydrogen peroxide in each ear for 10 minutes
* A warm, never hot, compress or hot water bottle applied to the affected ear for 10 minutes
* Elevating the child’s mattress to help with drainage – place something under the mattress to elevate; do not use pillows under the child’s head
* Giving the child water to sip and swallow, which may help open the eustachian tube
* Placing several drops of breast milk in the affected ear every four hours (breastfed babies also experience fewer ear infections than bottle-fed babies)

I am going to have to remember this for my girls!!!!!

You don't drink it to cure the ear infection, you squirt it in the ear, breastmilk also can cure pink eye and other minor cuts infections.
It's the living cells that do it so well.

I'm with Sal here, sore throats, colds and flu etc I am all for alternative medicine but ear infections are painful and there can be complications. I would talk to your doctor about your concerns and see what they have to say.

while i get not wanting to go for antibiotics for every little thing ear infections can be pretty nasty and can lead to perm damage so i would go with the drs advice, also it is important for the dr to know how many your little one has incase they need gromits or something in the future, my son and daughters both had loads until 12 months and then nothing since (touch wood) until my son got a really bad one at 13 and thats when i had to go to the ent specialist and was told how damaging they could be, and i wouldn;t put anything in it as the old wives tale goes the only thing you put in your ear is your elbow...

Not sure if breastmilk can cure infections ... I know breastfed babies are less susceptible to ear infections than FF babies.

Not sure if that would work on a 6 year old.

Kati - you could also try a warm (not hot) hairdryer blowing in his ear to help loosen any wax.

I heard that breastmilk can cure an ear infection!
Idk if you are currently lactating or not, but I've heard it's pretty effective :)

[deleted account]

I don't know about ear infections.

If there is a painful waxy build up, you could try warming a little olive oil and putting a few drops in his ear.
