Thrush, need advise asap

Milla got a nasty case of thrush at only a few days old (after some heavy duty ABs I was taking following birth). It is a nightmare in newborns so you definitely need to get it sorted before baby comes. Whatever you treat it with (either natural or medicinal - both can work), make sure you are vigilant in treating both of you! It's vital that you apply either the Nilstat or Gentian Violet after each feed or you will just pass it back and forth to each other.

By the by, be careful with the yoghurt. Make sure it has no additives (sugar etc..), otherwise it can make it worse.

As a long time sufferer back in the day, I second the Nystatin liquid. I actually use it on myself. They also give it to people who have autoimmune issues that lead to thrush on the regular.

Sometimes all the diet, probiotics etc. just don't cut it. If you get to that point, a bit of the swishing Nystatin just might kick it.

also, i dont know what sort of diet your baby has, but the thrush virus feeds on sugar and yeast. keeping them to a minimal helps. my mum was against ALL meds when i was a kid. pumped us full of yoghurt and kept us away from the bread (sugar was never in our diet). good luck

J had really really bad thrush when he was younger, we tried all the meds and went to the dr SOOO many times, and then my g/f suggested yogurt (of course the difference is J was like 6 months or so, so hadn't thought to give him yogurt yet..) But cleared it up and he hasn't had a problem with it since

Ok, drs apt today at 1140. My dr is very good with medication hesitant parents :) so I'll ask him about the gentians violet, probiotics etc etc

Go to the link I posted Laura, it will give you all the info you need about how to apply it, how much, how long etc. as well as information about pro biotics in conjunction with Gentian Violet.
If you don't like the idea of "medication" per say, than this is the treatment for you. Has been used for thousands of years to treat thrush.

Gentian Violet. That's what I gave my daughter when she had thrush. She was nursing at the time so I also applied it to my nipples. It is very safe but that purple STAINS so be careful when applying it to him or you! Highly recommend it. Thrush is painful!

Gentian Violet, turns his mouth and your nipples purple but works amazingly well with no side effects to you or your baby in utero. It takes longer to get rid of than it would with a prescription but it does work, you just have to stick to it.

You can get an rx for Nystatin oral swish from your pediatrician and you can also apply it to your nipples. That's what I've given patients before and seemed to be the most effective in the shortest amount of time. Good luck and good for you for nursing both babies!!! ♥



Probiotics are a great idea, too. If there are any Latino markets where you live they usually have this probiotic yogurt drink which comes in an 8 pack of little bottles and they taste great. My kids love them and it's kind of a novelty for them since it comes in the tiny bottles. They have a thin aluminum (I think) top that you can pop a straw through.

I'm actually not going to wean him ever! I will let him wean himself when he grows out of the need. From what I've heard this usually happens between 3-6 years old so I will be breastfeeding both. This way he won't have any reason to be jealous of the new baby since I'm not making him give up anything for her to take over.

I'll see if I can get some yogurt with active cultures in it! Thanks that's a great idea :)

I know natural yoghurt is good for thrush as its chemical eats the bacteria of the thrush away. Mind you getting a two year old to eat natural yoghurt will be difficult.

Do you not think that at 2 years old and with another baby due in 5 weeks that now would be a good time to wean him away from the breast. I know it is a source of comfort for him but he has to stop at some point. This way you will not be putting your new baby that could be born at any time now at risk. Do you intend to breast feed them both. If you try ane wean him now he wont be so jealous of the baby when you do go to wean him later.

Yep, sounds like thrush. I would go to the doctor, it's difficult to get rid of and if you get it in your nipples and pass it onto your newborn you may find you will have problems with latching. Happened to me and my daughter, she ended up having to be on an oral medicine plus a medicated nappy cream and I had to have a cream for my nipples.

It really depends on the strength of the antibiotic.
Flora Baby for kids has a blend of 5 different probiotics which have 4Billion CFU per serving and you can take it up to 3 times a day. Its the best one i found.

I'm giving him the probiotics, but I cant find anywhere a dose? I have regular acidophilus tablets, do you know how much of one I should give him?

Antibiotics always need to be accompanied by probiotics. Or you could end up with an upset in bacteria causing things like thrush or yeast infections.

Stronger probiotics may be necessary to cure the thrush.
