Hush! Frito-Lay to pull most of its noisy SunChips bags, go back to original after complaints

NEW YORK (AP) -- Frito-Lay hopes to quiet complaints about its noisy SunChips bags by switching out the biodegradable bags for the old packaging on most flavors.

The company is switching back to original packaging, which is made of a type of plastic, for five of the six varieties of the chips. It will keep the biodegradable bags for its sixth variety, its original plain flavor. That's its second best-selling, after Harvest Cheddar.

The snack maker said the switch started in the middle of September and should be complete by middle to late October.

The bags were launched in April 2009 with a big marketing effort to play up their compostability because they're made from plants and not plastic.

But the technology Frito-Lay used to make the packaging results in a bag that's stiffer than the plastic packaging -- and louder. Customers complained. Groups on Facebook abound with names such as "I wanted SunChips but my roommate was sleeping..." and "Nothing is louder than a SunChips bag."

Spokeswoman Aurora Gonzalez said the company received complaints about the noise from the bags, although it also received thanks from customers who liked being able to recycle them.

So the decision was made to remove the bulk of the biodegradable line.

"We need to listen to our consumers," she said. "We clearly heard their feedback."

Frito-Lay, a unit of PepsiCo Inc., based in Purchase, N.Y., is developing its next generation of biodegradable bags and will use what it learned with the SunChips effort, she said.

More and more companies are trying to develop sustainable packaging, not just to save on costs but because it's what shoppers want, said Bob Stolmeier, business development manager for Zip-Pak, who works with companies to create packaging. But there's a limit to how much shoppers will sacrifice in the name of sustainability, and apparently noise is one of the sore spots.

"There's no reason to offer solutions that the market would not accept," he said.

Let me just say: What the hell is wrong with this picture?!?! People would rather have the convenience of quieter bags and NOT do something that could help our planet?!?! I see the movie Wall-E may just be an accurate foretelling after all...

Why don't they tip the bag out into a bowl and eat them... and shut up. LOL.

Even if these people didn't want to throw the chips in a bowl, they COULD invest in the large Ziploc Freezer Bags. Same concept, but quieter.

What is the human race becoming?

I hate those reno shows where they have a Hills hoist in the backyard and then the "designers" make over their backyard with water features and introduced plants and don't replace the clothesline. What a fantastic influence.

I would be super fly pissed if someone told me I couldn't have a clothes line either! Ugh.

Disappointing. I thought it was pretty funny that they were that loud. I saw a special segment done on the news about the bags. They're actually much louder (decibel wise) than standing on a subway platform while a train goes by. Still, get over it people.

This is ridiculous. The planet is suffering enough as it is why the heck are they regressing????

@Charlene, same here! The whole city has a by-law that prevents anyone from having a clothes line... And they try to call themselves a "green city"...argh

I was specifically buying Sunchips because of the biodegradable bags, but the only flavour I like is the harvest cheddar!!
Hubby said they were too noisy for watching a movie or tv, or talking lol, hmm..... I thought what could I do to lessen the noise and still have chips?? EUREKA!!! A BOWL!!!
That was my light bulb moment people. I started dumping the whole bag into a big plastic (quiet) bowl. Problem solved.
Maybe I'll complain now. I want to buy products that help our planet not help destroy it.

maybe they shouldn't be eating chips in the middle of the night when people are trying to sleep!

the only time you need a "quiet" chip bag is when you're trying to be sneaky...sun chips was trying to do fat america a favor hahahah

Man, people will complain about ANYTHING.
Really?? Noisy chip bags?? The plastic ones are noisy too...

@Loureen, that totally reminds me of something. When we lived in our old house, there was no clothes line so Craig was going to put one up for me, because I LOVE the smell of clothes dried on the line, it would have made our energy bill A LOT smaller AND it's good for the environment. Alas, the neighbourhood we were in had some sort of rule against them.... :S
Sometimes my mind gets boggled by ignorance and ridiculous rules...

Really?
I buy these chips all the time. When I open them I dump them in a bowl with a lid and throw away the bag, and I can tell you it's a very easy task. I actually loved the idea of the biodegradable bags. People can be so stupid.
Don't get me started on the solar panels.... Every house should have it.

God people can be screwed in the head sometimes .

This reminds me of when a family i knew spent a lot of money making their house self sufficiant and eco friendly only to be told they could not cover the entire roof with solar panels because the snooty people of the eastern suburbs deemed it ugly !

But hey fuck the environment if it insults your senses , noisy chip bags , ugly solar panels *grumble , grumble*

I'm with Kayle. My daughter loved those things. She thought the bags were da bomb. I did find them a bit annoying. I did as Amie suggests, dumped them in a bowl. Then my daughter proceeded to hunt down the bag and keep playing with it! Eek. But I'd rather put up with the annoying noise than the pollution. That's actually the only reason I bought them. I don't normally buy chips, I don't even like chips. So they've actually lost my business going back the other way. I guess they can't win either way.

No! Those bags keep my son entertained while we grocery shop!! lol He really does like the sound the bag makes. And I like my sun chips broken into smaller pieces (which he does when he bangs on the bag) lol

Plus really why does your chip bag need to be quiet? Even the normal bags are some what loud.

OH for Pete's sake! Dump them in a bowl.

It's what we did when we heard how loud the stupid bags were. Sheesh.

Lazy arsing people!
