Thoughts?

This mother is very confusing for her daughter. First she says eat healthy, then gives her pizza for a snack, then one time she says no cupcakes, they're crap, then the next time, just one is ok. What is this kid suppose to think? Sure, the kid lost 16 lbs, but it's probably due to the stress of not knowing *what* to eat! I feel like this mother should probably have sat down with the doctor or a dietician away from the daughter and learned about healthy eating habits, and the daughter also should have had an age appropriate conversation about making healthy choices. I feel sorry for the kid, but I also wonder the doctor must think reading this article she's written and reading about what this mother is doing to her child.

That was a sad story, to say the least. The daughter sounded wiser than her mother.



I think the doctor should have realized that a 7 year old is not obese unless there are eating/exercise problems in the home. The doctor, should have considered this and referred this family to a dietitian.



Everything I have read says that it is dangerous to put kids on a weight loss diet. If they are overweight or obese (defined as 20% above your ideal weight) then they should go on a maintenance diet, so as not to gain more weight, until they are at an acceptable weight.

OK... just looked at the pic and article. It said 93 pounds. She doesn't look it at all though. I am about that weight at 4'11"....

4'4" and 113 pounds?! Wow. My girls are about 4'6" and 65 and 67 pounds. Granted, my kids pretty much have no fat, but this kid is shorter and about the weight of the two of them put together! That, too me, is horrifying. Poor girl! :(

I think the Mom is more to blame for the child's weight that the child. Most 7 YOs don't do their own grocery shopping. Maybe Mom needs to clear out the cabinets instead of harping on her child.

My guess is that at the end of the book she finds her way and figures out a way to encourage a healthy lifestyle for both her and her child.



And as for "throwing around the term obese" casually...most of us actually don't use the term obese until the person in question is morbidly obese.

I think it's being marketed in the most extreme possible manner. I don't see anything particularly horrible here. She admits to making mistakes but how is that different from any other of us? More important than anything this woman needs to understand that gyros and pizza are meals not snacks...but she also appears to talk about her own issues with eating.



Marketing...I love it and hate it at the same time.

I think, Happy Mama, you are thinking of the term "obese" in the casual, everyday way people throw that verb around when eyeballing a very large person in the mall or something. The mother in the story and the docs are all going by the technical category based on BMI that is obese. There is no emotion attached to the clinical term of obese, it is just a classification not some insult thrown out by a doc randomly.



I do think the mom needs help to deal with her own body issues and compulsive eating. Her rhetoric about her daughter is just her own feelings about her own body projected onto her innocent daughter and that sucks big time for the little girl.

I fully agree with you that the models out there now are horrifyingly skinny, and often look sick. That is not health. But I do think that another 16 lbs on that small frame would make that little girl quite overweight and if I were her mother, I would be working on getting her more exercise and a healthier diet. I would be concerned that she was being set up for health issues down the road.



I think our society is twisted about weight to the extremes. Not recognizing the difference between healthy size and over or under weight. We are skewed in both directions. But in daily life, we are getting so used to seeing so many overweight children that we are not recognizing it for the problem that it is. We are setting our kids up for a lifetime of struggle.

I agree with you about the mother's handling of the situation but I am sorry, even with another 16 pounds on that kid she is in NO WAY obese. At least in my opinion but in this day in age when size 00 models are consider beautiful, when in fact they look disgustingly sick, I shouldn't be shocked that a healthy sized girl is called fat.

You are suggesting that the child could not have been obese, are you not? I am pointing out that although she looked healthy in the photo, on a frame that small, an extra 16 lbs would have put her close to being obese.



I do NOT like the way the mother handled it. Especially not writing about it publicly. Her daughter deserves more sensitivity, care and concern for her health rather than her looks.

The child was 4 ft 4 inches. If she was 113 lbs at her top weight she would have had a BMI of 29.4 which is on the border between overweight and obese.

Read where it said after she lost 16 pounds. SIXTEEN POUNDS!!!! That still would not make her pleasently plump much less obese!!!! WTH do people consider obese these days, a size 10?

I didn't read the entire article. Read the line that the doctor said the child was medically obese (or words to that effect) then looked at the picture of said obese child and then began to wonder WTF that doctor is smoking! If that child is obese then I am the freaking Hoover Dam!

This woman has severe issues. Her poor daughter is not only going to end up with eating problems. From what I have just read, this girl is going to grow up confused on many things. Her mother has some severe obsession problems, that she really needs to take a look at and be rid of.



Why the hell was her daughter obese in the first place? Ummm, maybe her mother is a RETARD!

wow, yeah, she needs to get her story straight and stick to it instead of swinging back and forth. the poor kid's probably going to have eating problems for the rest of her life. god, teach the kid what's good to eat and make sure that's what she's getting, don't tell her it's bad one day and okay the next!
