Vicki- lol, it was a good definition so i copied and pasted.... we tend to forget that WMD is not just nuclear weapons but also includes chemical and biological weapons.....
from what i understand North Korea fired artillery rounds not WMD.... they do have WMD and they constantly threaten to use it

I am glad to hear about the evacuation plan, I was honestly worried about that.

As for the posts in so many different places, I do think that some countries that we don't have posts in and some that we do don't like our coverage. There are different reasons that we are located in different places. I am currently in Germany with the Military. They don't seem to mind us in our town and we do wonderful things for their economy. Our post employs 80% local nationals. That's a LOT of jobs for people. We also spend money on the economy, which helps. How we got here is something else entirely, lol. Same with Italy. I'm not even sure of exact reasons we maintain posts in countries that at one point may have needed peace keeping missions but now obviously do not. But our host countries allow us to be here. If their government didn't want us here, I'm sure they could ask us to leave. I'm only speaking of host countries, not places where missions are taking place.

I have been reading a lot about this stuff lately and I honestly had no clue that people did care about our presence in other countries. It seems silly to me for the reasons posted above. I feel so blessed for the opportunity to be living here.

I never watched the news before we got here, I stopped during OIF 1. But we only have 14 channels here and 3 are in German so the news channel is my go to. I have been seeing most of this on the internet though. I don't like the thought of more wars/movements. But we do have to support our allies. I hope that we don't go in all trying to be in charge. We can support them but let them lead the way. That's the best option IMO

amanda what does WMD stand for? and honestly really sincerely do NOT want to offend anyone at all...I think that is what makes some countries so upset with the states in this climate. that there are bases in so many countries (please please do not be offended - I totally respect what the men and women do when leaving their families and lives and risking to protect). I do expect some people to tell me that the countries want the bases and I really don't know enough to comment on that. just that there are bases in countries that people seem to think there are no need for (i.e. Italy for example).

there is an evacuation plan for US spouses in south korea..... and also, very little known and not much in the media about it but since invading Iraq there has been evidence of WMD found throughout our years there (NY Post has reported on it).... North Korea is very unstable and desperate I'm not at all suprised they would do something like this. Thier financial state is really what prevents them from being able to fully use thier WMD capabilities. i don't think it would be necessary to send over more troops, as we have been training the ROK army for so many years now and what we have there already are capable of keeping an eye on the situation. Honestly, if you pull up a world map and look at all the countries that the ?US is in (militarily speaking) we are strategically placed in correalation with WMD..... it's actually kind of interesting and something that we dont look at often

Yeah, it just moved up on my list. They've been working hard on nuclear enrichment for a long time, the timing of this attack seems a little suspect to me. I'm worried.

The threat of war with North Korea is my second biggest global concern after climate change. It does seem rather inevitable with Nutcase Jr. and Son running the show.

I have Armed Forces TV only (and a few German channels I can't understand) so I watch the news channel a lot lol I probably wouldn't know about this if it weren't for that.

It's very interesting to me. My Grandpa fought the Korean War way way back when, I had no idea (apparently I black out in History class?) that the war has never ended. That they just have a cease fire in place. CRAZY!!

As for the WMD, the main reason is that there is a difference between developing them and actually using them. Certain dictators have used them as a threat or aid to more power, causing mass genocide of the "lesser" people in their own country. Ahem, Kurds. We are keeping an eye on the others, I'm sure. Always assessing the threat. It's just part of the day to day stress of running countries, I'd guess. The U.N. is typically consulted a bit more in these matters. I also think that intelligence has gotten more precise since then. Iraq didn't have assembled WMD but they did have hidden caches of "ingredients" all over the country. Several Soldiers/Marines were exposed to those ingredients which have cause a multitude of issues depending on what the exposure entailed.

I always wonder why the US was so hell bent on waging a war with Iraq over non-existent weapons of mass destruction, and yet the whole world KNOWS North Korea has them (shit, they've even been testing them and had them for years) and yet no-one seems to care. Very puzzling to say the least.

I think I need to start watching the news more often because I didn't hear about this. I agree with you Bree, we don't want another Vietnam War on our hands. It would be a bad idea for more troops to be sent over there but allow the ones there to fight. The families that are there, they should evacuate them immediately! That is no place for the spouses and especially no place for the children!
