Plastic surgery or a body mutilation?

Okay so I am not sure if this has come up before but I just wanted to talk a little bit about plastic surgery. I was talking to a friend the other day and plastic surgery came up. I told her that after I am done having my children I will be having a tummy tuck. This is not for anyone else this is for me to make me feel more comfortable in my skin. She was completely against plastic surgery saying that it should not be allowed because god would not want you to mutilate your body.

I was just curious on what people thought on the subject. Would it be okay if the plastic surgery was to fix a tumor growing out of a face or fixing burns on a body?

Obviously I don't think that plastic surgery is bad. It is a choice for each person to make for themselves. I believe that if someone wants to do it that it is totally up to them and they should not be judged on their decision.

So what do you think fellow COM's is it okay or do you believe it is body mutilation?

I totally agree with you Loureen! I think that if changing their sex makes them happy then they should not be judged for it to me it would be just the same as getting bigger boobs or a nose job. Either way I don't think that it is wrong.

Sex reassignment - i know a boy who literally felt with all his heart he was a girl from birth his personality was the same , this child was five when he told me he wished his penis would fall off and dissapear ( scary , as trans gender children have been know to cut off their own penis in frustration ) his parents were normal , everyday parents , they went to church worked hard and loved their child he wasnt " made " transgender by anyone he was born that way its very ignorant to think it is a choice .
you could never know unless you met and knew a transgender person how horrible and awkward it is for them to live in a body that is not theirs .

Dude, if I could afford it I would totally get a boob job. These kids have done the poor things in! I'm not saying I would go huge with them, just wouldn't mind them being nice and perky again!

Some people can take it to an extreme, yes, but it is their choice. I don't think it is wrong unless you are taking from your families needs to get it done.

does your friend have shaggy eyebrows? a faint moustache? one inch long leghair? i'm guessing not.. does she trim her nails or even paint them? if so she is altering the body god gave her. at this point in my life im against plastic surgery being done to me. however i think its a bit of a double standard to play the god card just because someone is doing basically the same thing as her only in a more extreme manner.

and about circumcising, im against it but most people that are for it believe it is a covenant we have with god -- that it is the one time it is okay with and even required by god that we mutilate ourselves.

Quoting Traci: The only thing I think is mutiliation is sex "reassignment" surgery. I don't see how any ethical doctor could do that....
What about hermaphrodites? Surely they've got a right to choose to be one sex?

I think that is an individual choice and I don't see anything wrong with it but I do think doctors should be responsible and at some point should say no when it comes to the plastic surgery addicts.

As far as gender reassignment surgery goes doctors are being ethical by medically treating patients that have gender identity disorder/gender dysphoria. Candidates for gender reassignment surgery have to undergo hormone therapy and counseling and live in their desired gender roles for at least a year before the get the procedure.

Personally i wouldn't, but that's because i am a wimp and also can't afford it!!
Anyone else wishing to do it tho, fair play to you!
The only time i worry is when people seem to get addicted to it and don't know when to stop.
As for sex change operations......the whole idea of most plastic surgery is to make the person feel better about themselves so i don't see why a sex change should be singled out really :)

I have no problems with someone having plastic surgery. One of these days, I'm going to get a boob job and a tummy tuck and get my pre-baby body back! I think as long as you are doing it for yourself and not for someone else, go for it! This is not surgery but my mom recently started getting botox because my cousin is a dermatologist and offered to give it to her for free if she could use before/after pictures and mom has this new found confidence! She is so happy with it and if it's done to look natural and not too extreme, I say go for it!

I think plastic surgery is ok. Obviously, just like with anything else, people can go a little overboard, but as a whole i think that doing something that makes you feel good about yourself is a good thing! 5 years ago my sister lost 60lbs, and then she had a breast reduction/lift and a tummy tuck. She looks great!

I think that doctors that perform these surgeries need to be ethical, and not perform surgery on people that are not good candidates due to psychological issues or health issues. You have to keep in mind that all surgery has risks. It's like Kanye West's mom, she was perfectly healthy and then had elective surgery and died. Scary.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having plastic surgery. And I've never thought about it in terms of what "God" would think. If having your tummy makes you have a better self image then go for it. I've had some work done and I have absolutely no regrets. Just be sure to do it for you and noone else.

It's not something I would personally chose to do unless it was for reconstructive purposes, but I don't see it as mutilation.
If you're able to fund it and willing to go through the surgery and recovery I don't see why anyone else needs to comment on it. If you asked for her opinion, then she's entitled to explain why she thinks it's not a good idea, but beyond that it's really none of her business.

oh yeah the bride of wielderstein ( sp? )
well its a little disrespectful for a " friend " to make you feel dumb by enforcing ( her ) god onto you , when it is not of your beliefs .

I'm not really sure about what her beliefs are with circumcision.

The thing is I am not religious at all, but having someone tell me that god would not want me to mutilate my body made me kind of feel dumb for wanting to do this.

I do agree with you Krista people do take it too far! Like the lady that looks like a cat :o I think it probably becomes an addiction for some people and they just cannot stop. That however could not possibly happen to me as I do not have the funds to look like a plastic doll lol.

I think that some people can take it too far and end up looking a little "mutilated," but if someone is in a healthy frame of mind and the surgery will help how they feel about their body, then I'm all for it. God doesn't even enter the equation, for me. I've thought about things I might like to change about myself, but I think I'm too much of a wimp to put myself through that much pain for cosmetic reasons. But, who knows...we'll see how saggy my belly is after I'm done having kids...I might be lining up for a tummy tuck in a few years too!

If it is your choice then go for it i say , it is not mutilation if you choose to do it .

Now i dont want to start a debate on this i am not saying its right or wrong, but does she have the same views on Circ. ? I dont know , it just seems lots of religous people circumcise for god yet changing your body on your own free will is against god sorry that seems strange to me.

there is one thing we truly own in this life and its our own bodies what you choose to do with it is your own choice and no one should make you feel bad or worse use god against you ( sorry so sick of hearing people ram god down everyones throats )
