Before I had kids and I wondered what my baby would look like I asked my sister, who had a very ugly baby (but is now a drop dead gorgeous pre-teen) if she knew her daughter was ugly when she was born, or if she was just so in love with her that she didn't notice. She told me you definitely notice lol. But you just don't care bc they are yours. My daughter came out cute as can be, but my poor son took some time to, as they say, grow into his looks lol.

yes, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. my eyes told me yep. I would never tell anyone. I was lucky to only have 1 out of 5 of my children to be ugly. He outgrew it.. but whew..
conehead like no one business ( he was in the birth canal for more than 10 hours) I was young and thought it would stay that way so i cried and rubbed his head and told him we would buy lots of hats, The nurse laughed so hard and told me it will go down.
on top of all that he had huge ears. Bald, then he had the nerve to be jaundice which only added to the overall look. Mind you I loved my ugly baby to death. But i knew not to enter him into a beauty contest.

I actually think babies that are born vaginally look like aliens. I don't mean that in an offensive way its just that when theyre born vaginally they have a slight cone shape to their heads so it makes them look like aliens. :P
Not that they look ugly they just look...funny if you will.

So funny to run across this tonight! My daughter and I were just talking about this at dinner. We were talking about her nephew. He is a total heart breaker now. Age 4 But, his whole family agreed he was an ugly baby. Yes, ugly.
I think it takes a couple of days for babies' color to even out and their heads to take on their regular shape. So I think they all look a little better after a couple of days.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and babies are innocent gifts from God.
So although it is really kind of pathetic to judge a baby's looks, I guarantee the large majority of people do it behind closed doors. I've done it but I would also be the first one to kick your ass if you said my baby was ugly. That obviously makes me a hypocrite in this case but I'm not going to lie about it or pretend I'm all self righteous.

I would say yes. HOWEVER, how much of it is our cultural influence of what babies are *supposed* to look like? Just like the images of women, we are told that babies are supposed to be certain things. So are we judging with a media bias or evolutionary preferences for attraction?

We like to call them unfortunate looking :)
Yes, there is definitely babies and kids with features that don't appeal to everyone. But odds are that each child does look adorable to someone!
So, sure, I see babies I think aren't cute, but I'm sure that others look at the same child and think it's cute.
But some kids are cute to a wider spectrum of people, and some are only cute to a few :)

Mine had a flat spot on the back of his head, on the right side. I kept trying to turn his head when he was laying down but he would always go back to his comfy position when he'd sleep, it persisted after he was mobile, he still slept that way.
it went away completely when he was about 7 months old. I was afraid I was gonna have to get him one of those head shaping helmets :x
Fortunately, it was a pretty small spot, not the whole back of his head or I REALLY would have been freaking out. He was just a little bit lopsided :)

I was told never to put a baby on his tummy and to never let him sleep with me, so that's how his head got that way. He almost needed special head gear to reverse the problem (except they don't do it once the child is 18 months). It's sad that bad advice from doctors can lead to potentially lifelong problems!

When I first got a good look at my son, I almost cried. He had the most hideous red birthmark on his nose and it was not little. It took up his whole nose...I called him my Rudolph baby!! Now he is adorable and handsome! I can't believe it's the same baby...lol.
@ Lisa...my son had the shaped head you were talking about. He was not a car seat/swing/ rocker baby...but I did put him to sleep on his back everyday/night. He wasn't able to roll over until 7 months old, so he didn't get an early chance to get rid of that funny shaped head. Now that he moves around as much as a fish out of water, his head is back to normal! :)

yup! my cousins baby looked like a garden gnome for the first six months... of course i couldn't tell her that. but now she is such a gorgeous little 4-yr-old!!!! And i've seen some really "unique" looking babies out and about in the mall or while i was grocery shopping. I never tell the mom that their kid looks funnny, though, because they obviously love their child no matter what and i don't want to be rude,.
oh and yes i think that pretty much all kids go thru that awkward looking stage!! lol i know i was an ugly kid as least when i look back on pics i was extrememly skinny had big glasses and then when my teeth were falling out haha i really wasnt the cutest kid on the block but i like to say that i had a great personality that made up for what i lacked in looks and now that im older i think that every year i get a lil more gettin looking haha so even tho i didnt have looks then i really like to think that i have them now i swear i used to think that i would have to go to prom with my cousin!!! lol luckily that didnt happen. but yea i think there are kids that are "ugly" too.
LOL this is kind of funny yes i do think their are babies that are "ugly" but for the most part to me all babies are beautiful because its not like they can help how they were made and in the end they are all so precious. However i think most of the times when babies are born they dont look their best cuz they either have cone heads or are extremely swollen haha but of course when they are first put into our arms we think they are the most beautiful creatures on earth!! I personally think my baby is beautiful of course! lol and when she was born i thought the same thing but she was swollen i mean her lips were like angelina jolie's lips! lol and she was a bit splotchy at first haha but now she is flawless :D but i have seen another baby where he had a long skinny neck and round head and kinda looked like a newborn bird or something but then i felt so bad for thinking that baby was ugly!! Cuz in the end babies are always perfect to their parents and if someone told me my baby was ugly id seriously kicked their ass right then and there!! and it would be so crazy to hear someone say that to someone else about their baby!! haha i hope people really dont do that!! lol Oh and HOTDOG lady i saw your pic of your baby he was so cute!! he was a chunkers lol

I thought Cole was cuter as a newborn than Zach was. Does that make me a horrible mother?
I remember this one little girl I had in Sunday school many years ago. She was 1. When she first started in my class, I thought "Yikes!" It didn't help that she screamed like you were killing her. But after awhile, when she calmed down, her personality was so cute that she grew on me and started looking cute to me.

LOL yall are funny! There has been times where I just stare at a kid trying to find something cute about them and I cant help but feel sorry for the poor kid. Some kids ugly based on how dirty their clothes are and how messy they look..but I have seen some OMG beautiful kids and they just absolutely shine!
Sharon - posted on 02/02/2011
There are very few kids so ugly you do a "WTF was that?"
At my store there was a baby/toddler who looked like someone pushed her face in from her nose. It was extreme and had to be some sort of deformity. I found myself staring at her, not because she was so ugly - to me she wasn't - it was sad - but I wondered, how do they fix that? Can they fix that? What caused that? What is that?
And then there was the kid who looked like something out of the "hills have eyes" decades of inbreeding.. omg.. honestly, I wondered that his mother had the guts to take him out in public.
Both of my babies looked like Monchichis at birth! They were beautiful bc they're mine and I love them but yeah they weren't the cutest newborns! After a few days they were gorgeous, though. They were just really swollen and smashed when they came out.

Yah ... most are cute and we are wired to think so, but some ... yah, not so cute. I was in a waiting room with a toddler one day. Another mother was there with her same aged toddler and wow was this kid ... well, ugly. He was square - really - cubed shaped head, no hair, cubed shaped body ... tiny tiny eyes ... will make a great bouncer some day, but anyway, even the toddler I was with noticed him. She looked at his mother and asked, "Can I pet it?"
The mother just picked up her future bouncer and left in a huff. I didn't even try to make it right. I was not sure what to say.
yes there are ugly babies, but ugly babies in a way are still cute, maybe its their size. ugly kids arent cute though. but then again the only kids i have ever thought are ugly are really naughty kids at my sons kindy, so i think that might come into it too. haha =p lucky my kids are gorgeous!!

All babies are sweet and precious, but no, not all of them are cute. Some babies are just damn funny-looking. Usually, though, they tend to grow into their features and wind up looking perfectly fine once they reach toddlerhood.
Sam was kind of ridiculously cute for a newborn. He never had that "squashy tomato", misshapen look that a lot of newborns have. A lot of people thought I had a c-section, because he just didn't look scrunched-up at all.

YES! I have seen some "OMG Don't show me that unless you want me to laugh/spit up/vomit/cry in pity for the poor child. Is that really a human baby? I've seen monkeys with less fur (looking at a toddler).
yes they exist.

I love babies...but I definately think newborns are kind of fugly. Once they start looking like babies and less like alien-monkeys...then they're cute. This applies to my own children! lmbo
Yes, there are some less than fortunate looking children out there, but I also think that all babies and children are beautiful in their own right!
Sherri - posted on 02/02/2011
Hell ya there are some pretty ugly children out there. My middle son looked like a damn alien when he was born. I thought he was so ugly I wouldn't take him in public for the first few weeks. Within a couple of weeks he turned into a heartbreaker but boy for a little while there yikes!!

I understand that babies are not going to look all that cute coming out the V-JJ, its understandable that they are swollen, and bruised….but when that swelling goes down…..that’s when you should make the judge if they are seriously cute….or not.
ALL babies are cute in that they are little and have that baby smell…but at far as appearance goes…NOT all babies are handsome/pretty/cute

When I was pregnant, I was so afraid that I was going to have one of those babies that people would have to lie about :) If she was ugly, I wouldn't know it, of course. But she came out and was BEAUTIFUL!
But I've seen some lie-worthy babies in my time :)
most babies tend to look the same to me. but i will say i'm glad my baby didn't look nearly as alien-like as the baby on the ad for "one born every minute." my baby came out with fair skin, big alert eyes, and a head full of hair. i got pictures to prove it. but she's not too photogenic and is always making faces for the camera now xD

I've seen horrendously ugly babies. I've seen some amazingly beautiful babies. But for the most part they're all about the same, sort of cute but sort of funny looking.
When they're kids you see a bigger difference. Plenty of ugly kids, plenty of cute kids, and still a bunch of average kids. Until they all hit their "awkward stage" and they ALL look funny.

Yes! One of my girls was very hairy and had hair on her face when she was born - she looked like a monkey baby! LOL!! Of course I still loved her no matter what and once the hair fell off and she grew a bit more (she was only 5lbs when we left the hospital), she was adorable.

On a related note- I can tell a baby who spends his or her day lying around in carseats/swings/bouncers a mile a way from how flat the back of the head is. I cannot -stand- seeing a baby whose head is higher than it is long.
