I know, that's about annoying as all get out. I like when we can post that we've started a new convo, posting that we've replied...not so much.

Harry Connick Jr.left a show in Australia last year because a group of white guys got up and did a skit in black make up pretending to be the Jackson 5

I can kind of see how it looks racist as it does kind of look like the cupcakes have black face on. But it's a stretch, honestly.

then again I guess they must have that one marketed to kids as some people have said they're kids loved watching it. I can see it working...kids being pushed down aisle in grocery store freaking out over wanting that product. poor things. what happens when they pour it on top and it doesn/t sing :)

[deleted account]

I would totally see the blackface in it immediately. I agree, how can someone a the company have missed that?! and the fact that it is a stupidly annoying commercial.

so what color were the cupcakes supposed to be? were they supposed to be chocolate cupcakes? If so then you wouldn't be able to see the glaze as well. It's really retarded that people would get so mad about flipping cupcakes! they are food! you eat them! it's not like the cupcakes are going to join the KKK or anything.

[deleted account]

So was there a lawsuit on this, or just pulled to avoid a lawsuit? Hey...I think the "black face cupcakes" should be introduced at McDonald's!

They DO look blackface. But I doubt they set out to make it look like blackface.. LOL

It looks like black face because the lips are big and pink, the teeth are huge and white, and the eyes are huge and white as well.

Yes, it looks like a black face cupcake IF you're looking for it...but it's a stretch.

...and I can't believe I just used the term "black face cupcake". o.O

I already said it wasn't intentional...just stupid! You can't tell me that they don't look like black face.

[deleted account]

Laura, I know about 'black face' the UK had shows where people painted their faces black and acted in a stereotypical way. I just don't see why the ad is racist, they are advertising chocolate glaze, hence the icing being brown, and as for the cake base being 'white' - they needed the glaze to stand out as that is what they are trying to sell - it wouldn't have stand out if the cake and the glaze were both chocolate, all I see is a singing cake, which I assume would be to signify that by using the glaze it funks your cakes up a little.

I don't get it.

*edit* oh, because the icing was chocolate...and cocoa is brown and not white?

I think you underestimate foreigners knowledge of your history Laura.

But come on...it's chocolate icing. I didn't really think it even looked like black face at all. Just looked like some cartoon cupcakes singing a stupid song.

Take note Nabisco - never make your Oreos sing in a commercial. Chocolate baked goods with faces = not allowed.

"I don't see any benefit if they were, not to mention it would only cause backlash."

That's why I don't think it's intentional...just stupid.

I know what "black face" is and I still don't see that as trying to copy that image. And that image is so freaking old, I don't see any benefit if they were, not to mention it would only cause backlash.

I think that a lot of people who are not from America wouldn't understand the reference...historically in America, black performers wore "black face" and behaved "clownish" for lack of a better word for the entertainment of white people. It's a long held painful stereo type here...and here's a picture so you can see the comparison they are talking about with the cupcakes...it might make it a little clearer.

http://media.photobucket.com/image/black...

Do I think it was intentional? no...do I think it was stupid? you betcha! I can't believe that NOBODY in that advertising agency or marketing department caught that...even if it was outsourced to another country that didn't know, it still would've been approved by the Americans if it is being played there.

"Knee-jerking spontaneous combustion..."

yes xD

that ad was slightly creepy and that was totally techno, not hip-hop. but cute anyway. not racist at all. people are ridiculous.

EDIT: oh, and glaze? wtf? who "glazes" cupcakes? gimme some real frosting!!

If anyone should be offended by this ad, it's good cupcakes. I bet these Duncan Hines ones taste like crap. Somewhere out there is a delicious cupcake waiting to find a home. :(

It is funny! They do kind of look "blackish" But only if some nitwit were to point it out. They pulled the commercial. You can only see it on youtube.

That has got to be the stupidest ad ever.. That's the kind of ad i'd mute if it came on TV... Oh yeah, because it's so hard to melt actual chocolate and add a bit of icing sugar, vanilla and butter/margarine and milk.. Stupid ad, stupid product and stupid people thinking it's racist..

Ummm...it's singing cupcakes with chocolate icing...If someone finds that racist, they are looking too hard and need to find a hobby. Wow.

[deleted account]

I passed the link along to mother's group I belong to! These girls get a kick out of this stuff! OMG my son asked to see the video again! NO....it's bedtime!! (Plus a friggin annoying video!)

[deleted account]

Are they coming out with a marshmallow fluff KKK version with red licorice swastikas too?! I mean, hey, we need equity among racism! BTW, I called Matthew over to watch the video of "singing cupcakes" and he subjected me to watching it 4 times @@ because it was so funny.

Hahaha. People really are looking for racism in everything. It would be racist to make only white cupcakes and baby dolls and blah blah blah, because let's face it THERE ARE PEOPLE WITH DARK SKIN IN THE WORLD.
