I don't like rap. While I can appreciate the lyrics in some, I think mostly it appeals to the lowest common denominator - sex, drugs and violence. But I don't think they should be censored. People chose what they, and their children, listen to, and there are 'clean' versions on the radio.
My dislike for rap though is also just because I don't like the sound. I'm a rock girl through and through :-p

I just moved out of AL, and as I'm gradually exposed to different variations, i love hip hop more and more.

As my son grows up, I hope to gradually introduce him to a wide variety of music on a level that is appropriate for his maturity. I happen to think those Kids Bop cd's are great and Motown and classic rock will probably be permanent fixtures in his life. If he wants to listen to rap, I will be listening to the music he gets with him the first time through, to make sure it is not outright vulgar. If it's really bad, I probably won't allow it, at least until he reaces a certain age or maturity level. And when (if!) he starts driving, there will be rules about the type of music he's allowed to play on the stereo- we shouldn't subject others to something they might not want to hear in a space where they can't get away from it, like at a red light.

On the whole, I don't think rappers should be censored, even though I'm utterly disgusted by a lot of it. I'm a visual artist, and I'd hate to think of someone censoring my work because they are offended by the subject. We have to respect the right of others to express themselves, especially when it's in a forum that can be avoided by people who don't want to hear it.

I like some rap - I like the poetry behind rap - REAL rap. Not the... ghettolicious crap that Snoop Dogg and Pharrel come out with now though "drop it like it's hot drop it like its hot" - by the standards of the majority of their lyrics, children in grade 3-4 could write BANGIN rap lyrics.



Tupac, Biggie, Eminem, Eryrah, ODB, D.E.E., Sweatshop Union, Kyprios, even Swollen Members (older albums).. I will listen to them - but it takes the right mood for me to want to listen to it and appreciate it and with some songs I have to spend time reading the lyrics and researching what the song REALLY means before I can give it any real musical value and lyrical credit.



Beats are easy to make if you have the right equipment and programs on your computer and rap doesn't really take advantage of any musical genius some of these guys have.



Pharrel Williams - originally from NERD... he sold out. He IS a musical genius but he laxed off and his music is lazy and boring now.



At least - that's how I feel about rap music.



Rappers - complete other story. Glamorizing gang bangers is lame.

I enjoy some rap and hip hop music. The guys you've listed...Snoop was my favorite for a long time. I still listen to his old stuff more than his new stuff. I like a couple of Eminem songs, but I haven't listened to anything from his new album besides the song we made you..I think that is the title.

Anyway, rap music isn't the only offensive music I listen to, LOL! I'm an adult though, and my kids didn't listen to explicit lyrics until they were in jr high. My husband has always listened to heavy metal, hard rock, and classic rock, and when the kids were younger I asked him to please not listen to it in front of the kids. I just got myself out of the habit of listening to it when they were younger. BUT now that they are teenagers...we are jamming to a lot of the same bands! And we love going to concerts together!

I am the mom who made her kids listen to 80s music and like it Sharon! haha

Alexis and I love to do duets and our fave song to duet with.....Bodies!

I'm in the minority here. I never cared for rap or hip hop. I'm stuck in the hair bands of the 80's! Hard core, heavy metal, classic rock anything ranging from Def Leppard, Bon Jovi (I grew up 20 minutes from him) to Iron Maiden to Manowar and everything in hard, heavy, or power ballad in between. Yup....that's me! Throw in some Lep Zep & Pink floyd and I'm happy :-)

I also go through stages in music. For a good while I listened to rap a lot, but lately have been in a rock mood... My husband will play rap occassionally and I only tell him to change it when the song says "nigger" as I feel it would be too difficult to explain that to a 3 year old! Sure I could simply say "don't use that word" or whatever, but I'm super up front with my children and would like him to know more specifically then "that's a bad word that we don't use" I want him to know WHY we don't use it! And 3 is a little young to comprehend all that is in play there! My neighbor would let her daughter listen to rap and she LOVES to sing to music so when a bad word came up she would have to replace it with a proper word or skip it :) It was always funny listening to her "edited" versions of songs :) I don't think we should censor rappers more then the radio or TV does with everything. If you don't like the music don't play it :)

I love rap and R&B music :) I do agree that some of it can be a bit crude but I take no offence. I'm not sure that I would let our son listen to most of it but some song I think are ok as long as they are not cussing and talking about women in a foul way. I do however let our son listen to all kinds of R&B and soul music which he loves! He dances and snaps his fingers...It's so darn cute! Both my husband and myself are huge music lovers! I don't think that there is a day that goes by that we don't listen to music :) It's great for the soul!

I tend to go through phases with music. I like all kinds of music, just usually not all around the same time. When I was a teen, all I wanted to listen to was rap for the most part. It depends on what I'm doing and my mood. Rap's not something I usually turn on at home or in the car but if we're out at a bar, it great to dance to during the band breaks! =)

It all depends on the style of rap. I prefer Hip Hop. A Tribe Called Quest, Run-D.M.C, Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli, Cypress Hill---the list could go on and on :) I really can't stand "gangster" rap (Akon, 50 Cent, Lil'Wayne) but I do have respect for some of the artists like Jay-Z and Timbaland who produce quality music.



Working in a music store...I see WAYYYY to many mothers who just don't give a shit what their kids are listening to. We have recommendations we follow and are not allowed to sell CDs with parental advisories to children younger than 12. I think that is reasonable and more mothers should spend the time to listen to the CD before they give it to their kids.

I like it. We listen to it fairly frequently. I frequently ask my kids if they have idea what they're singing about. 99% of the time they have no idea. When they ask me - I explain the lyrics. Frequently about pot and we almost never listen to the songs about some guy banging someone. (even though one of those is really my fav for its catchy beat).



No rappers don't have to be censored. Its their art. I do the censoring. We frequently buy "clean" singles from walmart online.
