I am SO frustrated and I want a new eye Dr for my kids... What would you do? Here's what happened...
My oldest son has been seeing this Dr since 2006. We have never had any issues, but my oldest son is pretty compliant and easy to deal with. Now my youngest, Jared (5 years) needed his first eye exam, so I made an appointment with this Dr.
Jared is the kind of kid that is SUPER shy, he doesn't take to new people very well and he just has a harder time with things like this. I made the appointment a month ago, explained his personality and the situation and the woman on the phone suggested I bring my oldest in for his exam at the same time so Jared could see what it's all about and watch big brother get it done. So I took both of them in today. My oldest did great, got his eyes checked, dilated, the whole 9 yards. Jared was great with the technician but as soon as the Dr came in, Jared FLIPPED out and refused to cooperate.
Ok, so here's what made me mad. First, my son can't be the first child to have a melt down in his office. He is a pediatric ophthalmologist for gawds sake, you would think he could deal with a crying child. When Jared started to cry, the Dr plugged his ears, got very irritated and said "I can't stand whining!!" Then he picked up a small toy ( A PRINCESS doll) from a drawer and said "Here, you want this?" to my SON... A 5 year old BOY?! Like he wants to play with a freakin pink princess doll?! So that just made him cry harder. My approach when my kids get like this is to just be VERY calm, talk to them in a low voice so they have to quiet down in order to hear me and just try to remain calm. The Dr and his asst COMPLETELY blew it. TOTALLY BLEW IT. They kept saying "SHHH, there is NO reason for you to be crying, now stop that!"
Finally, I lost it. I said "With all due respect, I am his mother and I will handle this..." then I turned so I was in Jared's face and proceeded to calm him down. The Dr stomped out of the room and came back with a motorcycle toy. He said "Here Jared, I brought you this um, whatever this is..." and my older son said "A motorcycle." and the Dr said "Yes, a motorbike toy. You want this?" and Jared said "No." and the Dr... NO EXAGGERATION HERE... THREW the toy at him, got up and left the room without a word!!! He was sitting about 4 feet in front of him, threw the freakin toy at him, hit him in the shoulder and left. I was MORTIFIED. A GROWN MAN... SUPPOSEDLY A PEDIATRIC DR!!! OMFG. I was just in shock that a grown man would act that way!!! So Jared really lost it then, complete melt down mode and I knew it was all over. The Dr came back in and I said "This is ridiculous! Because of your reaction, there is little to no chance he will cooperate with you now. We're done." and the Dr said, "Maybe if you bring him back in 2 months..." and I said "Did you hear me? There is no way my son will trust you at this point."
Then my oldest asked "Dr, can I get a toy from the treasure chest?" and the Dr said "Yes my friend you can, you did very well. Jared may not choose a toy though."
OH. MY. FREAKIN. WORD. I just can not get over that a GROWN MAN, let alone a PEDIATRIC DR was SO unreasonable and imo, CRUEL to a scared child!!!
I am still SO upset over this... so frustrated. I am sorry this is so long.
