The reason for the epi thing is because if there is ink covering the spot that they have to go through, there is a chance that the ink could travel into your spinal fluid - so having a c-section cut through a tattoo would not be the same thing and it wouldn't matter - they would just cut through it.

@Chrissy - the glands or milk ducts are in your breast. The pores where the milk come out of are in your nipple - and yes, some of them could get "pierced" if you get your nipples done - but there are pores covering your nipple (I think about 11 of them), so there is no way that all of them would be pierced and therefore you couldn't breastfeed. I think a lot of people are under the impression that our nipple is like a bottle, and the milk comes out of only the middle of the nipple, when that just isn't true.

HOLY HELL! Tell your friends NOT to use a GUN or SEWING NEEDLE! It's needs to be sterile and have a hollow needle so the jewelry has room.

I had my right nipple pierced but I took it out when I found out I was pregnant. I miss it but it hurt so fucking bad, I wouldn't do it again if you paid me.

I had no problem breastfeeding at all

Woah, ok, i was just reading a bit of what was written before i added my comment, and sorry to go off topic but....
WHAT? You can't get an EPI if you have a back tattoo covering the insertion point??
Oh.
I have a peice from coccyx to shoulder blade and hip to hip width... I DON'T want an epi.I never have. I didn't have on the first time.... But not being able to get one because of that? Sighh.
As for the Nipple peircing, the only things i can say are No GUNS ever. Stupid people who get peircings unprofessionally are asking for trouble. In all sorts of ways. Same goes for peircing guns. I should know.
So....er... Nipple peircing and breast feeding? I know three different women.
One chose not to breast feed thinking she couldn't from the offset. She found out later she could and felt aweful for not. Not that she should have.
The second had about 5 nipples peircings and tried. She struggled and gave up, but it wasn't impossible. Part of her *problem* was that she had extremely (in her opinion) small breasts and the baby couldn't latch well. She expressed for a while and then moved on due to the awekwardness. She actually got a breast enhancement because she liked how they looked when he milk came in.
The third, has a nipple peircing, has never had any problems and is happy to do it again with her second :)
I think it's partially physical and partially mental and each woman is different.

lol!!! those were the days!!!! i remember peircing my girlfriends and my second holes in our ears in the toliets at high school, next thing i knew all the girls in the year got wind of what were up to and started lining up for us to shove sewing needles or another girls earing through there ears, was fun though ;) but before i had my son i was concerned on the damage my nipple peircing had done i was about four months preggs when i decided to take it out(i think i shed a tear lol!!!!,not really but it was a moment!!!!!)i must say i could feed out of it flow wasnt as fast as the other that hadnt been peirced but the doc said i am one of the lucky ones there are lots of peirced nipples that wont be able to breastfeed again as it puts holes through the glands that the milk come out of.....

i cant believe people would actually get there nipple pierced by a gun that is outrageous all piercings i know of except for the ears are done with a surgical sterile needle who would punish themselves that much??? I have a few body piercings and am horrified at the thought of a gun going anywhere my nipple.....

@Jenn, i didn't mean the C-section cut, i meant because you have to get a spinal block, which is basically an epidural but stronger, higher up, all that.
So i was wondering, at one of those hospitals where they won't do an epidural through ink, would they do a spinal block? in an emergency situation?
Would they think it would be more dangerous to put you to sleep for it or put it through ink?
And the nipple thing, i know that we have many holes as i've been breast feeding for 13 months now :) I was thinking of the scar tissue blocking them. I know i get a lot of scar tissue from most of my piercings and was thinking that it could block off the whole lot of them. lol :)

There is some fear that somehow the ink from the tattoo would get carried from the needle into the epidural space and cause some type of dangerous complication. Although some anesthesiologists are hesitant to place an epidural through a tattooed area of skin there is no evidence that this is dangerous. There is only a small amount of dye used in the tattoo process and once the tattoo has healed the dye basically just stains the skin. When the epidural is performed, skin and other contaminants are not carried with the needle into the epidural space. Now, if you have a tattoo that is not fully healed this might be dangerous, but most pregnant women aren’t getting new tattoos at the end of their pregnancies. Your anesthesiologist may decide to look for another place to insert the epidural needle if you have a tattoo on your lower back in order to avoid potential scarring of your tattoo but he doesn’t have to.

Yeah, maybe it's different in Canada - because they told me that if there wasn't a spot to go where there was no ink, that they would not do it.

ive never heard of not getting a epi due to tattoos on back i had to have a c-section ten months ago,not by my choice... (i am in aussie, not sure if its different here?) i had a epi i also have spina-bifdia (no tail bone) so they had to do some reasearch as to were they could insert it, and were they could do it was right through my tattoo and not once did they mention it was an issue as they had to get my permission to do it higher up in the spine as there was alot more complications if they got it wrong...

[deleted account]

I wanted my nipples pierced at one stage. But I am scared it will end up like a shower nozzle with lots of leaky bits hahahaha.

Yea, I'm thinking using a piercing gun or a big sewing needle would be a bad idea. Maybe? ;P

Hhahahaha Chrissy that's awesome!!
I know what you mean, i got emotional when i had to take my belly ring out when i was pregnant! I was so upset that i looked like some piercing-less freak! hahahaha sooooo i got my tongue done :D
I used to have 9 in my ears and they kept getting infected (obviously haha) so i took most out :'(
I think i might have a mums afternoon off and get pierced! :D
....Just not my nipple. It wouldn't be very appropriate of me to squirt milk all over the piercer :/

@Corrie, if you have a space on your spine where there is no ink it would be fine but otherwise probably not.
Does this mean if you had to have a cesarean they would have to put you to sleep rather than put a needle through ink?

I know right! i don't understand it! The only professional piercing i have had was my tongue. The others were done with needles but by friends,, My belly was done on a train and then in a car park, my lip was by a piercing trainee lol, my boob surface piercing was the result of a drunken night and all of my ear piercings, except the my first ones when i was 10 have been done by friends with either a gun, piercing needle or a regular needle haha
But i would NEVER put a freaking gun anywhere that wasn't my ear! Especially my nipple! hahaha
Surely that would cause problems when breastfeeding right?

lol i agree with you Jocelyn! These girls are crazy lol
Ear piercing with a gun doesnt bother me. I don't care how anyone pierces their ears lol but to pierce your nipple with a gun actually makes me feel sick lol

Oh dear god I must have missed the gun part!

Please no! Don't EVER pierce ANYthing with a gun!!! Not even your ears!

Go to a proper piercing/tattoo parlor.

I can't even imagine piercing a nipple with a gun *shudders*. Aside from the fact that it would hurt like HELL (shoving a blunt bar thru your flesh is much much more traumatic than a sharp, hollow, surgical needle [designed to remove a small bit of skin to make room for the jewelry]), plastic piercing guns cannot be sterilized properly. Sure you can wipe them down with rubbing alcohol, but all it takes is one microscopic drop of blood to transfer a blood born disease.

If something cannot be put into an autoclave, or it doesn't come fresh out of a sterile package, DON'T USE IT.

i had one nipple pierced and i might add i do miss it but wont get it done again it hurt too much!!! lol!!! I had no trouble feeding out of that side my son had to work abit harder to get milk but he enjoyed that side better than the non pierced side...i still had same amount of milk from each when i would express it would just take abit longer from the nipple that was pierced it was more tougher than the other nipple i mean when it came too the cracked dry saw nipples, it handled it well :)

julianne talks how one of her nipples was pierced and it affected that side. however she just fed off of one side, and didn't seem to have problems. of course she'd probably have to tell you that herself to make sure, lol.

I had one nipple pierced; the only thing that it affected was I couldn't pump as easily out of my pierced side. But both my kids preferred to nurse on the side that had been pierced lol.

For the nipple piercings, I have never had it done nor do I know anyone who has. For the tattoo/epidural situation, I was told that if you have a tattoo in the middle of the upper part or your lower back, you will not be able to get an epidural. I have a tattoo on the left side of my lower back and had no problems with an epidural.

Eh, I have a back tattoo and had an epidural with my first child and no one batted an eye. Didn't cause any problems.

But ugh- they're doing the piercings themselves? I would imagine that a professional with a needle would create the least amount of damage.

Ouchhhhh! :)
I wouldn't see why it would be an issue, except that you might have more holes to have the milk come out of!

Oh - as for the tattoo/epi thing - I have a back piece and the anesthetist pretty much gave me shit for it, but they were able to find a spot with no ink where they could go through. It doesn't matter what kind of ink they use - if you have a tattoo covering the spot where the epi would go in - they won't do it - no ifs, ands, or buts about it!

I had both of mine pierced, but had taken them out before having kids. I successfully breastfed my son and my twins girls with no issues at all - and yes the milk does come out of the "extra" holes LOL! I don't understand how it would make you not able to breastfeed - the needle only pierces through one spot - you have SEVERAL ducts in your nipple. So unless you have your nipple piercing stretched, or you have a giant mass of scar tissue which causes you to have funky looking nipples, I don't get how it would be an issue at all.

Oh goodness...they are going to pierce each other's nipples unprofessionally? That's horrible. If they are dead set on getting their nipples pierced, they need to go to someone who knows what the hell they are doing. But, that's just my opinion. I've never had my nipples pierced, so I have no experience there. Although I do have a lower back tattoo & I got an epidural just fine. :)

Thanks all :) I'd love to hear more stories!
The reason i asked is because i have a couple of friends, planning to pierce each others nipples with their own piercing gun or some kind of thick sewing needle.
I would imagine, especially with the gun, that piercing it unprofessionally with something that is blunt and not sterilized, that would cause a lot more problems...?
But of course they won't listen to me, even though they both plan to breastfeed one day!

I have a lower back tattoo and had an epi that is no longer an issue with the new inks used , there are a few ladies on here that have nipple piercings and breastfed quite easily only one I can think of had trouble , it is all about the placement of the piercing .

[deleted account]

It depends on how it was done, all the women I know who've had it done were asked wether or not they ever planned to breastfeed, don't know what they do differently but from what I've heard you can specify so that its still possible. A lot of women with lower back tattoos can't get the epidural but some could depending on the placement.

They -can- if too many milk ducts are severed and too much scar tissue builds up. It's pretty individualistic. Many mothers have no problem nursing despite nipple piercings. It's just recommended to have a plastic, easily removable piercing in place.

Not for me. I had mine done about 5 years ago and took it out maybe 3 years ago... and successfully breastfed 1 of 2 babies since then. Although milk does come out of one of the 2 holes in one nipple, but that's not really an issue.
