What do you all think about this boys uncle spanking him? he made his nephew post it on his Facebook wall for all his friends to see! If you dont know the story it was because on Facebook the game called farmville they are making gangs and being stupid and his nephew was a part of a gang and his uncle found out and was saying that they ARE NOT a part of any gang and how dare him for doing it!

here's an interview oprah did with michael jacksons parents, where they stated "that's how black people disipline", the video is no longer available, but there is a thing that you can listen on the top of the page to a radio interview about that whole oprah interview. http://www.scpr.org/programs/madeleine-b...

here's another with statistics, black children are 30%more likely to suffer from physical abuse. http://www.myspace.com/forums/t/4810237?...

whether people want to admit it or not, the black community views it as more favorable than the white community. once again, i'm not saying every black person does it, and no white people do. i'm just saying time and time again, you'll hear about how widely acceptable it is amongst the black community. listen to chris rock, or bernie mac talk. they use it in their skits all the time.

I'd like to throw my 2 cents in on the race issue - I personally don't think that more black families use this method of discipline, but perhaps more families who live in certain areas. The black families that I know around here do NOT punish their kids like that. I think you'll find that certain areas of the US are very different in their beliefs and that perhaps there is a larger black population in those areas, which is why many people feel like this is how black parents punish their kids. I'd be willing to bet that in those same areas, the white/asian/indian etc. parents are also more likely to use this type of punishment.

I'm still astounded by how many you are kind of ok with someone hitting someone else with a BELT.

I don't care what my kids did.....nothing......NOTHING......would make me beat them.....ASSAULT them with a belt.....nothing.

I don't think it's anything to do with race either really, I'd bet my bottom dollar that there's just as many other races that would do the same, mores the pity!

jodi, and cassie, it is widely known that the black community finds this type of punishment acceptable. it's widely used within the black community. it does not mean that every black person uses this as a form of punishment, but it IS more often used in the black community.

here's an article written by a black person stating the same thing.http://www.associatedcontent.com/article...

Per Texas law: "Abuse does not include reasonable discipline by a parent/guardian/managing or possessory conservator if child not exposed to substantial risk of harm. Family Code Sec. 261.001.[Ci.] Parent/stepparent/person standing in loco parentis to child is justified to use non-deadly force against a child under 18 when and to degree the actor reasonably believes necessary to discipline, or safeguard or promote child's welfare. Penal Sec. 9.61.[Cr.]"

Race fell into the conversation b/c believe it or not diff races Do punish differently. Alot of black familys "whoop their kids"

And just b/c its farmville ... really i cant belive someone said that. All it takes is something minor to blow up into a major deal. Violence starts somewhere, and for the uncle trying to put a end to it more power too him.

I think what he was trying to prove by posting it on FB ---------is tell your little punk ass friends this is not tolerated in this family, and im going to makes sure your bitch friends know it :) .... thats how i see it.

Im not totally sure of the WHOLE story because it wasnt on the news or anything but i mean the kid MAY have been in a real gang and his uncle was at the end of his rope and didn't know what else to do or it could have been just the Facebook thing no one knows for sure! I just hope i am never in the situation where one of my kids is in a gang or is saying they are i wouldn't know what to do honestly!

" In TX (not sure of other states), a parent can punish a minor (under 18) child with physical punishment until it causes harm meaning needing medical attention."

Really? So you only have to stop once the child needs medical attention????

I was raised with multiracial siblings with white parents, belts were sometimes part of our punishment (as well as hangers, switches, rubber molding, etc) so this type of punishment is not a "race" punishment. I dont see the father being abusive because the belt buckle never touched the kid, belt folded in half, and those swings were not full swing. In TX (not sure of other states), a parent can punish a minor (under 18) child with physical punishment until it causes harm meaning needing medical attention. The ironic thing here is that the uncle is being a great parent because he is aware of what his nephew is doing on the computer, so many parents have no clue.

"Where I live it's illegal to spank before two and after twelve."

So does that mean it would be legal to spank your 3 year old like that? I would think it would still fall outside the realms of a spanking and more a "beating".

I don't tolerate any type of disrespect from my kids either, but you better believe I don't hit them to get them to be respectful!

i don't know what to say. i don't have much experience with the black community, but my neighbor is black and he talks about how his mom wouldn't tolerate shit like that either and he'd get smacked with stuff, and he's glad she did. i hear it all the time that some black parents won't tolerate any type of disrespect or bad actions, and will get hit with stuff.
my neighbor is a good man, he's a little shifty with his illegal coupons and stuff, but he usually buys 30 lbs of bacon with his coupons and gives it to everyone in the neighborhood, a little like robinhood, lol. so i'm ok with it. his brother has been in jail for assault for years. and his sons and daughter are both a mix of good and bad. his oldest boy has 5 kids by 4 dif women and he's not even 25 yet. his daughter is a bit of a loudmouth who chooses to be with men who hit her, and his youngest is a kind, polite, wonderfully smart teenager, who is there tolerating his dad until he can move out i believe. that type of punishment may work from keeping them out of the gangs or whatever, but it definitely causes other problems.

I don't know if I'm more shocked by the video, or by some of your responses. How can it be a good thing that a grown boy just got physically assaulted by his uncle, and was then made to show it to the world? Sad. I hope the police see this video and charge that man with assault!

And yea when guys wear there pants like that it drives me insane!

There has been talk recently comparing Chinese, and now African, parenting styles to American parenting styles. I think it is important to remember that judging one cultural style of parenting from the another's cultural stand point is flawed.

It has been shown in some studies that African American youth thrive when their parents have a high demanding, and low authonomy granting style of parenting, wheras American youth respond more negatively to this parenting style.

" i thought it was funny"

You seriously found it FUNNY? That is assault. Maybe what he did was not right, but whipping a kid with a beld like that, that's friggin' assault. In this country it is illegal in most states. To make things worse, putting it up on FB could also be considered emotional abuse, because it is a deliberate act of humiliation. Discipline should NEVER be about humiliating a child, that's just low, IMO.

I will also add, that uncle needs to pull his fucking pants up. I HATE that look, LOL.

What a horrible nasty creature to do something like that to a person. What a thing to do...especially the public humiliation, seriously, this kid is going to be made fun of and become a social outcast. That could give him psychological issues for life. Teach him not to talk about being violent, by being violent, that doesn't even make any sense!! He needs to learn the difference, not be beat up....that man should be charged with assault and defamation of character.

IDK i guess it just depends if he grew up around it like lived in a neighbor hood that gangs were in and he saw it first hand and still did what he did then it would be wrong BUT if he didn't live where it was the norm and he thought he was just being cool then i could see how he wouldn't think much of it i guess it just depends!

I think that it would be wrong to assume that he knew what he was doing and what the consequences of his actions would be. Even if it seems obvious to us adults, it might not have been obvious to this kid whose brain is still developing, and who might very well suffer from some form of mental illness

Being violent to stop him being (or talking about being) violent just seems like seriously warped logic to me.

If I was that kid, I would calling the police!

If he had done that to an adult, it would be assault.
I think it's disgusting!

@Amy thats basically what the game is you get on there and farm land and grow things and stuff like that i dont play i think its boring as something else but i think he was saying he was in a certain gang and then threatening people over the internet and scarring people and acting stupid! And the uncle found out and was just angry that his nephew would tell people he was affiliated with a gang and i guess freaked out because he had said in a post that he wasn't raised like that and he knew better!

@Nicole i feel that he was a little old to not understand the reality of saying he was affiliated with a certain gang, im sure thats why his uncle was so upset because kids get shot or there family gets shot over the smallest things now a days! I dont think i would have used a belt but i would have made him apologize to everyone also! I just hope he learned his lesson in saying he is in a gang it is very serious!

I think he took the wrong approach. He should not IMO have posted a video of him attacking the kid and demanding he say those things.

He should have sat him down, explained to him how serious the situation was, then demanded the kid post a note appoligizing and explaining himself on facebook.

No video. Just the truth and maybe an explanation of why he was making all of that stuff up to begin with.

Then he could monitor his account after.

I think this is too much BUT I am judging it from my own perspective. If this is what works for this kid, and it protects him from ending up in a gang, prison, etc...then its worth it
