Katy Perry not on Sesame Street

"Sesame Street" started previewing its 41st season on the Web this week, releasing teaser clips featuring stars like Jude Law, Will.i.am, Colin Farrell, and Run-DMC's Reverend Run. One of the shorts, however, got a lot more attention than the rest: a two-and-a-half minute video of pop star Katy Perry singing a reworked version of her 2008 hit "Hot N Cold" with Elmo. The issue: the perception that Perry's outfit wasn't appropriate for a show geared toward children ages one to six.

After the clip hit YouTube Monday, Gawker ran a story that called attention to the video and Katy's look. Parents checking out the video began leaving critical comments like, "Couldn't she wear something that was more. oh idk. APPROPRIATE" and "I DO NOT want my five year old lookin at [that]!" But, as TMZ notes, Perry wasn't actually half-naked -- her outfit featured a flesh-colored mesh top that went all the way up to her neck, like a figure-skating costume.

Sesame Workshop, the company that produces the show, responded to the controversy this morning by announcing that producers have decided to pull the song from the broadcast version of the program. The clip will remain online at KatyPerry.com, however, so the singer's more mature fans can watch it. "'Sesame Street' has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult," reads a statement from the show. "We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or caregiver. We also value our viewers' opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we've received on the Katy Perry music video, which was released on YouTube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of 'Sesame Street,' which is aimed at preschoolers."

The original version of "Hot N Cold" depicts a less kid-friendly on-and-off romance, and includes words that wouldn't end up on network televsion, let alone a children's show. Perry cleaned up the song for "Sesame Street," singing instead about wanting to play dress-up with Elmo, who has decided to run off and play tag instead. As the singer chases the beloved puppet around a cartoon city, she sings, "You're up and you're down/You're running around/You're fast then you're slow/you stop then you go."

Perry tweeted about her visit to one of the world's most famous neighborhoods a day ago, writing: "I can totally tell you how to get to Sesame Street! I've been, Elmo & I hang out." When she taped the show back in March, Perry sent a Twitpic of herself, arm around the fuzzy red puppet, with the caption: "Sunny day today! I think I'm in lurv... Sorry @rustyrockets!!!" (Rustyrockets refers, of course, to her fiance, Russell Brand.)

Neither Perry nor her representatives have issued any statements about the video being pulled from the show.

I watched the video, and it's not that bad, but her cleavage does stand out quite a bit. She should re-do it with a more appropriate top on IMO.

Mountain out of a molehill I reckon?

I read about it (and some of the comments here) before I watched it and had I not known there was an 'issue' I wouldn't have even noticed her booby area.

Why is it not ok to teach our girls to be comfortable with their bodies, and as such wear clothes they are comfortable in? Katy did not have nipple hanging out she showed a little clevage, I'm still struggling to see what is so wrong with it and I'm sure many of us have shown similar amounts of clevage at some point in our lives (and I bet our boobs are a damn site bigger than Katy's).

Cathy, you are correct....

I didn't see what the fuss was about with this video. Had I just seen it on Sesame Street, I wouldn't have even noticed. I think there are way too many parents out there that need to remove the stick! ;-P

Oh and I've always loved Sesame Street! I watched it as a kid and my kids enjoy watching it now when they are able to!

Quoting Jo: "My niece, who is 7, wears an outfit similar while she's figure skating. Her top has a sweetheart dip (as she calls it) straight across her chest"

With all due respect, Jo.. I highly doubt your 7 year old niece has as much boobage as Katy Perry. Therefore her top probably doesn't make her ladies squish out into the netting above-- Like Katy Perry's does.

I just think it's inappropriate for a kids show. I hate Sesame Street to begin with, but I still think parents were right to get angry. Like Dana Schenk said.. Kids do see that out in public, but by putting that on a kids show, it is just like teaching them that it's Ok to dress like that- even at their age. And it shouldn't be Ok.

Me and Shia (who is 28 months) LOVED it!!
I've always had a soft spot for Sesame Street.

Seriously, I think what she was wearing was fine. It wouldn't have entered my head that it wasn't to be honest.

I think Cathy is right about Americans being a bit more prudish that us.
Dana, remember the picture of me at the fair and the topless mermaid on the side of the ride?!?! Same sort of thing! :)

I finally got my sound to work and watched the video. My kids came over and my almost 11 yr old son did not think her clothes were appropriate for a kids' show. I really disliked when her breasts were jiggling around(granted just the tops but still!!) when she was 'running'.

These balls of colour that make sounds and do dances and stuff. It's horrifying.

I LOVE Sesame Street, at least the characters talk properly unlike Teletubbies, Boobars etc.

Oh geeze.. I took offense to the whole 'lots of people on the right hate Sesame Street' comment. Granted, I did not read the part about their 'leftist agenda'. Maybe it's my crazy hormones right now, but I just found that offensive.

@Loureen, that was actually pretty offensive. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with my political views, thank you very much.

@Dana, I HATE Sesame Street b/c I think they switch back and forth between lessons too quickly, making it harder for YOUNG children to focus well enough to actually learn something. THAT is why I hate Sesame Street. I prefer to let my son watch shows that he'll actually learn something from when I cannot be there to help him (he's 2- and yes I have the TV on with him in the living room when I go to the bathroom, do laundry or cook dinner-- and as of the last month or so, lay on the couch in excruciating pain in the fetal position).

I watched an old man river video clip just before the cartoons the other morning and all the girls had only undies on and their bodies painted with very visible nipples !

OH DEAR! While the Sesame Street version of the song is shite, who cares what she is wearing? I'm sure kids never switch to the music channel. Why does Katy Perry get such a bad rap anyways, look at Cher and other such "legends" and what they wear.

I know Laura, I remember Christa saying she hates PBS cartoons, I still don't get it. :| They're the only cartoons I'll let Ethan watch! The rest promote kids being total brats. Well, Sesame Street does promote sluttiness now. Ah, what to do, what to do. :P

Like I said before Loureen, I don't see anything wrong with women walking around with cleavage, I walk around with cleavage. I would however not go on a children's show with a revealing outfit.

I really wouldn't have noticed any clevage had someone not taken the one frame where her boobs are pushed together and said "LOOK! BOOBIES!" All I have to say is Go Elmo! lol And she's playing dress up. Which to me indicates that's not something she would wear as a actual outfit(although us adults know that's not true! ;P). Believe me, if it was innapropriate, I would totally be against it, but this is just childish...for lack of a better word.

Wow, I guess I'm glad our shows don't have that then. I wouldn't want my little girl coming to me wanting to wear shit like that.
Like I said, it's no big deal anywhere else but, I think it's inappropriate on a children's show. That's not going to change. Call me a prude, I'll wear it proudly. ;)

LOL...I just read about this before coming on CoM...I thought it was cute and did not see the big deal. Parents need to losen up. They are seeing more in regular commercials than this. I like Katy Perry's rendition on this song...she looked great.

I gotta agree, Joanna, the lip syncing and acting was pretty horrible too lol

She probably got her dress up costume in the same store that lady on PD&HT was talking about seeing the "Whore" halloween costume :p

I still think there's a huge difference between what's in the newspapers and what's on adult television than what is shown on a show for children.

It was a cute video and Eliza enjoyed it. I can gaurantee that she was WAY more interested in Elmo. When it was just Katy on screen she kept asking, "Where's Elmo?"

Anyway, anyone remember the old Sesame Street? I'm sure a lot of that stuff wouldn't be aired today. Today Cookie Monster can't even eat a cookie without someone offering him an apple instead.

Elmo has better friends to play with than a blow-up-sex-doll looking girl who can't sing, and is an even worse actress. I couldn't even make it through the video, it was so awful. If it wasn't pulled for her cleavage (I didn't know they made a dress-up box of skank clothes), I'd hope it would've been pulled for being too horrific to watch.

My niece, who is 7, wears an outfit similar while she's figure skating. Her top has a sweetheart dip (as she calls it) straight across her chest. Her skirt is shorter than Perry's is. She has a few skating outfits of different colors, including nude, that aren't far off from the dress Perry was wearing.

Perry was playing dress up... my niece dresses up for her skating competitions... I don't see it as that bad. The top could have went straight across rather than show her cleavage but I just don't see the big deal, personally :\

[deleted account]

I can't really see an issue with it, she has a little clevage on show, so what! I would have no issue with my son watching that (if he watched tv) because it is normal IMO.

I think it's a little too much for a children's show. Yeah, kids see that much when they're out in the stores or what not but, for it to be on sesame street means that it's normal or acceptable for children, which is not true.

Oh man, how ridiculous. She's wearing dress up clothes. I HIGHLY DOUBT any 5 year old would be thinking "LOOK AT KATY'S BOOBS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Children see more cleavage, nipples, ass crack and vagina (really think about it, your kid is 3 feet tall, that chick in the barely there skirt and no panties, your kid looks UP while she walks by... HELLO VAG!) walking down the street with their mom and dad than you see in that video.

What a joke.
