oooo North Bay, yeah my mum has property up North it's lovely up there but pricey. for land anyhow. and @ Amie, yeah, it's more expensive but i like it better. where abouts do you live? i know here in my area of ontario, that's the cheapest i could find. i didn't feel like driving for four hours to get it a bit cheaper :P

Im in northern ontario

4L bag of milk is 4, 69 $
gas usually between 1.08 to 1.13 $
bread white is about 1.89, whole wheat a bit more. Whole grain i only buy on sale cause its like 3.50
ground beef usually about 3,50 -4 $ a lb.
cheese 5.99- 7.99 depending on brand.

i really think its all about shopping smart and stocking up when stuff is on sale, having a deep freezer is amazing and a great investment. Fill up on gas when its cheap, otherwise its 40 $ every 2 weeks ( and we have an explorer which guzzles gas like no other)
min wage is 10.25 $

rent in my city is outrageous because we have a college, a univeristy and a medical school so it is absurd. A room in a shared house is like 500 $ , 1 bedroom appts go from 600 up. Ive seen nice 2 bedrooms for as much 1500$ a month. But you can rent a town house in the bad part of town for like 666$ but you are a good ride from any grocery stores, shopping, medical services etc.

I paid 115,000 for my house 5 years ago 2 bedroom 2 bath , finished basement ( which we refinished and add another bedroom) sits on a nice lot, central but quiet, 4 schools within walking distance. House is easily worth about 180k now, more if i put a few more grand into it. But we also have million dollar homes ( we have 2 lakes central within the city) and most lake fron properties go for about 500k.

to me it is much cheaper to buy small/ average size starter house in my city than rent most appartments. I was paying 750 $ rent ( + utilities) for a 2 bedroom 1 bath before buying my house, now i am paying 600 in mortage and about 150 in taxes monthly for my house.

North Bay's population is under 60k.

Holy crap a doodle woman! You pay that much direct from the farmer?! Where I get our meat from it's closer to $1.10-1.20/lbs. We buy a whole animal at a time (deep freezers are awesome things), butchered and packaged for that price. We even get the bones for our dogs. Oh and the nasty stuff, like tongue and tail (EW). Those pieces go to my SIL to give to her MIL though. Ick.

Oh and the average starter home here runs somewhere between $250,000-$350,000. Depends on the area you buy in the city.

lots of Ontarians here! i've noticed that our food prices are decent but our housing prices & rent & such suck ass. i'm moving to Louisianna or someplace LOL.

well, i'll put my input in.

Milk - we drink soy or almond milk, so that's about 3.49 + tax per litre for soy and around $4 for 1/2 litre of almond milk. i think reg. milk is about $4 or just over but i haven't bought it in so long. i know that's for 3 1 litre bags.

Loaf of multigrain bread - ha, i always buy my bread in bulk and freeze it....but i think it's around $3.50 normally. last week i bought a bunch on sale @ Zehrs for $1 i was so happy i almost peed.

Roasting chicken [uncooked] - well, the farm i buy from, they are $2.90/lb and i usually get a 4 pounder, so with taxes i'd say....13 bucks?

Ground beef [free range pasture fed horomone & antibiotic free] - $3.50/lb

Chicken breasts, boneless skinless [same as above] - $9.00/lb eek eh? i don't buy much of it. i think it's because it's hard for a butcher to do....lot's of work, so it costs more? hm.

Cheese - for a large block, $6.99 ish + tax

Apples - 1lb bag is $3.99 + tax can't wait until summer so i can buy from the farmer's market again ALL produce is way cheaper :( damn winter.

Can of beans - $2.19 + tax

Beer - $ 35 or so for the good stuff, we only ever drink once in a blue moon, and it's Alexander Keith's so it's a bit more high-end but yummmmm :P

Gas - last night we filled up at 111.6 / litre

Rent for a house - gee, i don't know. expensive. there aren't many houses to rent around here.

Rent for my two bedroom apartment - $775 a month all inclusive [hurray for all inclusive]

Minimum wage - 10.25 or 10.50 i think

Average home price is something like 209,000. good luck finding one under that that isn't falling apart or in a crack neighborhood LOL

Rent on a split level 3 bdrm. house (1800ish sq. ft.) = $1000 per month
Rent on a 2 bdrm. apartment = $600 per month
Minimum wage = $10.25 per hour

Now of course the food prices are based off of name brands at full cost. When I shop though I only buy on sale of no name brands so it would be more like:
Bread - $1.50
Potatoes - $1.99
Old Cheddar - $4.44

Average home price - probably around $160,000

Min wage is $15 an hour
Median house price is $500k
Average rent is $500 per week for a house $350 per week for a unit
We pay about $3 a day for power and thats pretty bad considering we have solar panels hooked up to the grid and we are on a buy back scheme.

Okay sorry Lindsay. where we live, we have PSNH that is it. When we lived the Plaistow area it was Unitel and no other option. So they can rake you through the coals if they want to and there is nothing you can do about it.

I live in a tiny coastal town I just rang " energywatch.com.au " or you can go to their website and for free they find your cheapest provider !



There are a few that are partially government owned and they will always be at least 6 % cheaper than private owned like country energy .



And energy watch will compare bills for you .

Yeah I think I lost a year off my life when I opened that bill , I have no idea how it got like that because I am pedantic about turning things off at the switch and conserving as much energy as possible so I nearly vomited when I got that bill , well country energy can go fuck themselves I swapped over to integral who are miles cheaper .

Wow Loureen, you have some NASTY electricity bill!!! My worst was about $750 for a quarter and we live in a 4 bed, 2 bath, rumpus, with a granny flat house.....I thought ours was bad. Ouch!

OMG i think i would have a heart attack at it being that high. Our highest bill was $280 and i thought that was really bad. What helps us is i don't use lights at night generally. when cooking dinner i do but i don't put our lounge room light on unless i am looking for something, no real need to because it isn't getting dark here until about 9pm and then with the moon atm it is like the lights are still on. Lack of sleep is making me cranky at this stupid moon :(. Our winter bill is usually good to because we have a wood fire and we get the wood from my parents place so lucky we don't have to pay for that either.

I'm in Newcastle, Aus... 2hrs north of Sydney on the coast. Population approx. 650,000.

2L of milk - $3.30 for Dairy Farmers, $2.80ish for home brand.
Loaf of multigrain bread - $2.69
1 chicken - around $10 depending on size
2kg bag of brushed potatoes - $2.99
500g block of cheddar - $7-$8
No idea about the brown rice
Cartons (24) of beer go from around $35 for the standard brands, to upwards of $50 for boutique labels.

Petrol - it varies but at the moment is around $1.35-$1.40/L
Average rent on 3b/r house - $300-$350/week
Average rent on 2b/r apartment - probably more than a house due to lots of new development locally. My cousin just moved out of a nice new apartment where he had been paying over $400/week. For an older one it would be around $250/week.
Average house price - $650,000 in the city, $361,000 in the suburbs.

I don't knoww we have tried turning things off at the power point, stacking the freezer and fridge so it doesn't have to run hard (it's not even that big a fridge) adn we don't even use the aircon. But I think everyone here pays about that much.

Electricity per quater for our house is an average of $200, Emma what do you use it all on our house is a family of 5 with 2 dogs 2 cats a deep chest freezer etc etc.

The cheapest place I've seen here with a house was about $200 000. Decent houses are $340 - $600 000. Mansions go for the millions but who the hell would want to buy a house that expensive and live here.

Oh, my house in a crappy neighbourhood, but decent itself (4 bdrm, 2 bath, 2200 sq ft) was $204,000. I think the average around here is not much more than that. We moved here for the cheap housing. Back where we came from (Vancouver), this house would probably be 700-800 thousand. Or more. I don't know how families live there. I guess they live in tiny condos or commute waaaay too far.

Food costs are all the same as yours, which makes sense I guess.

Gas is at 116.9/L right now.
Rent on a 3 bdrm home would probably be about $1400 for a nice one.
2 bed apartment I'm guessing would run you $600 but I've never rented apartments here.
Minimum wage is $8/hour.

I find it interesting that some of your rents are just as bad as ours, but your prices to buy a house are a LOT cheaper.

I don't think you could find a 'dump' to buy for under $500,000 here.... though I admittedly haven't done any recent research.

Rent on our place (3 bedrooms, office, complete with termite damage and foul 70s carpet) is $380 a week. I've seen worse places with less bedrooms get rented out for $500-$800 a week here.



Food is pretty much the same, $12 chicken and about $10 for brand name cheese though $8 for home brand (500g). Milk ranges depending on what you need like lactose free etc. Normal full cream is $1.50 for home brand and probably double for brand name. Beer is like $15 or more for 6 stubbies. Fuel is like $1.30 a litre sometimes. Electricity is $400 per quarter usually although it's been $590 before from 1 small fridge being the only thing that is on all the time. Formula is between $17 and $35 a tin, depending on what kind. Disposable nappies are $41.95 a box for Huggies depends on size how many you get in each box, cheaper brands you use twice as many and it ends up being just as expensive in the long run.



I don't know what minimum wage is, I've worked for $8 an hour with no qualifications and crap hours then got my aged care certificate and got $14.49 at 17 (aged care is not a high paying job by aus standards). most retail jobs etc. people make about the same as aged care and it goes by age or something.
