Every time I get foils my hair needs a lot of maintenance and conditioning masks and stuff. I don't think kids are really ready for that with homework and playing to do.

My moms a beautician so ive colored my hair since i was 7 mostly normal colors till i was 12 then i had pink,green,blue every color you can think of if my daughters asks ill put it in her hair!!!! In my opinion its just hair it can fade out or be cut out i think thats a lot better than young kids getting tattoos and facial piercings and if having pink hair is the worst my kids do ill be happy

I would never bleach my children's hair for a couple of reason...A - I don't keep bleach in my house because it's dangerous! B - chemicals put onto your skin or scalp WILL ABSORB into your body. Just something to think about :)

I haven't really thought about this to be honest. I think I started at age 12 or so. i know it all started with one really terrible perm. I will never allow my daughter a perm, but maybe some highlights around the same age. Only time will tell.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't bleach my son's hair either. For one thing, he's a blonde anyhow so it would be pointless, plus I've seen really bad things happen to hair with bleach. The spray on stuff, wash out stuff or the mousse is what I meant earlier when I said I'd let him color his hair. Just wanted to clarify it's temporary hair dye for kids :)

I've always had a "it's hair. It grows back. You can cut it off" attitude about my own. So i don't think that would change too much if i had a girl. I started on mine at 12 and to be honest, haven't even seen my natural color in at least 9 or 10 years. Doesn't bother me at all. I have absolutely no desire to ever see it again. So i think that it would be rather hypocritical of me to say no if my son (or hypothetical daughter) asked m at the same age. Hell, there's a good chance I'd let them earlier than that. Like I said, it's only hair. It's not a tattoo, it's not permanent. It's not a piercing, no hole through my child's flesh. Bleaching I highly doubt though. Just way too harsh. Although there are non-bleach lightening techniques, but thats teen-ish years for sure. If they asked, and were at the age where they stopped "listening" to me (damn puberty), I'd rather take then to get it done than have then do some of the crap I tried doing to my own hair at that age. At least if it's done by a professional, they won't try to bleach it and end up walking around with an orange head. Lol.

Some streaks of temporary colour, a little spray on colour, it wouldn't bother me if they asked for that (although I don't see my boys asking).

Bleach in a young child's hair would be a big no no. I'm scared of bleaching my own hair because of damage. No way I'd apply it to my kids delicate head or fine hair. If they want to do it, they can wait till they are old enough pay for it themselves.

I wouldn't let my daughters dye their hair until they're in their teens.
I wouldn't even use the spray in temporary ones unless it was for some charity thing or something and they really begged me!
I guess I just don't see the point.

They've got their whole adult life to mess about with their hair, I think it's a shame to start messing about with it when they're kids too.

I let my dau use washable temporary hair dye for kids for the first time when she was 5... she is 12 now and wants to try using perm color next year. I have always been logical, scientific, and no art in me whatsoever. My dau is all about the arts, even as a little girl... so I am open to most of her ideas (no tats or piercings until she is 18).

my g/f just put hi-lites in her 5 year olds hair...I don't like it.
My mom didn't let me dye my hair until I was 13...and that took A LOT of convincing. Thank God I have a boy!

Mmm when they want to. As soon as you start dying your hair you either keep dying it or it looks shit for a year while it grows out. Or you have to keep putting 30 wash dyes in. They can wear a play wig for fun or something but no dying until like they're old enough to not change their mind about the colour the next day.

My boys have bleach blond hair anyways, so I doubt they'll ever need to bleach it. And if I have a daughter, she's going to have red hair like me, and she's never going to color it because it will be beautiful and perfect just the way it is! gqtm! Okay, I'm kidding about that. Although, I would never permanently color my own hair because I get so many compliments on the color I was born with.
Cole has had the temporary spray-in color done when he got a hair cut. It was blue. He was pretty proud of his blue hair. It only lasted a few hours. I have no problem with doing that or using colored or sparkly hair gel. For more permanent color though, probably not until they're in their teens. I might be okay with earlier, but their dad wouldn't! (it'll be a tough sell with him even when they're teenagers!)

I wouldn't let my kids dye their hair till they are teens (15 or 16). All that stuff is really not good for you hair and my cousin who has done my hair forever has told me that it's not recommended for children at all.

Definitely no bleach. Why ruin that perfect baby hair? But if it's just the spray-in stuff for fun, I would have no problem with it if she asked. As for actual dying (anything more than an 8-wash rinse) or highlighting, she can forget it until she is in her mid-teens. I have a friend who had the thickest, most wonderful hair as a child. She began dying and bleaching it early (12ish) and it is now so think she has to cover up bald patches.

how old?

Around here the little girls (about 7yrs) start getting highlights, some get perms. i think that is to young.

15 maybe a coloring depending on why, perm yeah - at 15 thats ok.

can't use manic panic without bleach unless you are a natural blond :) The bright colours can't show over dark hair.

no to bleach but the semi perm (like manic panic) colors are fun and i wouldn't have a problem dying my kids hair whenever they asked for it. my mom let me get highlights when i was 11...it very quickly escalated from pretty blond highlights in my already blond hair to bleaching, to the purple-est purple ever...and it stayed purple until i was 16 save 2 weeks when it was magenta. when i told my mom i wanted to dye it black, she actually hated the idea because the purple suited me so well hahahah

I'd have to say no to the bleach. My son has used the food coloring in his before for holidays or homecoming games, and the spray on temporary hair dye for kids for halloween but that's it. And my girls aren't going anywhere near it til at least highschool! I wish I'd just stuck with my natural color! I can't seem to get it back now! :)

I don't know about bleaching, that seems a lot harsher and damaging than just a simple dye job. (Then again, I wouldn't really know I guess!) It would depend for me. I don't think I'd be comfortable letting my kid have an entire head of unnaturally colored hair at any age (well, 18 I get no say...but before then! lol) but streaks of some color, blue, green, pink, purple, whatever, I guess I could go for that. I really don't know though, my DD is only 21 months, she would have to ask for me to even consider it and I would probably have to think about it!

I would never bleach my children's hair. I don't think my boys will need to colour it either. If I had a girl, maybe I would let her by the age of 14 or 15 if she outright asked for it. I have seen girls before maybe 8-10 years old with pink highlights.

I give my Jacob mohawks all the time, he's had them since he was 12 months old. He's gettin gone for Chritmas this year too. Too cute.

Not a fan of chemicals though, no bleach for my kids.

I'll have to cross this bridge when I get to it but, for now, I'll say that when Jacob is older, maybe sometime in elementary school, if he wanted to dye his hair blue or green or whatever color he wanted, I'd be ok with it. I'd do a temp dye job first, in case he ended up hating it. But the way I see it, as long as he's showing he can responsibly groom himself, it's his hair. And it's ONLY hair. It grows back. I'd also let him cut his hair however he wants it from a young age. Right now, I'm in sort of a stand-off with my MIL and FIL because they REALLY want me to cut his hair. They say it's too long and "he's a boy" and blah blah blah. I just had it trimmed (maybe a quarter inch) just to get the dead ends. They called right after we got home from the barber shop and asked us what we were up to. I told them we had taken him for a haircut and they were SOOO excited! We saw them on Thanksgiving and they were like "I thought you said you got his hair cut!?" My plan is to let it grow, to keep it out of his eyes and to let him decide when he's older if he wants a military cut like his Daddy or any other kind of hair-style he wants. It's HIS hair. He's only 3 so, in the mean time, I'm gonna thoroughly enjoy his curls and wrap them around my finger every chance I get!

My 4 1/2 year old has hot pink hair. Her choice. Sat through the whole thing with a beaming smile.



I try not to mention her hair or she will ask me to get it cut again...

I've bleached tons of kids' hair...use foils or a "shoeshine" technique, the bleach doesn't touch their skin...no big.

I'd do it for my kids except that their hair is tooooo beautiful...well...the girl's is, and I don't like boys with bleached hair anymore. But that's my personal preference.

hee hee... funny thing first... My oldest daughter has a lot of natural highlights and they are a huge variety of colors (it's really pretty - especially when I braid it!). I get people asking me ALL the time if we dye her hair, where we go to get it done, and what colors we use. She's 8, barely - her birthday is in September. I am just astounded when people ask me this! I would never think of dying my daughter's hair at this age (at least not permanent dye - we did use some temporary dye and put some pink highlights in her hair for her birthday - it was a fun Mommy daughter things we did while my MIL watched the little kids. But that was a special occasion and it came out after 10 washes or so. It's not something I would do on a regular basis!). I just say that my daughter was blessed with naturally beautiful hair and thanks for the compliment! :)



To me, this is something between painting kids' nails (harmless in my opinion) and peircing a baby's ears (not something I would advocate or do to my kids). I think that if I saw a kid with dyed hair and the kid was under 13 or so I might get a little "well, why?!" -ish, but in the end, it's really apersonal choice made by the child and the parent (in letting the child do it). Of course, if the parent forces the child to do it then I think it's not cool, but this is assuming the child asks to get it done.



I got my first highlights when I was 16 years old. That was the age limit set on it by my mom and I went to our family friend who is a hair dresser. It was fun, but I didn't dye my hair again until I was 19, and I haven't dyed it since...

If my daughter was old enough to ask and the color wasn't too out there, I would consider it. I was in high school before I ever did anything to my hair, including having it cut. My mom took me to have streaks put in my hair, as a sort of bonding experience I guess. But she didn't like the way they turned out and I didn't like the names people started calling me...

After careful consideration I MIGHT let my daughter color her hair, but only if we go to a trusted stylist who knows what they're doing and won't make her look like a "skunk" or something. But as with my stand on piercings, I don't think I'd let her do it until she was at least twelve.

Temporary coloured streaks? Sure, why not? But bleach? No...I think that's way too harsh for a kid's hair and scalp (mind you, my mom used to perm my hair when I was about 8. I looked like Mrs. Roper from Three's Company.)

i'd maybe do it at age 11. if they wanted it before then, i might . depends on my kid and if they were "worthy" of the extra stuff.
not sure about bleaching the hair though, i'd have to research that a bit more.

I'm pretty much in agreement with you ladies. When my daughter is old enough to pay for or earn her hair dye, then I'll let her do it. Eliza was Snow White for Halloween and my husband wanted me to put some sort of temporary black coloring in her hair. Ummm...not in her beautiful blond hair!

No way would i put bleach anywhere near my kids hair, it's way too harsh and toxic. But it think spray in colour is fun. My 5 year old wants pink and blue in her hair. So i said during the school holidays we can put some streaks in. I think with semi-permanent hair colour..maybe around age 12 -13? I first dyed my hair when i was 12, we put a copper gold rinse through it. It was very bright and i know some of my friends parents told my mum she was crazy for letting me colour my hair in year 7.

Ummm, bleaching seems a tad harsh on a kids hair, I did it for the first time I wass 15 I think.. I don't know really, dying can be okay if it's not overly chemical or all over, semi permanent dyes like manic panic are kid of cute, and not that bad, but bleaching is too much for me.

Age wise, I guess it depends on the kid, both mine are still young so I can't say, but as long as they want to do it for them and they are mature enough and earn it, than why not.. I don't think before they were 12 though...
