Unrealistic & Irrational Fears

[deleted account] ( 44 moms have responded )

Do you have any unrealistic or irrational fears or phobias?

I have an extreme fear of being sucked into a tornado while driving and have a fear of driving into water and not being able to get out of my car, which is why there is a 'break out kit' inside. I also have the fear of being eaten by a wild animal.

So, how crazy are you? What are your crazy fears?

Sharks. They WILL come get me if I get into the ocean... I actually almost drowned my hubby while we were snorkeling on our honeymoon in Hawaii because I was so scared.

Dinosaurs. Like sharks, they WILL come get me! Jurassic Park gave me nightmares...

Ghosts. They're just creepy and no matter how docile people say they are, there are always the few creepy ones that make it onto tv specials! My hubby doesn't let me watch any ghost hunting shows anymore because I can get so freaked out afterwards. I've actually had a ghost experience before and it was SOOO scary - AND the place I was in got an entire episode of Ghost Hunters - THAT'S how creepy the place is!

Aliens. I have a hard time believing we are alone in the whole cosmos and I think aliens are like sharks and dinosaurs - if they come, they WILL find me!!

Vampires/zombies/warewolves/etc. Yeah... I'm not allowed to watch scary movies any more...

Serial killers. I actually have a friend whose mom was almost killed by a serial killer while she was pregnant with my friend. It ended up being that the mom's friend had a fight with her boyfriend and was sleeping on the couch. She heard the killer break a window and she called 9-1-1, got my friend's mom out of bed and they hid in the closet. The cops came rght away (since the serial killer was kown to be at large) and caught the guy right as he had discovered my friend's mom was no longer in bed.

My mom actually wouldn't let me watch unsolved mysteries (aliens and ghosts) or America's Most Wanted (we were watching one and they said the guy was last seen in a town not far from where we lived - I stayed up ALL night because I was convinced he was in the backyard) when I was a kid because of my irrational fears...

i just thought of one. police cars driving by me when i'm driving. i get soooooo paranoid. i look at the speedometer constantly, if they're behind me, i look in the rearview mirror all the time. i'm afraid to step on the brakes to slow down, in fear the cop will think i'm only doing it so i can stay on the correct speed (although, what the hell else do you do?lol). i seriously think frantically about everything i'm doing when i see one, and it irritates the hell out of me! :)

I fear bugs on my skin. They feel nasty. Creep me out. Putting my face underwater or standing in water deeper than my waist. I don't like the feeling that I can't see what's in the water around me -that something might be behind me. Weird as I used to swim in the ocean as a child with no problems. After watching, The Ring, I can't look at a fading blue screen or white snow on TV.

Stephanie in a plane crash that's a story to tell lucky you to be ok. I have my pilots licence and have crashed a plane before, shut down the air port and everything talk about an adrenaline rush but I'll be doing my best not to make that mistake again. I'd rather jump out of a plane than crash land for a kick.

I have no irrational fears for myself but I can see all the dangers for my children. My son is at uni and I thought he would starve and not feed himself properly, my other son has a motorbike and every time he went out on it I thought he would have an accident. I have learnt over these years to let go of the apron strings a little and my sons know how much I worry about them. They also know I will point out every danger to them just in case! Can't help it!

Ah airplanes! My husband and I were in a plane 'crash' about 8 years ago. Nobody died, thank God. Luckily it happened on the landing descent so we weren't that high in the air when we went down. Before that the plane was making all of these weird noises and was kind of bouncing in the air, it was very rough, and people started to panic. The captain said something that I can't remember, it's all kind of a blur now, and the attendants were running around making sure everyone was buckled and by that time we began the landing descent so I was thinking thank God, we're going to make it, we're going to be ok...then those loud knocking sounds stopped and it was almost silent except for a progressive whistling...we were going down. It was like the plane stopped in mid air and dropped straight down. That's how it felt. Luckily, we were already right above the landing strip by that point so it was just a drop and skid, nothing exploded or caught on fire. A few people were injured from the impact but nothng serious. The most serious one I think was a flight attendent who was up trying to help someone. She was thrown down on impact. That was United Airlines flight 843 from Seattle, Wa. to Salt Lake City, Utah in Feb. 10, 2003.

I still fly though! I hate it but I do it. All of my family is on the east coast and I can't see driving for 5 days with 2 toddlers lol.

Have you guys ever watched the dark water movies? I think that's what they're called. Or is it open water? Where the people somehow are abandoned in the ocean, their dive group forgot them or they jumped off the boat to swim and forgot to lower the ladder first, or on animal planet's 'i shouldnt be alive' where their plane crashes to the ocean or their boat wrecks or something. How awful would that be! Stuck in the ocean wondering if anyone will ever come to your rescue or if anyone even knows you;re out there.

That falls into my fear of being eaten alive....by sharks!!! Ahhh!!!!!

I have an irrational fear of public toilets. Not for germophobe reasons but seriously even as an adult I hate sitting on toilet seats that aren't white and I'm scared of those stainless steel bowl ones

[deleted account]

I didn't realize fearing murderers, rapists, and burglars sneaking into the house was irrational :P I fear that, but I got an alarm to help manage that fear--great investment if you get up a lot at night to make sure you & the kids are still alive; I only get up about once a night now, and if the light is green, I don't even have to get out of bed :)

And I remembered another one I forgot to post earlier--public toilettes. I will NOT use them. I had to address this when my son was potty training, and I can go in them now, but I carry a can of lysol in my purse at all times....just in case.

Edited to add why I don't like them. I don't like them because they don't have lids and when a toilette flushes, fecal matter flies up into the air and settles on everything--Everything is covered in POO!! And poo is a breeding ground for all the unseen filth and germs I mentioned in my earlier post.....so really, a fear of public toilettes is not irrational at all, I'm just surprised more people don't fear them.

bees and wasps really anything that flies about with a stinger. I go crazy waving my hands about and screaming like a little girl. Sometimes I'll throw myself to the ground because you know they can't get you down there! People who know me find it hilarious to see me act like that because I look like a nut job and I'm not afraid of anything else and am a bit of an adrenaline junkie so it surprises them.

I do also get the heeby geebies with spiders and lifts but i'm not afraid of them.

[deleted account]

I have a fear of moths. Not sure why. I scream and hide away really quickly. Makes my partner laugh so hard though. I can't stand them. I had one flying above me and it made me cry. Other than that I am scared of people watching me through windows, the dark, and the sea. The sea, mainly because I am scared that I will get stabbed by a sea urchin (yeah wtf I know.) Lol. And just for lols, I know someone who is afraid of black public toilets. Lol.

The Dentist - I get clammy, nauseous and fantasize about leaping out the window.

Clowns - I fucking hate clowns.

Yellowjackets/Wasps - Honeybees are great but those other stinging bastards can die. If I hear one I run away, the kids can fend for themselves.

Seaweed - It is trying to pull me under the water and hiding monsters. I will not swim near it.

Amanda, as long as I don't look back, I'm OK LOL

YES! Railings!! I don't allow my kids to near those either. My boys like to stand on them (you know, the bottom of the railings, there's that little space where they can put their feet?) and look down. I get panicky when they do that!

i really don't like jack o' lanterns. i don't know why.

Heights! Even when there's a rail, I'm afraid I'm going to fall over. It makes me very afraid when my kids are looking over the rail. Like, terrified.

Tornadoes are a huge one for me, as well. I live in TX, so tornadoes are pretty common here. Couple of years ago, we actually had a tornado that we saw OVER our houses. I had my twin boys with me and I was shaking and terrified. Fortunately, it was a weak one but still!

I have a fear of heights and elevators. I have been known to walk up 15+ flights of stairs to avoid an elevator. While I was preggos with my last child, my doctors office was on the 5th floor, I would walk the stairs every appointment. The nurses there thought I was trying to stay in shape and pat me on my back, but truth be told their elevator scared the crap out of me!

I also have a fear of driving into a body of water and being trapped in my van with the kids.

I used to be afraid of spiders, but not now. They still creep me out, but I got over the "shriek" response now. lol

Child molesters, I have a very real fear (was abused as a child). So I am a little more vigilant with my kids than I would be otherwise I'm sure. They still have lots of freedom, but I am haunted by fears whenever they are gone from the house until I see them again.
I also fear caterpillars. Nasty fuzzy little critters, always ready to jump from a limb to my head or shoulder... ewww... I can't stand them.

Being in a plane that crashes, zombies, clowns, daddy long legs - the way they fly around with their legs dangling down gives me the creeps, the house catching fire in the middle of the night.

Dust in between my toes, spiders crawling in my mouth while I am asleep, burglars, rapists and murderers breaking into my house, being a passenger in the car and not having control to stop a crash, watching my daughters pram fly away from me down a hill and get hit by a car or land in water. I have a few fear issues, I actually have more but I could be here for a while.

I think I might just be considered free range or organic. So, it'd be a lucky zombie that gets to eat me.

[deleted account]

@stephanie
Biowepons, genetically modified animals and food, and any other number of things could create zombies. More like those super zombies who can run really fast and take you out in 2.5.
I`m also scared of the world running out of food then having humans turn on each other and start killing and eating people to survive.

Bears. I am terrified of bears. Whenever we go camping, I'm sure every little noise I hear is a bear coming into our tent to eat me. We really need to get a trailer!
I'm also terrified of mice to the point that I'd move out of my house if we had one in the house! lol
And people breaking into the house. Our house is a little creaky at night and when I'm up feeding Zach and I hear creaks and bangs, I'm sure someone is breaking in. I don't know why I'm so scared of that, I've never had my house broken into.

@ Jackie~ I live in central Alabama. It wasn't so bad but my husband was on his way to Tenn today and had an actual tornado go over his head. It didn't touch down but he said it scared the crap out of him. He said the hail was was about the size of a pecan.

Spiders...

I hate spiders or pretty much any other insect other then a fly, ant, or lady bug. I break out into a sweat and I have to think about the fastest and easiest way to kill it, but it still takes me sometimes an hour (with spiders). If my husband is home, I go straight to him.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one afraid of revolving doors! I literally pause involuntarily before walking through one and have to make myself keep going.

Spiders. No idea why, I have no memory of being bitten by one or anything. But I freak out if there is one near me.

Tornadoes, even though they rarely ever occur where I live. I think it stems from growing up in Illinois and having a few scares as a child.

And t his one might be funny, but my husband driving. He does drive on the fast side, but no faster than I myself drive. Its so strange. I literally am afraid we are going to crash every time he drives somewhere, every time we go around a bend or down a hill- especially if its raining or snowing. My heart races, I grab onto to door handle, I have to close my eyes sometimes. Its some kind of wierd control thing I think, because I really drive the exact same way but obviously, don't have the same fears when I am the one controlling the vehicle.

@ Stephanie - I live on the east coast (US) so I am very familiar with hurricanes and they do not ever have the same effect that tornados have on me. I don't know why. Maybe because they are much more predictable?

Murky water. I live near a river so we fish and swim alot but I can't lean over the boat or get in the water first. I'm terrified something is gonna come out and try to eat me. If I can see to the bottom I'm fine but if not I'm on edge the entire time lol.

Wanda- I have that fear, too, that I'll forget my kids in a store or something and when my daughter was a baby I was afraid that I'd drive off from Walmart or wherever and leave her in her carrier in the shopping cart and would constantly glance back to reassure myself that I didnt leave her! We sure are some crazy broads lol.

Julianne- Do you think zombies are real like in Night of the Living Dead? Brains, brains!!!! : p

[deleted account]

Spiders....I HAT E spiders.

I also have a fear that I'll forget my son somewhere. I don't know why, I've never done it but I'm always checking that he's in the car with us or that he's close by if we go anywhere. On the rare occassion that hubby and I go anywhere without him, I panic when I see the empty car seat and not him. I have to reassure myself that he's with someone (usually grandma). I really need to get over that one before he starts school or I'll be a wreak.

[deleted account]

Rubber bands???? Why rubber bands? Oh semis, I hate driving next to them, too. I also think they'll suddenly turn over and smash me! I'm not really afraid of a wreck, just afraid it will suddenly tip over lol.

Escalators freak me out, too! I'm afraid I'll get a limb sucked into it and ripped off or I'll fall down the escalator head first and die lol.

Jackie- I've been in tornados (well not IN them like Dorothy but there have been real tornados where I lived) and it literally puts me into a paralyzing panic. I've been through alot of hurricanes, which last much longer, they last for days, and I wasn't nearly as scared as the 30 minutes it takes for a tornado to pass and dissolve!

Tornados are mine. I live in an area where they're not common but not unheard of either.

I just know that a tornado is going to be my demise. Everytime we have a thunderstorm on a hot muggy summer day and we get a tornado watch (not even a warning) I go into a full blown panic and it's very hard to bring me back down to earth.

Last summer we had a warning for my area and I though to myself, "This is it. This is it. THIS IS IT. I'm going to die. Even if I die of a heart attack first, I'm going to die!"

Revolving doors and escalators. I am so scared I'm going to get suck in a revolving door!!!! I once got my foot stuck in an escalator and ever since then I hate them.

Spiders ever since I was pregnant with my second.

[deleted account]

I don't like spiders and if I have to kill one I will but I don't touch them. They give me the creeps. I don't care for elevators either but I ride in them. I don't really think I have a fear that I do anything stupid over though. The few fears I have I have truly just forced myself to work through them.

[deleted account]

I have an irrational fear of elevators. I literally tremble with fear and go pale if I have to ride in one. The ones with windows don't bother me so much, but the completely closed in ones drive me crazy. I'm afraid of getting stuck and not being able to communicate with anyone :P Yes, I know they have phones and emergency buttons, but I think they'd fail right along with the elevator.

That's really my only truly irrational fear, unless you count cock roaches, because I associate those with unseen filth and I do fear germs and residue I can't see, like the whole 3rd degree smoke thing, raw meat touching anything, and atmosphere chemicals. I've never seen a cock roach, but I've called Terminex several times because I thought the water bugs I saw in my yard were cock roaches (we live on a lake).
