Milk-Part Deux Debate :-)

[deleted account] ( 24 moms have responded )

Cow's milk? Organic milk? Goat milk? Soy milk? No milk? Whole milk? Lowfat? Skim? Buttermilk? Breastmilk?!

What kind of milk do you use in your family?

We use plain old whole cow's milk-with the red cap. Growing up my mom bought lowfat milk and I just HATED it. It was watered down and tasteless. When I met my husband, who only drinks whole milk, I had no idea how tasty milk is. However, I do admit I am not a big milk drinker. My son & husband do drink a lot of milk though. I tried chocoloate soy milk once, and it was yummy. But I see it more as a treat and not something I'd drink daily.

I agree Traci. Whole milk was supported by the AAP for that extra needed layer of fat and brain development. But of course, every family will make the best decision for their own kid. I can't imagine that solely changing to a 2% milk will decrease childhood obesity. There are more nutrients, calicium, vitamins in that whole milk than lowfat/skim. Not a huge difference, but enough of a difference that this was my friend's dissertation thesis in her Graduate program when she became a Nutritionist. But yeah....kids NEED exercise, playing, running, and not the crap food. Any doctor will tell you that!

I have always heard that toddlers until age 2 need the extra fat that is in whole milk for their brain development, so that's what I've always done for mine. But a few years ago my ped told me that they are now recommending 2% because of the obesity epidemic. How ridiculous is that? Um, your kid isn't fat from drinking whole milk...he's fat because he lays around the house playing video games and munching on Cheetos and Coke all day! A little common sense goes a long way....*sigh*

In our house, hubby does most of the milk consumption. He has a salad bowl full of cereal at night before bed & drowns it in 1/2 litre of skim milk. On the few occasions that I have cereal, I like it dry (weird, I know). Most of my milk I consume in my coffee, and then it's whole milk. Michaela has only breastmilk and I plan to keep it that way as long as I can keep up the supply. When she's at Gran & Grandpa's when I go back to work, she'll have some goat's milk if they run out of my milk. Though, I'm not sure how much longer I can hold myself back from the urge to burn my breast pump, so she might have to get used to milk sooner :)

When Madeline was turning one, her doctor said that either 2% or whole milk were fine but she recommended using whol for Madeline until she turned 2 because she was on the smaller end. Cooper was always in the top half so we went ahead and gave him 2% because at that time, Madeline had switched to 2% and I drink skim so it just seemed to make more sense for us.

I love skim milk...we also go through at least 8 liters a week :) Molly is on formula now, but soon will be switched to cows milk. The general rule (at least that I have found) is that whole milk is best for babies over 1 yr. Recently I have been reading that 2% milk might be a better option than whole milk. Studies have suggested that the extra fat is not necessary and could lead to overweight babies.....
I imagine it comes down to personal choice, but what do you all suggest/think?

Trust me, if you were ever in the argument about cows milk...look out... I opened a can and right and left people were "attacking me" (which wasn't the right word). But I understand people have issues with milk (any kind), but I love how they come up their "theories" hahahaha, once again COM has entertained me :). hahaha I believe it was in the Breastfeeding group...but not entirely sure...Also be careful what you right there too! I like this group, we can agree to disagree and still have respect for one another...most other groups "its their way or no way". Sorry Sharon for crapping in your thread! :) hahahaha

I just love that expression...

Son still drinks breast milk, but also drinks whole organic Soy milk (b/c he won't drink the cow's milk). I cook with organic cows milk, but like Soy on cereal...never was a fan of Milk...It leaves a slimy feeling on my tongue...ick.

Well, the baby is still on breastmilk, but DH and I drink skim milk. I can't handle even 1% fat in milk - tastes gross to me. The two of us probably go through a gallon a week. I don't think there's anything wrong with drinking milk from other species, although I do worry about hormones and such in milk.

My kids drink organic whole cow's milk and my hubby and me both drink organic 2% cow's milk. Milk does the body good!

I think its nuts. Humans have been drinking the milk of other animals for so long. Cows, goats, alpacas, camels - if it produces milk, humans have used it for themselves although I haven't heard of many people milking house cats, I did read once of a culture that stole the milk from tigers to get their strength though....

UM and if cows had developed to be the dominate species, maybe we'd be the ones, milked, hahahahaha

oh.....the great bovine debate. I've seen the 'milk is poison' threads, and the next time i feel the need to french braid my armpit hair or exfoliate with granola....I may post on one of them.

We drink whole milk...I was born and raised on cow's milk (fresh from the tit). Kaya goes through 3 to 3 1/2 gallons a milk a week. I do love 2% also...mmmmmm. :) You know what really urks me?!??!! I understand when there are allergies and people just don't like drinking milk...But for someone to say that it is unnatural for us humans to drink from other species kind of bothers me...she also went on to saying "she doesn't see bovines popping out human babies in the pastures" HAHAHAHA (cracks me up)The reason I remember this, because I find it hilarious how people believe in different things...to each their own I guess...do you guys think that is outrageous?

Thanks for the veggie tip! Now that might work if Matt thinks it's a chocoloate shake with hidden veggies. Oh, I don't have to worry about cucmbers. It's the one veggie he'll suck down. Of course, it's 92% water content! He will eat corn on the cob as well-that's about it. I'll try it out and let ya know!

Actually, you can get pureed carrot, sweet potato, squash and cucumber into a protein shake and 'cover ' it with chocolate soy milk. (you can even use jars of baby food so you don't have ot steam and puree everything) Wipes out the taste of the veggies completely.

Another thing I do is add veggies (same general ones + Zucchini ....and I chop and puree chicken b/c Peter won't eat meat) to cornbread mix, and I make muffins. I just toast and butter a muffin for him w/ dinner. He eats the whole thing, so if you think about it....it's a chicken & veggies meal-in-a-muffin. Might be worth a try...

The kids drink 2% cow's milk and I drink skim. I can't stand for my milk to be so thick so the skim is perfect for me. =) We go through 3-4 gallons a week easily. There is a lot of milk drank in this house!

[deleted account]

YUMMY :-) Now if I can only get my son to drink a VEGGIE shake! Lol! It won't work...tried them all!

Sharon....try vanilla powder, a banana, some frozen strawberries, and chocolate soy milk. It's actually really good!

And if you use the frozen 'mixed fruit' (with canteloupe, honeydew, peaches, grapes - I think Dole makes that 'mix')- and regular or vanilla soy milk...it tastes like an orange creamsicle.

Thanks for the protein shake info Jenn. I'm starting to go back to work and will need something more than a PB & J in the morning to get me through until lunch time.

We can easily go thrrough 5 gallons of milk a week around here. My kids love it, but I'm the milk-whore. I'll probably have 3 / 20 oz glasses a day of 2% (at least) plus i use skim milk in my coffee. Autumn is following in my footsteps on that one as well (of course, her glasses of milk are MUCH smaller than mine). Peter likes regular (cow) and soy milk - any flavor, he's not preferable....and we also use soy milk for protein shakes & smoothies. (Protein shakes - great way to get food into a kid that won't eat many different things - scoop of powder...we buy the vanilla powder....1 banana, and some frozen strawberries {or any frozen fruit} and whatever 'flavor' soy milk you prefer; stick it in the blender and whip away- my kids think it's a real milkshake. ......... it's also great in the morning if you're in a rush!)

[deleted account]

I give my son whole milk because he is pretty skinny and he likes it. Hubby drinks 2%/semi skimmed (whatever people call it).

I'm drinking skimmed/low fat at the moment, but I'm thinking of giving up cows milk altogeather because I've got loads of allergies and I'm hoping that cutting it out of my diet will help.

We are milk freaks at our house! My son's still on formula, but my husband and I go through about three 4 litre jugs of milk a week. We drink 1% and really like it. I tried to get myself used to skim milk, just because I drink so much of it, but skim grosses me out. I have to have milk with every meal, and I crave it when I'm really thirsty. I actually had to get up and pour myself a glass in the middle of this post!

I'm a lactaid kinda girl! I actually can't stand the taste of milk so when I was pregnant I added Hershey's syrup. The specail dark chocolate, that makes it healthier right....LOL

Whole milk here. We prefer it. I may be wrong but I thought I read once that the fat in milk is a building block for vit. D absoption. And sunlight. I can't drink anything but whole milk, you're right - the rest tastes like water has been added.

I like the mexican vanilla w/cinnamon horchata - a rice milk drink down here. YUM. but that is a treat.
