Just thought I'd share.. An old friend from school posted a picture of a tattoo he got with his baby girl's name.. It was a big rose with leaves on one side and had vines coming out from the side. In between the vines it had his daughter's name and at the end of her name there was her actual footprint tattooed. It was huge but it looked really neat.

Thank-you for all your help I have decided on a pink and white lily (my fav flower) with Ethan entwined around the stem and leaves, with a few stars around the flower part - he is my little star.

I like the notion of the Celtic symbol for mother, BUT make sure you are completely aware of what the symbol actually is. Do you ever wonder if the Chinese ideograms people have on their bodies actually mean what they think they do? LOL - I would. How about a flower, emerging from the ground to symbolize the child you have emerging into life - perhaps his or her name. Names could be added as children afre born.

@Iris...unusual, it's usually a stillborn tattoo i've seen a lot of women and even myself have footprints of still born children tattooed on them

Yeah, portraiture is VERY tricky. You want to go to someone who's done a bazillion of them and whose portfolio knocks your socks off. Get references, if possible. I've seen some sad-looking portrait tattoos in my time, which is why I'd never risk it.

@Sarah.. First of all, I never said it was a boy. How would you know if it was a boy? Second of all, I don't care WHY she got it, the baby resembled Chucky.

Oh.. If you want to get a portrait of your baby inked on your skin, make sure you go to one damn good artist. A coworker of mine at my old job had one of her baby that passed away.. It did not look good, but I didn't have the heart to tell her under the circumstances, seeing as I wasn't close to her at all.

WELL... My husband got a tattoo just over a year ago with our son's name in it.



It's a tree of life and in the trunk it has 'Liam' "carved" into it. It's really neat. It goes from just above his hip bone to almost halfway up his ribs and takes up pretty much his entire left side. He has 6 other tattoos and he said that was the most painful b/c part of it was on his ribs. He was also looking at angels and stuff, but he couldn't find a picture of the kind he wanted and nobody could sketch one that he fell in love with, so we went with our second idea, the tree. It actually turned out really neat. Even my mom liked it, and she doesn't like tattoos. Maybe I can upload a picture for you if you want to use that idea?



If you do go that route, though, make sure it's what you really want b/c to be able to do the name in the trunk, it has to be BIG.

I like the idea of the celtic symbol for mother with your childs name and birthday scrolled into the design.
Or your childs zodiac sign overlaid with your own.
If you want to keep with the animal kind of theme, perhaps a baby panther?

I saw the most beautiful tattoo I've ever seen about a year ago. This woman had her son tiny infant footprints on her shoulder blade and underneath was his name and birth date.

For my dayghter, I have on my left arm, the chinese symbol for her zodiac sign as well as her plant, which is the lily coloured in the zodiac colour, which also happens to be her fave colour...purple.

I also have a painting done of a tiger and a rabbit. Symbolising me and her as I am the year of the tiger and she is the year of the rabbit. I would've got it tattooed, but I liked the fact that everyone sees it when they enter the house.

I have my son's name tattooed on the side of my foot and a star on either side of his name (red at the beginning and blue at the end) I also have a barcode on my left wrist with his date and time of birth (141120092010)

What symbolizes motherhood for you? Is there a song, a story, a poem? Does your son have a favorite toy? Think of things the two of you share, that are expressive of your individual relationship. Even if they don't seem like tattoos, a talented artist can help you create something that is unique and special and individualized with your personal info.

I'm still trying to figure out what I want mine to be. I'm going to wait 'till I'm done having kids, but am contemplating an ornate, heart-shaped padlock, with three keys. The head of each key would be a letter: one with a "K" for my husband", one with an "S" for Sam, and one with whatever initial our future kid has.

It'd be sort of like this one, except the three keys would be attached to the chain:

What's you son's name? Maybe you could have something that represents it, without being too literal?

My kids names are Ivy and Rowan. When I finally save up the cash to pay for the artist I want, I will be having on my inner forearms a Rowan branch with a few berries (to represent the time of year he was born) and and flowering tendril of Ivy ( again to show the time of year she was born). I want them in the delicate style of the water colour sketches you get in old fashioned botanist books, so I know it's going to cost a fortune! :(

Loureen that sounds beautiful. I will choose something personal but I was just hoping for a little inspiration from others - I have some brill ideas now I'm sketching some out to see if I can get a great design. :-)

Im starting my sleeve soon , it will be 5 roses , one for each person in my family , four in full bloom and one an unopened rose bud for the baby we lost , this is symbolic because our son was buried with roses .

Choose something personal to you and your son what does he love , what do you share , does he have a special nickname , Tattoos are very , VERY personal and it should be something close to you and your sons hearts .

I LURVE tattoos. I have a rose on my chest, a scorpian on my shoulder and a tribal heart on my neck and shoulders. I am going to have another one but I am not sure what of yet. My advice would be to window shop as MUCH as possible before making a decision.

If you want new ones, you could do a bunch of paw prints that wrap around your body that lead to the panther. You could make it start with colors on your shoulder, slowly going darker down your back and side to black paws below the panther. Then you will have color, and you can have your childs name integrated into the paw prints or shadowing under / between the paw prints... it will add color, be a new tat but also pull both of your tattoo's together.

Why don't you get panther paw prints walking down away from the feet of the panther on your back and you could get your childs name following along the paw prints........... or something along those lines.


I'm obsessed with lizards and snakes, my plan is to get either an anklet or bracelet with lizard paw / claw / tail print with my sons name interwined with the prints.

If I don't get the anklet or bracelet, I will be getting a lizard crawling up my leg and I will get the paw/claw/tail print down twirling around my leg with his name interwined with that instead.
