Rant !Why do parents name their children bad names such as ghetteo or white trash names?

Janessa, I live here in Africa and I can tell you that the names that the people here give their kids would confuse most people and then make you look twice especially if you don't live here. Those of us who where born here know better anyway, we get more laughs from the way the Europeans and the American, black, white, indian or other try to pronounce the names especially the traditional ones. and yes they have lovely meanings but then again most don't go by there African names and prefer their second name which is usually European who wants to hear their name butchered by someone who can't speak their language. We have Christmas, Innocentia, Present, Gift, and I kid you not Praise-God. The African Language is very diverse and has many dilects and in each language the meaning can change. If you think that Jack, John, Henry, Samatha, Alice are all common. Then come to South Africa and see how many Siphos, Thembas, Lenas you will meet. .

Its not about being in a "Ghetto" or "White Trash" names its about the prefrance of the person and in which part of the world you are in and whether it is being pronounced correctly.

Alexandria, what do you classify as a "professional name"? Do you mean to imply that everyone should use classic names, and that there is no room for unique names?
As for the teasing, I doubt that my parents ever thought that my friends and I would go through a phase of spelling our names backwards, which resulted in me still being called Ah Satan 15 years later. Yes that is really what you get when you spell Natasha backwards. It makes me laugh, now, and then I remember the greif that I got from my friends. Also, if you are going to go with thinking of reasons for kids to be teased, don't forget to look at thier initals. For example, mine are NRD (sound them out and they are nerd, which I am), my husbands are MAD. But that doesn't change the fact that we both like our names.

Why can't people just give their children Professional names? Dont set your child up for failure. Think about the things people may tease you for with that name, you dont want your child to be teased in school.

I also think my next tattoo will have something to do with Dali. Maybe the swan reflecting elephant on my side? I dunno. Guess I don't need to think about that for at least another 7-8 months :(

We named our daughter Michaela. There's been a few geniuses that tell us that there is no such name, it's supposed to be spelled Mikayla and we've just added an A to the name Michael which is wrong. I just laugh at their ignorance and continue on loving my daughter's very old-fashioned name and the spelling of it.

If we have a son, I really would love to name him after my grandfather, Thor. God of Thunder. Too cool. But my husband isn't having any of it. He wants to name him after a cheese. I guess it is his turn.

We named our son Moses. Most people say that is a black or native Canadian name.
He is the poster boy for caucasian. ;)
I knew someone named Moses in my childhood who was a really fantastic guy and everyone I asked who had met someone named Moses said that "he was a great guy", so we chose Moses.

Wanna know something? I very much dislike the name Dominic. I would never name my child Dominic. Does that mean your son has a bad name? Nope, it's just not to MY taste. Just because something isn't to YOUR taste, doesn't mean it's bad.
My kids names are Ariana and Brayden. I LOVE these names, but some people in my family weren't really in love with them. Didn't stop me. I liked them. My husband liked them. That's all that matters. If the child grows up and absolutely hates the name they were given, they can change it.

So I have an issue with calling names "ghetto" and '"white trash". Labelling them doesn't make it right. Yes, some names are out there, but so are some family traditions when it comes to naming kids. In my family, the first boy in every second generation is supposed to be names John (spelled that way) Johnstone. Really, John Johnstone that's mean, but it is tradition. And my dad's middle name is Athol, try saying that three times fast.
And we named our son Seth Ryder, not common, but not uncommon. And yes, both names have meaning, especially Ryder, as it is the middle name of my friend who passed away when I was in high school. We were going to name him Dackota, also not "normal". With the baby that's on the way the names have been narrowed down to Kai Nolan or Aururoa Anne. Also not normal.

From one of the best books ever, and I love it. But I was going to go with Harper for a girl or boy. Husband doesn't like it. Next baby will be Gabriel or Jacey. I hope those aren't white trash. =)

When I had him nuetered they wrote Satin on the chalkboard on the intake list. They couldn't bear to think my little fluffball could be a tiny, furry, evil Lord of Darkness.

What I've always found a bit odd in my opinion is when parents name their kids after gods/goddesses. To be it is as odd to name a child Isis as it would be to name them Jesus. I just don't get it. And who would name their girl Persephone? That's just asking for trouble,lol

When I was in the army cadets I knew someone with the last name Holder, and he was a private, lol. Private holder.



I gave my children strong, fairly common names but spelled them in a way that will get them misspelled most of their lives: Nathanael and Madeleine. I spelled them the way I did because they were named after people with those spellings, not to be cute or unique. Not that there is anything wrong with cute and unique. I am cute and unique and I am awesomesauce!

Janessa, I never said your name is "not the best". I actually like your name. I was just saying that your name is also uncommon like some of the other girls here. I think the reason things are considered "ghetto" and "white trash" is because people keep using those terms. Do I hear some names and automatically think they must be attached to a black person? Sure. But "ghetto" never comes to mind. And my brother's name is William Robert. Some of his friends call him Billy Bob but he's not white trash so....a name is sometimes just a name. They usually have meaning because the parents give it meaning, and I think we should concentrate on THAT meaning, instead of negative stereotypes.

Well I have 2 middle names picked out for when I do have a little boy. I already said this in my own post but I'll say it in here. If I have a boy his middle names will be Sterling Jack. Sterling is a family name, my great grandfather's for one. My dad's name is Manchy. Yes that's right. Manchy which is also a family name.

A friend of mine judges dance competitions in the southern USA. He had to pronounce a girl's name from a sheet and had a major pause and had to ask how it was properly pronounced...because he didn't want to embarrass her. She confirmed it was pronounced the way it was spelled, Shitonya. That's right, SHIT-on-ya. No jokes people.

My sister has two boys, Griffin and Phoenix, I love those names as they fit the boys SO well! Come February I will have 3 daughters, Jaelyn, Aurora and Dalilah, I love these names too.

I personally think that even if every person in the world named their kid whatever was on the top ten most popular names list for any given year, then at least 3 or 4 of those names would be discriminated against somehow just like some unusual or "black" names are now.

In my area, if you're named Ashley, Brittany, Megan or Rachel, you're a stuck up bitch, that's just first impression based off of a name. Why? Probably because we only have maybe 10 non-white people in my town, and I don't think any of them have "black" or "mexian" or "asian" names, they all have "white" names like James or Lisa or what have you. If not one type of name, it would be another...to each their own, I have no problem with any names unless it's durogatory.

I had a guy I went to school with named Tripp. I never thought it was that unusual. I have known 2 people named Jace, and even have a friend named Remington (which for those of you who don't know, is a brand name for a gun.) But the way I look at it, it's not my kid, so it's not my business. I don't make fun of people's name because I do know how that feels, I was made fun of because of my last name. It's not a child's fault that parents name them names that are different.

Joy B I know my name is not the best. I had a great name but my adoptive mother did not like my name or my siblings names from Haiti I guess she dislike french sounding names . My name is unusal but it not like i am made fun of it because of the name many people like it but i do not. Anyways my name never has stop my from getting jobs compared to those named i have mentioned people. So if research says ceratins names that sound ghetteo might not have jobs because emlpoyers toss the resumes away then parents need to step up and gave their children better names.

After i posted this thread I did some research. The main reason why because majority of them think that it relates to their african roots lol. Oh my my african girlfriends have a laugh because those are in no way real african names lol. I mean do you see people from caribbean, latin america and south america naming their kids ghetto names. I have the similar roots to those black americans having lots our roots but if those people going to be real name their kids african names they need to do research instead of making it harder on those black kids.

i do agree with pretty much everyone, yes it is each to their own and yes people should put a little more thought into names sometimes, i have known a Q'Dell, Kerosene (pronounced kiera-sarnie but spelt very wrong) and T-Jay (the T was just a t, didn;t stand for anything) , really people write the kids name down on an envelope and post it to your self and see what a prospective employer sees....people say you should form stereo types but it is really hard not to....

Yes there are names which I associate with certain things - names of people I have known always have strong links with that person, however, just because I don't like a name or have a certain mental image of it I would never tell someone the name they have chosen is rubbish because they like it and it is all down to personal choice.

Personally I like traditional but uncommon names, which is why I chose Ethan for my son, then I realised half the UK had chose the name as well (but it was uncommon when I chose it lol). Oh well.

Tara on a tangent, I honestly don't know how you have managed to name so many children, I am struggling with my second's name, it's a good job I have 6 months to decide :-)

I love uncommon names. However my last name is Smith so I really didn't want them to have the same name as a million others. My sons are Cian (key-an), Cameron, and the one in Feb will be Kelton. I got a lot of grief for them but I don't care I fell in love with them the first time I heard them and I love the Celtic sounding names. To each his own but I do wish some parents would think. In my life I have known a Rusty Hanes, a Mike Hunt, a Harry Bonner, and a Dick Johnson. My bother always joked that he would name his first son Jack (maiden name is Hoff) but his didn't :)
