I just watched a very disturbing video. A man went around surveying a bunch of people on why we celebrate the 4th of July. Most people had NO idea, and this bothered me, especially with all that is going on in our government, today. Do YOU know why we celebrate the 4th of July?
(I will post the video after I get a few responses, am honestly hoping it was just the group he surveyed and not a reflection of our country as a whole)

Wow, history has never been my subject but even I know why we celebrate it. Of course, being married to a soldier, you're darn right, I better know what it's about. That's embarrassing. Makes me wonder how many people I know who don't know why we celebrate.....maybe I should walk around asking. Lol I can make my own stinking video, maybe I'll just capture my smart friends though.

Oh, and Jodi - January 26th is Australia Day. I can't remember off the top of my head WHY it's Australia Day, but I know it is. Do I get 1/2 a point? :)

Oh good Lord... that video makes me sad. I'm not particularly patriotic, but I still make a point of knowing that stuff! How did those people ever graduate high school without knowing that?!?! Wow... I am ashamed for my country after watching that...

HAHAHA (choking on coffee) Thanks Cathy!! but yes that is extremely sad. We lost our Day in 1994 because of aparthied or the death of it 31 May . Oh what new instead we got Freedom Day, Heritage Day, Womans Day and Youth Day. So on the up side we have 4 days instead of one and no one cares except for the fact we get the days off. A number of things are lost in time and all of it important.

haha yes it was the day we gained our independence from GB. It doesn't surprise me in the least that those of other countries know, your education systems are so much better than ours!

Oh, and it's not that I have ANYTHING against Americans, BTW. Many of my friends are American, and incredibly well versed on all of this, and I love them dearly. I want to make that clear. I know there are MANY who do care about the world around them. I just find it incredibly sad when someone can't identify their own history, let alone care about anyone else's. In our country, we are taught all of it, dirt and all.

You know it's actually scary when people don't know the history of their own country or the reason for certain holidays. SA has plenty far too many if you ask me but we know the reason for each one and even have celebrations set up for those days.

Yep. I think my point was that it is sad that some Americans have no clue about their own Independence Day, an important marker of their history. But I am also pretty sure that MANY Americans are unaware of any of the other important dates in history in the world, and yet somehow, theirs is well known worldwide. If their own citizens can't even identify its history, then really, there are some major gaps in their education system.

Isn't it something to do with indepence of the US - don't you call it Independance day? It's quite sad that American's don't know why you celebrate.
By the way I'm British so I'm kind of guessing from what I have seen and heard, so please don't shout if I'm wrong I wanted to play too...

Hey I live in South Africa and even I know its Your independance day. The day you declared independance from the British in 1776, and was the begining of the War of independance which end on the on the 3 September 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Britain recognized the independence of the United States (with western boundaries to the Mississippi River) and ceded Florida to Spain.

I'm an Australian and I know why you celebrate 4th of July. It's a no brainer - Independence Day people!! Adoption of the declaration of independence - not rocket science. So yes, that disturbs me.
Now.....here's one for you. Can you tell me what is the 26th january without googling it?
