Disorder link with teenage texting

A study into modern communication and young people has identified several new disorders linked to texting on mobile phones.

Researchers say teenagers who text their friends excessively could develop one of the new disorders, News Ltd newspapers reported on Wednesday.

Jennie Carroll, a Melbourne technology researcher with RMIT University, says she discovered the four disorders while studying the effects of modern communication.

She says teenagers who text too much could find themselves suffering from:

- Textaphrenia: thinking you've heard or felt a new text message vibration when there is no message.

- Textiety: a feeling of anxiety from not receiving or sending any text messages.

- Post-traumatic text disorder: injuries related to texting, such as walking into objects by not paying attention to your surroundings.

- Binge texting: sending massive amounts of texts to build self-esteem among peers.

Is this as big a load of crap as I think it is? Or is it a way that our teens can actually blame everyone but themselves for their issues? Why is it that there seems to be this compelling need to put some stupid medical label on EVERYTHING??

lol. I run into things without texting, walls, sofas, so on. I also fall down at random. It it really doesn't have anything to do with texting. I am a klutz. I've embraced it.

The feeling the phone vibrate though.. yeah. All the time. Constantly checking it.

Post-traumatic text disorder: injuries related to texting, such as walking into objects by not paying attention to your surroundings.....

Formally known as "watch the fuck where you're going, you moron" ... if only I had a mobile to blame for the numerous injuries I sustained from walking into lamp posts!

Great to see our education tax dollars at work, isn't it Erin? Groundbreaking research like this will just show the world how wonderfully advanced our researchers are.....NOT!!

Doctor, doctor, I keep running into things when I am texting on my mobile phone.

Doctor: Well, you hurt yourself because you're just fucking stupid.

Nope I can see why they had to give it a name....

Doctor: Well, you have post traumatic text disorder.

I'm sorry, this just cracks me up.....

There is ALREADY a label for most of those things. It's "stupidity". Especially the one about walking into things because you're not looking. And "binge texting" is "personalized SPAM"! And a TON of people have thought they heard/felt their phone when it wasn't going off. With all the different ring tones and vibrations and stuff, a lot of things can sound like that.

No, it was the results of an actual study by this person.

I couldn't find the actual study, but I suspect if it is new it hasn't been published yet, this was possibly just issued in summary as a press release to promote some conference or other.

They are dead serious. I think it is ridiculous to give these things medical labels!!! And yes, I do think it trivialises real disorders.

Proven just by the stupid use of 'text' in each disorder name that it's a huge joke.

I'll admit if my phone is on vibrate and I throw it in my pocket, I let it ring ;)

Really , it was just on the news that children should be discouraged from talking on their mobiles and encouraged to text , damned if you do damned if you dont :D

Well I think it's crap. Except that I will admit that if I put my phone on vibrate & throw it in my pocket I keep thinking it's vibrating but it's not. Perhaps it's just my electric personality ;-P
