How often are your kids allowed treats?

Do they get a treat(biscuits/cake/fizzy drinks, etc)once a day, once a week,a month, just at the weekend or NEVER?Just at birthday parties/trips to the cinema, etc??How would your child react at the supermarket if you said"pick out an apple or a pear for yourself!" Personally,I try my very best to minimise the ammount of sugary treats(when possible) my daughter gets......so for example she can have popcorn! Obviously at friends birthday parties/cinema etc,she is allowed to join in with the rest of the kids(I don't believe in being too tough).Let me know how you feel.........

My 19 month old gets a treat every day. A lot of times his "treat" is fruit but I think that part of being a child is enjoying the "sweet" stuff in life lol If I'm having ice cream, he gets some of mine. On occasion, I have let him take a sip from my soda. Once in a blue moon I put chocolate syrup in his milk. He's so good about eating the healthy stuff that I feel like it's ok to indulge him now and then. He was born in October and when Thanksgiving rolled around he was 6 weeks old. I make the best key lime pie on the planet (in my not so humble opinion lol) and he got a little bit (a dab on my finger). Oooohhh, what a horrible mother I am! Giving an infant a taste of something sweet! LOL Like someone else said, everything in moderation. I don't give him sweet stuff every day. Maybe a few times a week. And we hardly eat fast food at all. My husband and I, even before I got pregnant, would rather cook at home on the grill than go to a drive thru. That being said though, once every few months we will go to Wendy's. Usually those are the nights when my kitchen is spotless and I really REALLY don't want to dirty it up by cooking lol

My sons school has an healthy eating policy. No fizzy drinks in lunchboxes and no snacks to be brought for breaktimes. Instead they provide fruit or veg snacks for morning and afternoon breaks. It's good to know they can't trade for junk behind our backs.

I would say one every 2 or 3 days. I try to get mine eating healthy at meal times and having fruit and salad as snacks, but if an ice-cream van comes round the corner or someone offers him a treat I will let him have them. My husband is always trying to give him treats so I have to be bossy or they would both live on junk.

for mine whenever we buy them we're trying to get her to gain weight :) so chocolate bars, chips, chicken nuggets, cream cheese, butter, cheese we dont hesitate to put the fattening stuff in everything and give it to her as much as we can. she still loves her fruits and vegies though

my boys LOVE fruit! They don't often get cookies or candy but they do get nutragrain bars for snacks. I am not too terribly strict about it because I do think that kids should get to enjoy being kids, but you know, all in moderation. They only get juice in the mornings simply because I don't want them to deal with the runs or whatever, but I do let my oldest have a cup of chocolate milk. I keep his teeth clean and let him enjoy himself. For the most part, however, it is just fruit. This works out great, because he likes it best anyway.

Well my kids would happily pick out a pear, apple, orange, banana.. heck even carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, or beans. =) I've raised mine with healthy eating habits and lead them through example. I've battled with weight loss though since having kids. My last two particularly. I was just back to my normal weight when I got pregnant again, so the cycle has started again. LOL! Gotta love what pregnancy does to us. =(
As for junk food, they get it once every 2-3 days. Even then though they don't always finish it. At birthday parties it's a different story, I can't control what they do in another home but I'm not bothered by it. I won't be a food nazi to my kids but I don't have to be either. =) Our daughter's last birthday party though was cute. We set up our water slide and bouncy house. The kids played in our yard for an entire afternoon. They got a tray of fruit to eat, a tray with cheese and crackers and a tray with meat. They all loved it. I had to make more trays since they ate them so fast! For the last 2 hours they came inside so our daughter could open her presents, they got cake and watched a movie until their parents showed up. They all had fun and didn't get the usual load of junk food. =)

I was a heavy kid and still battle with my weight so my reasoning is very personal. My kiddos get treats every once and a while. No soda except maybe on the weekends, if they ask for a snack they usually get fruit or cheese sticks. I'm not stingy with food but I want them to want the good stuff. Life as a heavy kid sucked ad I don't want that for my kids. So I keep them acitve and eating decent, not great but decent. Oh, they still get their splurge times, Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and birthdays.

I admit that my son probably snacks on more junky stuff that have more sugar than fat. Not really much in the way of candy bars, but more cookies or ice cream. He also loves gummy worms too. Plain popcorn is actually quite good and we have that a lot here. We do not drink any soda/pop/fizzy stuff in our home. Lots of water and watered down juice. Now that it's the summer and fresh fruit is so yummy, I'm offering that a lot more!

We never go to McDonalds. Pizza Hut sometimes, but even then the kids have pasta and a salad!
I don't like it when i hear mum's in the playground promising McDonalds practically every day! :)

Hi Catherine....I know its scary what goes on,and with all the health warnings/dental warnings being shoved down our throats lately from t.v/newspapers/radio/billboards.....you'd think people would listen......no they're having a drive-thru mcdonald's instead I'd say... they wouldn't even walk to get it!Such a shame.....

I always let my son have a small funsize bar of chocolate when he finishes school. He's a good eater and eats almost anything. I feel that as long as his diet is generally 75-90 % good and nutrious, a little bit of sugar won't hurt. There are mothers who give their kids junk and sugary food and treats as part of their main diet. One example I have is a mother who used to give her children bowls of sweets for a bedtime snack .... who, with braincells, thinks loading a kid up on sugar before bed is a good idea?

Well i'm guilty of being a bit rubbish at moderating the amount of sweets and chocolate my kids get! Mainly because my husband is forever snacking on biscuits and stuff!

I don't allow fizzy drinks tho, and although i do give them treats, it's only if they've eaten all their dinner first etc!

Someone i know doesn't allow their kids ANY nice stuff, no juice, no chocolate, except on special occasions, when they finally do get some they go NUTS!!!

all in moderation i think! :)
