And yes, I realize that Canada is not part of the US...so when I said "us" in my previous post I was referring to North America, because lets be honest we share a lot of the same ideals.

Love George Carlin...he's a realist and he makes a lot of sense. His comedy routine is honest, that's why a lot of people don't like it...he says what everyone is thinking. The antiquated, ritualistic tendencies of our society have just been discredited and replaced with reality....a hard pill to swallow for some, but a necessary punch to the gut to wake us up so we understand just how absurd some of the things are that we do habitually with no complete understanding of how we came to do them. In Canada we say "sorry" for EVERYTHING...wtf?

haha upside down, backwards, chinese, brail bible with half the pages missing...
anyways, aside from being hilarious,he makes some good points. i do believe that saying "god bless so and so" has become a fairly empty gesture. i'm not christian and i neither take offense or take it as a blessing. it's along the same lines as "merry chirstmas" or if some one where to tell me "alah bless you". it's just a nice (albeit automatic) thing to say, like "break a leg", "have a good day" etc.
but i do think that there are some ppl out there that take it to the extreme and really truly believe that god should bless america and all other nations can go to hell.

I love George Carlin. He is missed. And so right about how politicians use God Bless America as an empty mantra. It is really something that should be saved to comfort followers at a time of great distress. Not meaningless rhetoric.
I'm an agnostic. I find saying, God bless...(anything) to be quite silly. I really just don't think it works like that. However, I must agree with Evelyn. It is not as if saying "God Bless You" is telling everyone else to got to hell in a handcart. When someone says it to me, I appreciate the sentiment, I don't go off on them about how dumb it is. But then again, I'm not George Carlin and I'm not funny.

That makes absolutely no sense...what's wrong with saying God Bless America? Just because you say that doesn't mean you're secretly saying..."God Bless America...*but forget everyone else"...nooooo...you aren't negating the rest of the world just because you are talking about the country you are addressing or speaking of at the moment. So if I say to my friend..God bless you...does that mean because I just addressed that person that I'm telling every other person that they can go **ck themselves? Because that is basically what he's saying. I like George Carlin's comedy..but this was just stupid and pointless.

The video wasn't working for me, but if this is the routine I think it is - I think Carlin is right on. Sure, I'm an atheist, but that aside, "god bless America" doesn't make any sense theologically. It doesn't make sense to expect a god to favor people based on geography. I think of it as standard patriotic blather that politicians feel compelled to say.
