I saw this idea for a "Meditation Jar" and thought, "This is brilliant!". Of course, she's not yet 3, and has no idea what meditation is, so for us, it is The Glitter Jar. We made it together this week. The idea is that she can shake it up herself, and then has to sit still and watch until all of the glitter settles to the bottom. Other than handing it to her, it sort of removes me (typically the offending party) from the equation. It lets her maintain a bit of control, but still serves to redirect her focus, and help her calm down.
We took a jelly jar, and put in about a tablespoon of glitter glue. Next, we added about 1 cup of warm water, and about 3 drops of food coloring. We then added some loose glitter (silver works well, since it really shows up in the colored water). Finally, we added some more clear Elmer's glue, to thicken the water a bit. Some of the recipes I came across recommended glycerin, but I didn't have any of that, nor did I want to go looking for it. I think corn syrup might work as well, but we didn't have that either. Put the lid on, and we had our "Glitter Jar".
