And she posted it on youtube.

I find this childish and disgusting.

What would possess someone to do this? Would you let your kid eat a bug like this?

Well I finally viewed the actual video. The kid doesn't eat the thing. He plays with it - but doesn't actually eat it. The video ends with the cicada climbing up his face.

Children put the nastiest things in their mouths...that's just what they do. I'm sure that she got the camera after she saw him with it in his mouth and realized that it wasn't going to hurt him. Most of the best videos are made on a wimb, you know lol

One of the boys in my high school would eat pincer bugs and swallow live guppy's (or whatever type of small fish they were) out of the fish tank in our classroom...... He was quite popular getting paid to see what else he would eat. ;)

omg that was funny he didnt actually eat it, he was playing with it, I know here we used to take lizards and let them bite our ears and they would hang there like earrings, sorta the same but not in the mouth. I personally wouldnt want my kid to put something like that in there mouth playing or not.

I'm a "not try anything new" kind of girl. So I would NEVER eat bugs. My kids, oh well. They already have. Yum Yum.

ewww yes, but perfectly natural. And if he did eat it, well the Aboriginal's (and the Natives from any country) ate/eat things like that all the time (I would assume anyway, I know the full bloods here do). It's protein LOL

And yeah, the "some people should never have children" comment is a little (no, a LOT) out there. To each his / her own, I suppose. Crunch, crunch. :P

No big deal. I see them being served at Night Market here. It's a delicacy. I've never tried it, I have the North American squeamishness built in, but I'm sure they are quite healthy.

I'm really saddened by the close-minded people who are suggesting it's abuse, neglect or that she shouldn't have had kids. Very narrow world you live in. It's just a bug! Really people.

I'm not gonna seek out bugs for my son or myself to eat but I'd also probably not really care if he decided to try on on his own as long as it wasn't poisonous. I don't know that it's a boy thing though because I remember once when I was little I saw a thing on National Geographic about how monkeys (I think it's monkeys) will poke sticks into tree holes to eat the ants. I ate ants after that. Too bad they were fire ants lol But hey, crunch, crunch. And although there is a certain "ew" factor for me, I'd definitely eat a bug for two reasons. One, if someone was going to pay me (like on Fear Factor) or two, I'd totally eat the bug protein if that's what it came down to for survival.

Really, she should never have had children because she let her kid put a bug in his mouth? That's a bit extreme! Where I grew up, bugs were a delicacy! If we go back, I'll teach my kids how to eat them. Guess I wasn't cut out to be a mom. Ooops, better call CPS on me!
I wouldn't post it on You-tube though. Then again, I wouldn't post any videos of my kids on there.

On average people eat 8 spiders a year in their sleep .

I really do not understand the assualt on the parents for the bug in the mouth ......the movie online maybe but a bug ? Come on !

That Mom should have her head examined for letting her child put a bug (dead or alive) in his mouth. Some people should never have children.

It would gross me out because I don't like bugs.

@Dana S - those Japanese Beetles are a pain in my ass!!!! When they come out, they eat my plants and flowers, and they cling to the laundry that I hang out. And not only do they eat my plants - they hump on them - it's like a friggin' Japanese Beetle orgy! I think I did this right so you guys can see it - but here's some pics I took last summer of a cicada on my laundry and some humpin' Japanese Beetles LOL! http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a...

hahaha my kids have eaten all sorts of things. Just the other day i picked them up from kindy and the teacher was horrified that my youngest had eaten a moth. I think she was more horrified by my MEH! response. Cicada wont hurt anyone but I would tell my kid it's yuk. Definitely wouldn't post it on youtube

@Hope: well in many countries, cicadas are snacks for real people. Mmmmmm good! You only think its gross because you've not been raised to eat such delicacies. Frankly, I suspect dipping it in chocolate could make it quite tasty...

The fact that it's alive grosses me out, but otherwise, it wouldn't bother me. We used to collect flying termites and fry them in butter and salt and put them on baked potatoes in Africa. In the market, you can buy a bag of seasoned cricket parts - which I have eaten as well. So, I wouldn't eat a live one and would prefer my kids don't, but dead, meh, no biggie. I'll probably teach them how to eat flying termites when we take them out to Africa! :)

Well, in other cultures, these insects are on the menu and a valid source of protein. I had a friend who lived in Japan and he and his family ate insects. So, it goes against our American sensibilities perhaps, but there are worse things out there than letting your kid eat an insect.

My child has refused to be called by his proper name today .....all day he has insisted he is Bear Grylls so it wont suprise me if he finds a bug to eat sometime soon.

As long as it hasn't been exposed to pesticide it isn't a bad thing. At least it is protein.

Many cultures eat insects routinely as part of their diets. Cicadas are big and so might be considered delicacies some places.

In fact, when we were in Venezuela, down in the jungle, we were invited to dinner by a native family, One of the items on the menu were Rhinoceros Beetle grubs, lightly roasted over the flames. My dad said they were crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and slightly sweet. He told the father of the host family that he couldn't let us have any and the father said back via two translators (Huaica to German, then German to Spanish) "I know what you mean. Once you let women have something good they demand it all the time."
