Short hair or long hair?

Well this debate all started when my best friend (male) and I were discussing Sienna Miller and her acting as Edie Sedgwick. To which he replies, “Well she has a nice body, kinduv an old face for her age but I don’t like short hair on chicks… a lot of guys don’t.”

Got me thinking, is that true? Do guys not like SHORT hair on girls regardless of physique and face? I started asking some of my other boys and as a whole they primarily all responded in a similar fashion. That yes, in general – men do NOT like short hair on women.

Supposedly there are always exceptions to the rule (Natalie Portman, Halle Berry etc.) but they are few and far between AND while guys think those chicks are hot, they still contend that they would be “hotter” still if they had long locks.

Just thought this was interesting and worth posting about. The irony is when women talk amongst each other we generally think, “Oh sure Suze, cut your hair it’s so long and drab. It’s way cuter short.” Oops! Not that I think that women should conform completely to a mans idea of sexy but again, pretty interesting to consider.

Don't know about other men, but my husband likes my hair. It was his idea that I cut it off.

Well I had it all, long and now short. Why well I was sick of the pony tail... yep It was always up, I just did not have the time to curl it and it took forever to dry it. So finally I went short, past my ears but just that. I like that I can wake up, take a shower and look nice and polished in minutes!

I admit I use to feel more sexy with my long hair and I do miss it sometimes but not long long...just at or past my shoulders is as long as I will ever go again.

I have to say I no longer feel the need to look sexy with my hair, my hubby loves me not to matter what. I am sure he liked my long hair better but he never says so. I guess I am at a time in my life where I want to do it for me. I am not as much into my looks as I use to be.

After going through chemo and being bald and almost dieing....I realize life is too short to spend loads of time on my hair. I just don't want to do it anymore. I suppose if I did not have toddler running around and young adult kids driving me crazy and had the time...I might do it. But it just is not a priority and the pony tail never looked polished enough for me, at least now I don't have many bad hair days!

Oh i so eat my words about Emma..i googled her name.I love her hair..not at first though when it was very tight cut.I like how she styles it.I love the side parting on her.Don't like it slicked back.Overall its more mature and fashionable on her.Shes very pretty with it..makes her facial feature more striking.

OMG I think Emma watson looks awesome with her pixie cut , she has the perfect , feminine facial features to pull it off .....I think her long hair made her look dowdy and boring but her pixie makes her look sophisticated , edgy yet girly at the same time IMO.

Natalie portman didnt suit it though .

For me i thought the girl from Harry potter, Natalie Portman and Victoria Beckham did NOT wear the short pixie cut well at all. There very attractive women and i think long hair or even medium long is so much better on them.
I have sen many in my town not wear it well either.I think its seeing a short cut on the wrong face shape puts men/women off the cut too.My man just rathers the long hair regardless.lol:-)

I think it's just a matter of trend and taste. It's fashionable these days to have long hair parted on the side. I myself, have always had long hair. But I know lots of women that look very nice and "sexy" with short hair.

I find most men prefer long hair. I think I've heard mention of studies about it.

Personally, I always wished I had the face and body to pull off short hair, it just looks bad on me. I have my father's square Germanic jaw and the short hair look rather manish. Not to mention, I find if I'm a bit heavier, I look even heavier...because my face is kind of wider looking. Altogether not a good look for me.

No question, long hair lets a lady look more fem.

Maybe one day, I'll have to guts to chop it all off again, but man it looked bad when I did. I'm just lucky it grows fast!

My husband is fine either way. I normally have mine inbetween. I love it really long but my hair is really really really thick.. It causes me to have severe headaches. At one point it was all one length and I chopped it all off. The hair stylist weighed it 22lbs. That is the best diet I have ever been on. LOL

I have never known a man who liked short hair on women...not to say they don't exist :) I have long curly hair because it is healthier and curls better when long...plus short hair makes me look like a boy. So I do it for me. It just happens to make my husband happy too!

I like my hair long and my ex liked it short so i used to keep it just long enough for a pony tail but now i am growing long just the way i like it. Not so long that i can't do anything with it but long enough that when it's out it looks awesome! I love my long hair it makes me feel so much nicer about myself.

I never had any shortage of suiters when my hair was really short however, but I had a great ass too so maybe it balances out? LMniceAO

I only like my hair short when I don't have kids. Other than that I like it long. Short gets in my eyes and is just annoying to me. I do love my long hair. I feel sexier. My husband sure loves it long. I would rather please my husband with my hair than my friends. Just how I am.

Everything I do with my life is my choice. but, I don't know. Seems selfish to chop my hair in defiance or something. There are all kinds of things my husband does to make me happy. I can't have long hair because he loves it? Besides, I actually think my hair short takes more time and more work to fix. I can make it look really cute really fast when it's long.

I have been seriously considering hacking all my hair off because I'm bored of it and it's definitely got my husband freaked out. So I asked him "Really, is the tangled know of a ponytail I wear everyday THAT much more attractive than boy short hair?" He can't even explain it. Still not going to stop me from doing it. I think he'll like it when he sees it.

My DH and all of his friends were asked this and they all agree. Women should have at least shoulder length hair because quit frankly they don't want to look at the back a woman's head, for any reason, and see it short. It makes them think "dude".

My hubby's never know me with short hair. He says he doesn't want me to ever cut it short but i think if i did he wouldn't mind because he likes my neck, I think hes more scared of change or the unknown. I remember when i cut my hair really short in year 9, it was shaved up the back and sort of a bob on top and my brother cried when he saw my long hair gone hahaha.

When my sister's hair was long, her husband said he hated short hair. When she had a dye job turn out badly & her attempt to "fix" it made it worse, she cut it off, short--really short! Husband's response? "I hate long hair." I have always kept my unruly hair short, but when the kiddos came along, for the first few years, I always put off doing for myself. As a result my hair got long. My husband claimed to love it. I hated it! It was frizzy, heavy and made me look old & saggy-faced. When I went back to school, I began cutting my hair short again. First to the shoulders, then to just below my chin, then to my jawline. Now I have an "old lady butch cut". What did my hubby say? "You look great!" I think what men say they are attracted to in "a woman" & what men are truly attracted to in "their woman" are two different things.

I had my hair short up until I finished college, but now I like having it long. It is a lot of work, but when it's done, it feels great. It goes just below my shoulders, which for me is very long. One day, I'll probably go back to short, but not now.

I know my hubby prefers long hair. He doesn't even like short hair on Halle Berry which boggles my mind because I think she looks way way better. In fact, I find short hair attractive on many women, so we'll just have to agree to disagree on that. When I'm done with the long hair, I will cut it no matter what he's got to say about it. And then I'll allow him to shave off his beard, which I like him better with too. That's sort of our deal, I keep the hair & he keeps the beard.

I just don't get having a hairstyle because your partner says so , I can not imagine Jamie ever suggesting I wear my hair some way because he likes it , he has seen SO many hairstyles on me but like he always says " I love you no matter what " :)

@ Katherine: I embrace my heritage a lot more now, but when I was growing up there was a stigma to the Native American population. There still is, you notice it when you go up around the reservation--cashiers and waiters will be smuggish, they won't put change directly in my hand, but they will put it in my husband's hand. They don't look me in the eye or say "Please" and "Thank you" but they do to my husband. It is off putting. That said, I have never experienced any thing like that in the area where I live now, and people here are very accepting, and actually interested in learning about the culture. It is amazing the difference a few miles can make!

It's funny that you say American's are so plain looking b/c I always thought that they were cool b/c they are so diverse--red hair, blue eyes, blond hair, etc. Almost all the people in my tribe have brown eyes and very dark, straight hair...

I have had hair down to my ass, I've been bald, and everything in between. I found that most of my guy friends prefer it somewhere in the middle, not too short, not too long. Somewhere just south of the shoulders lol. I prefer longer hair on me (but every couple of years I get pissed off and chop it off above my shoulders. But I am a style chameleon so I can pull it off lol. Now lately I've been thinking about growing out my bangs and holy hell are people against that idea! Guys and girls :P
I actually use to have a bunch of wigs, so I could switch my styles whenever I felt like it, but my boss lost her hair to chemo so I gave them to her. I still love wigs tho.

From what I'm reading, what I consider long (to my shoulders) is considered short to some of you ladies.

I always try to grow out my hair, but then I get bored and chop it off. It's fine but thick so I can't do much with it. Now it's to my shoulders and it's a frizzball so I'm getting close to chopping it off again, but my hair stops growing once it hits my shoulder blades, so i could never grow it any longer anyway.

Kelly - posted on 01/03/2011

I have always worn my hair very short in an asymmetric bob or pixie cut. Right now, I am growing it out for the first time in years--I hated it between my chin and shoulders, so I got extensions to bring it down below my shoulders. I just got the last set out and my natural hair is about 4 inches below them now. My husband loves it--he likes to see my neck, so I either push it back with combs or pull it up. There is not much I can do with it layer wise, it is almost solid black and perfectly straight all the time. Even if I curl it, the curl won't stay more than an hour or so. It is also very fine and thin.

My husband likes my hair short too (but he hated the "mid-length" just like I did), but I can tell he loves the long length a lot more--he comments on how beautiful it is every day! Which I love :)

I liked short cuts because they made me look "whiter" and less "Indian" and I felt like they fit my personality more--I'm rather small and "sharp" as my husband puts it, but he loves that about me. The long hair makes me look very Native American, it accentuates my cheek bones and nose a lot more, and I swear my skin looks darker, but I've got to be imagining that. I used to try very hard to look "whiter" but my husband says he loves my Native American looks....who knew :P

I had always had very long hair, usually long enough that I could sit on it, and it's naturally auburn.

I've been with my husband for 14 years, since I was 16, so he had gotten pretty used to the hair and I wanted to do something different that would be easy to look after and maybe surprise the old man a bit, so.... I had it cropped into a short a-line bob and dyed it fluorescent pink!

My husband was totally shocked, but when he got over the initial reaction he loved it. I asked him what he would have said if I'd asked him first and he said "noooooooooo!" But he was really glad I did it without telling him first as he loves it. He says I look cute and edgy, younger and it suits me so well I should have been born with a pink crop.

I thought that maybe he was just being nice, but once the kids were in bed he showed me he genuinely did find the new look sexy....:P

My husband likes my hair short because it doesn't get into his mouth or all over the house. I cut off 14in when I was prego with my second. I'm tempted to do it again cuz it's just so straight and blah. But I love being able to pull it up into a pony tail.

I wish I could have both (with out a wig) and just pick and choose depending on how I feel that day.

I just got 8 inches chopped b/c it NEEDED it ( I also dye my hair, so every now and then I just have to whack the really dry shit off) and even after cutting 8 inches off,it's still @ my bra strap in the back.....too short for me though.

My hair has been really long, down to my bum, and mid length, the shortest I have ever cut my hair is to the bottom of my chin - with shorter layers. I like my hair is best when it is just between my shoulders and chin as I can still put it up off my face (when it is bugging me) but it has nice movement in it. I think my face is the wrong shape for me to go too short, which is one of the reasons I stick to mid-length. My hair is really thick though so I do have to have it thinned when it is shorter to stop it looking like a giant bush on my head (I have lots and lots of fine hair hence the thickness).

I think it completely depends on the woman as to whether longer or shorter suits her, her personality is really important as well, not just her looks and face shape.

I've had my head shaved (and it is empowering) all the way to my hair down to my butt. I personally prefer it just above the shoulder, on me. It was cute when it was a pixie cut, my husband loved it and if we both liked it, that's all that matters to me but, in the long run, I like it around shoulder length.

I have heard plenty of men say they like long hair on women, that's just because they have some fantasy about it, they'll take it any way they can get it in the end. :P

I always think I want long hair until it starts to get long and it just hangs there and looks like shit and drags my face down. I can remember my Dad getting mad at my Mum for cutting her hair short, and I do think that most men prefer long hair, but I don't think that means they can't find a woman with short hair sexy as well. I kind of prefer my hair at shoulder length and so does Brian - it's long enough to tie back so it's not in the way when I'm gettin' busy if ya know what I mean ;) Plus he likes it when I curl it and try to look all smokin' hot - when it's too long it doesn't hold a curl as well.

Lindsay - posted on 01/03/2011

I've had my hair both ways but I do prefer it long. I have pretty thick hair and it seems to do better for me longer. I did get it cute about 4 inches right before Christmas and it's about shoulder length right now and I'm really loving that. The thing for me is more so a good cut instead of the actual length. If my hair isn't layered right, it's not going to look good. I don't think that anyone looks good without some layering. It adds much needs shape and softness.

In general, I think most guys prefer longer hair on a woman. But I don't think it's a big enough deal to most guys either that they'd leave someone over a hair style. Now maybe they wouldn't initially approach a woman if her hair was horrid, but I'd say it's mostly not a big deal.

In my experience, men like your hair to look the same length as it was when they were first attracted to you. I've had boyfriends who LOVED a pixie cut on me, and sure enough, I had a pixie cut when we met. I've also had boyfriends who loved long hair on me, and upon seeing pictures of me with a pixie cut, hated it, and sure enough, I had long hair when we met.

When my husband and I met, my hair was long, red and curly. I've had it quite short, and he didn't complain, but I knew he liked it longer. I did grow it longer for me, though, not for him. And I still wear it straight more often than not, just because it's easier -- although once in awhile, to treat him, I'll let my natural curls do their thing. :)
