Okay so everyone has agreed or disagreed about having a potty mouth and etc. My question is that I always listen to music when I'm on the computer or cleaning. I like a variety of it like country, rap/hip-hop, pop, and oldies haha. Well my oldest came home the other day and was singing a verse of Akon's "Smack That", I don't know whether any of you have heard it but honestly for my 7 yr old to be singing it made me soo mad!! Yes I do swear sometimes, however not in front of the kids unless it's accidental, some of the songs I may play may swear but if my kids are in the room, I won't play an explicit version for a REASON! I asked him where he heard it and he said his friend had it on his music player on the bus. My next question is that what parent doesn't monitor their childs things at this age? Am I wrong for being offended?! I told him that music was inappropriate for his age and he was like why? I said do you hear what you're saying? He said ya what's wrong with it? I didn't know how to reply and my fiance said bud, we don't say those kinds of words you know that. My son replied that it's just a song. Help?! Lol

my kids listen to whatever, i don't care. its just music. my oldest is 10, and his favs are green day, metallica, and foo fighters.
my 6 year old likes metallica, that's what he asks for everytime in the car, lol.
my youngest doesn't have much of a preference yet, but i do catch him singing to my dave matthews cd, now that he's had to endure it a couple hundred times, (i love DMB), lol.
music is music, it's fun. nothing to be taken seriously, IMO.

We listen to indie rap, it's more like spoken word meets indie rock. It's mostly political. I listen to punk, blues, variety of crap from all decades, we both listen to rock, there's a lot of swearing. I don't care if he swears so it's not a big deal. Most of our music has a serious message behind it, there's nothing with horrible lyrics, or entirely sexual in such a way that it sounds as though it's written by a preteen boy. I want him to grow up with music that has meaning, I don't want him to fall for crap lyrics with a club beat behind them. I want him to appreciate musical and lyrical content within the songs, and not just go along with modern pop. I fail to see how, with the plethora of musical resources we have available to us, people can listen to meaningless, talentless dribble. In the end he can listen to whatever he wants, but I can only hope that by raising him with a huge variety of talent and a huge focus on music he'll have better taste than what I'm seeing popularized at the moment.

We listen to music TV which bleeps out the swear words, if my daughter listens to unedited music (which I do not have a problem with, i am more concerned with censorship) then it is in her bedroom where no-one else can hear it.

yea i listen to rap/hip hop/country/rock! My son will be 3 in December he likes Justin Beiber,black eyed peas,Kesha,and that new song Fly like a G6 he can sinng most of the songs almost all the way through but he dosent say the curse words he stops when they sing them then he goes on with the song! ITS TO CUTE when he head bangs and sings GET DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS LMAO! Music is art i wouldnt stop my kids from seeing paintings with naked people in them!

We listen to all sorts from heavy metal to rap. We're going to try and watch what we play as Logan grows up. TBH when Smack That came out I was about 17 and it took me a few listens to realise what it actually meant so tbh at 7 years old he isn't going to understand.

I don't think that a 7 year old should be listening to those kind of songs, but kids pick up on things so quick it's crazy!

Music is art, kids have to learn that just coz they saw it on tv, heard someone say it at the supermarket etc. doesn't mean it's okay for them to say it/do it.

I listen to whatever i want , my fave show was a music program called rage when i was 3,4,5 years old and still to this day they played everything i heard all sorts of words and saw all sorts of video clips i never swore in front of my parents or to anyone , i only ever starting swearing as an older teen and adult as a form of expression .

He can listen to anything i listen to , he will learn these words are for expression and not for use against a person , that there is a time and a place for these words .

I agree with your son , it IS just a song if you are worried you could explain that some people are not to keen on hearing that particular song .

wow. Usually I don't listen to anything in the car except VeggieTales songs, Disney songs, or just kids songs like "Row, Row, Row Your Boat". But once they reach the age where they are off to school, you can't help sometimes what the other kids are listening too. It sucks though! lol. Just explain that the song can be offensive to some people and that is why he shouldn't be singing it.

Ok, in my house...

... the singer is an artist. His words belong to him to express him. It does not hurt you (referring to my child) to NOT say the word or to substitute a word (I wanna be a billionaire so friggen bad) I actually prefer the radio edit version of that song.

I do curse when I sing along with eminem most of the time. My 15 yr old can sing the song without edit unless his brother and sister are around. Then we play by "the little kid rules".

I'm not worried about me so much as I am my kids offending and scaring off another parent and friend.

I mostly listen to the radio when my kids are up and about, and they generally 'bleep' or silence the particular words in question.
I don't do the rap / hip hop thing anyway, so that has no effect on what they hear.
I listen to a lot of rock, but again, mostly on the radio - I reserve the i-pod music for when they are asleep and I'm just chilling out.
There are some explicit lyrics in my music and the reason I don't play it around the kids isn't necessarily 'content', but rather the fact that you just can't listen to Metallica on 'low volume'. If I can't crank it, I can't listen to it......and if I crank it, I can't hear my kids.
(or we all have to shout to talk, which I don't like either)
Now, I won't say that what I listen to isn't ever played in front of them - it is.....Hell, I have a 3 1/2 year old that knows all of the words to AC/DC's "The Jack"........the meaning of the song is lost on her because she is so young, but she does know it.
(for those of you that have never heard the song...I'll post it after this. )
